anyone else paranoid about the lifespan of their devices? everything breaks eventually but i think we're all worried tech will just continue to get more unaffordable (+ unreliable) over time, so we should all be hoarding the older long-lasting tech while they're cheap to maximize the lifetime of our devices.thinking of building my first am5... but it seems wiser to spend that money on pcs like picrel.what's the longest you've ever had tech last /g/? what was it? are you hoarding?
I have a 3070 ti and still act surprised when I get defaulted to medium graphics :'(
>>108522412This is precisely why I only purchase inexpensive computers, OPee.
>>108522412good thread idea. God blessYeah, I've always been surprised by N64s. They still work and can read and write to their storage. Some of the ones I owned would freeze, but you just had to not BP them. 30 year old computers. Wow.then there is my 2019 computer I use as a server. I don't know how the CPU works, but it does, and it hasn't died from being turned on all this time...I would stick with AM4. It seems so battle tested. If stability is your concern, why something newer?
>>108522473bump, not BP
>>108522412Not really. I have a stack on thinkcentres. I use one as my desktop and just leave it on. I have 7 more if they ever die.I'm much more concerned about zognald and Israel starting ww3
Does anyone know if workstation grate computers/laptops still shit the bed? Very disappointed to see a family members 2018 Macbook pro shit the bed for no reason and the repair shop said it was unfixable like 2 years ago.
>>108522412For SBCs with full Kicad and schematics availability you can just replace any part, so I am unconcerned. I even have a stockpile of ARM processors and memory modules available that I could use. Regarding large desktop PCs the only thing that could break down would be the processor or RAM. Defects on the motherboard or graphics card (aside from the chip itself) I may be able to fix. Same goes for Laptops.External hardware like blu ray drives or 3D printers are fixable
>>108522412I'm this but for batteries. I always get wired shit because I use my things for like decades and batteries will just swell up and kill them.
>>108522412i'm using multiple old HDD from 2011 and 2012 and 2014
>>108522753>batteries will just swellbad maintenance from early phone makers who dont have proper battery management or for non-smartphones, bad battery management system. batteries swell when they are overcharged, good BMS should always be keeping track of that.
>>108522762>ebay>"8tb SAS">price $20-$80Running that deal for years now. Not one has shat the bed.

>>108522412>what's the longest you've ever had tech last /g/?I have a bluray player I bought in 2010 along with an external hdd that I'm still using now (pretty much daily). Most of my hdd (a few dozen tb) are at least 10 years old.
>>108522412>>108522749Regarding the device I had the longest... it's my GameBoy Color that my uncle gifted me for Christmas 1999 <3Together with the Pokemon Red version
>>108522412Well yeah, with prices being what they are now I could probably sell all my tech and buy a brand new Dacia Sandero. I just hope nothing dies before prices normalise.
>>108522412most of my tech just doesn't break (knock on wood)my phone is 10 years oldi have a 12 year old laptop whose drive i replaced twice and wifi card i replaced once, eerything else works great on it, debian runs so well~9 year old other shitty laptop, still running well with linuxi had an ancient netgear router that worked up until the point that it got killed by a power surge (close by lightning strike, which doesn't count)i guess my oldest external drive (~12-14 years old) makes a strange sonar ping sound, but it still worksthat's it
ive had very little actually break, most of it got obsoleted and replaced insteadmost of the poor durability notoriety comes from crappy 90s consumer electronics
>>108522412>>108522465What about cars?
>>108522500Do you have any worries about how modern web would start to require you more and more resource intensive hardware?Any hardware from 10 years ago can't browse modern web, hardware from 5 years ago struggle to do so unless you use specific software.Eventually even your thinkcenter would be outdated even if not broken.
>>108523453youre quite out of touch10 years ago was 20162016 hardware handles the modern web and applications FINEdo not confuse it with 20 year old hardware
>>108522412I literally never had a broken components in my desktop.Laptop on the other hand...
>>108523457>2016 hardware handles the modern web and applications FINENo it doesn't.I have ThinkPad P50, and it struggles with anything "Modern" web that uses JS for everything (FB/IG,etc) and it's even worse since most of the new websites uses AV1 which can't be decoded with the GPU.But everything else runs fine.Heck Even my T60 can open this god forskaen website just fine and handle webms at low resolutions.
>>108523453Nah, it's not remotely that bad.
>>108522412> what's the longest you've ever had tech last /g/? what was it?To name a few: - ~2003: Some HP Pavillion with Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, and NoVideo FX 5200. It was my main desktop PC prior to 2010, collects dust since then - ~2006: - Still regularly listening to music on Yamaha MCR-E810, including its CD player, which delivers considerably better sound quality than a regular PC for playback. I don't have much experience with other audio systems, but nevertheless, this one is more than satisfactory for my ears - Used Sony A100 DSLR for amateur photography up until 2021, then got myself Sony A77 (2011). Considering how hilariously cheap it is nowadays (if the seller is adequate), I can recommend the thing for beginners with limited budget - 2010: - Been dailying ThinkPad x201 up until my recent upgrade to T480; bought (for ~70$) second hand in early 2020s, its drive and battery were replaced by the original owner. A great, compact, easily serviceable, and tough notebook that made me addicted to trackpoints, yet the screen leaves much to be desired - Used Sony Vaio VPCF12M1R as my main desktop machine up until 2021 and as a file server in 2023--2025 before its internal hard drive died off. The laptop itself is pretty solid and reliable, but its TN display sucks ass despite having pretty high DPI, and the keyboard is not very durable - Bought (don't quite remember the price) a PC (Biostar N68S3B board) from the ~same period of time a couple years ago, works as a multi-purpose server nowMost other devices I use nowadays are from 2017--2020. Also, I didn't namesome extra items (monitors, another laptop, a CD recorder, a DVD/Blu-rayplayer, a cassette deck, etc.) from the old days because I'm lazy + the lengthlimit would be exceeded (had to delete 2 items already).> are you hoarding? If it ain't broke or can be reasonably fixed, I keep it.
Doing fine on an Intel 2600k.
