These stats became useless when Steam started adding huge amounts of non-western people. Not because those users don't matter, but because the numbers don't show what the userbase is doing anymore since it's dominated by fluctuations in users themselves.

>>108506780>Remove what you don’t likeCan I remove the kernel-level spyware? Can I replace the kernel itself? Can I remove the entire Windows shell in favour of something less bloated, WITHOUT system updates breaking it?
>>108506817>Can I remove the kernel-level spyware? Can I replace the kernel itself? Can I remove the entire Windows shell in favour of something less bloated, WITHOUT system updates breaking it?Use an enterprise release and disable telemetry. Basically all of what you asked for is possible. Of course I don't care what you use, if linux is working for you, just stick with that. If you prefer Windows, as I do, there's options you can take to tame it. Even for 99.999% of linux users, the kernel/OS may as well be closed-source by users that cant/wont maintain their own patches. I find this amusing, because on linux you're typically met with tons of updates, every few days, that you never have time to audit, even if you could. In both cases you end up just 'trusting the science' of what the vendor gives you.
>>108506910>Use an enterprise release and disable telemetry. How can I trust it when nobody can audit the source code?
>>108506924It's the same story for binary blobs in the linux kernel, you never can be certain, and at best, have to trust an auditor if they're ever allowed to see it. In both cases, all you can really do is block connections with a firewall.
>>108506817So you must still be on XP then
>>108506944>It's the same storyNo it isn't, because a few firmware blobs are one risk vector, whereas the entire kernel being closed source means nothing can be trusted. Never mind that distros without these blobs exist.
>>108506388Lol and I didn't even participate in the survey, I try to avoid DRM cuck stores atm, 95% of the games are free anyway.
>>108506734
>>108506958>Never mind that distros without these blobs exist.I'm not sure how relevant it is to talk about free distros in the context of running the proprietary steam platform. On the other hand, you cannot hand waive away "a few" blobs if your critique is to audit code, without pure transparency that system must be treated as an unknown quantity.
>>108506780>Remove what you don’t likeLol, lmao even. Yep, makes totally sense on a proprietary system.>>108506910>I trust "disable" telemetry togglesAAPL and MSFT have been cought MULTIPLE times ignoring the user settings and even restoring defaults on updates. I love control, but you cannot simply trust those settings.

I installed Linux Mint from W10 and now I don't know what I was so afraid of. It feels exactly like Windows but with more customization options. Like anyone that isn't tech illiterate should be on Linux at this point with how accessible its gotten.
>>108507062>It feels exactly like WindowsOh well then, technical analysis concluded.
>>108506388It might be another Chinese correctionAlso note how the percentage of SteamOS holo is going down meaning people are actually trying linux on their desktops
>>108506388Is this the first time ever that Linux is 5% on steam?
>>108507002>in the context of running the proprietary steam platformWhat? The Steam runtime isn't part of the Linux kernel. Unless you're making a point about how the typical end user will eventually run some proprietary software anyway, as though one should not cut their losses by running a free kernel.
