Personally, I am using a laptop. Some ThinkPad models are not as modular. I have an X1 Carbon; it is very good. I enjoy being able to move around. Sometimes the couch is uncomfortable, so I want to sit at my desk. Sometimes the desk is uncomfortable, so I want to sit on the couch. I respect the quality of ThinkPads. Do you prefer laptops (not limited to ThinkPads) or desktops?

Laptop with a thunderbolt dock. You can turn it into a pseudo-desktop using just one cable. (you can also hook up the cables directly to the laptop like a caveman but that's more inconvenient)

most people here have several desktops and countless laptops laying around
there is absolutely zero reason to only have one computer unless you are travelling most of the time

Laptop for anything that doesn't involve rendering animations. I can't believe how many years I spent hauling those heavy Z workstations like a retard.

I have a laptop, desktop and home server.
My monitor has a built-in Thunderbolt dock and switch between my desktop and laptop by just connecting one USB C cable.
The PC is for gaming and more demanding stuff like rendering videos and working on large projects in Affinity.
The laptop is for general work and web browsing. The home server is for everything else i.e. NAS, Jellyfin, Nextcloud, Immich etc.
I'm very content with this arrangement.

laptop, everything else is just bloat. Get a sager and bring it to McDonald's. Fuck desktops.
>>
>>108526930
Either do this just to annoy people at McDonald's or put noctuas in it to use up McDonald's electricity instead of yours. Either way, you can't do that with a desktop.

I'll just bring a covid barrier and wear a respirator. There's a new strain out, ironically. The point is to steal their power, racking up their monthly bill, so victimhood is a good shield.

Desktop.
Never owned a laptop, never will. I have zero use for one.
My desktop is connected to two normal monitors and my tv via HDMI so I can swap between couch/desk without issue.
I also have HTPC specifically for movies, shows etc connected to my projector.
>>
>>108525456
Desktop. I upgrade my pc every 2-3 years so a laptop is not even an option.
>>

False dichotomy, they fill different niches. Laptops exists for mobility (as in to set a workstation in different spots), i move a lot because of work and i need to "set camp" often because of it, so a laptop is a given. Conversely if you have a fixed, permanent space a desktop is more efficient (easier to expand, mod and fix) and comfortable, allowing for poweruser, dedicated stations.

Use case for versus?

that could happen at home too, except you're drunk and spill your vodka

I quit drinking on new years eve so it won't happen to me

>The point is to steal their power
Then bring your desktop with overclocked CPU in.
>>
>>108527398
They won't allow that. You have to have the covid barriers and a sob story, and even the loud ass sager is pushing it, but it's compliant with the rules.

I am thinking of going this way soon. Current PC is getting on, ill just grab a laptop and hook it into my current monitors and peripherals.

Laptop wins it for the majority of people for the portability alone, also building a desk setup with it is also great, especially since it functions as a 2nd monitor if you want, the advantages of a desktop is building it yourself and saving money in the process, and better cooling, also ports without needing a hub, but again for most people a laptop will be just perfect really.

I haven't bought a laptop since I graduated from college 15 years ago. Why would I want to look at a small screen when I could look at a big screen? I have a company-issued laptop for work, which makes sense... but even that is hooked up to monitors and a real keyboard either at home or the office. Pretty much the only thing I use my own laptops for is keeping an eye on /sp/ threads while watching sportsball on the couch.

>Do you prefer laptops (not limited to ThinkPads) or desktops?
I prefer desktops. I only use laptops for when I actually need the mobility, like for business where I have to travel and work from hotels every week.
>>
>>108525456
Big computer for doing stuff. Small computer when I don't want to get out of bed, or when I want to watch a video while cooking.
>>
>>108525456
I grew up on desktops but moved to laptops for some reason, I think because of travel and other things. A few times I've bought new desktop setups only to never use them and retreat back to my laptop. I even bought a screen extender attachment to have dual screens on my laptop which is handy sometimes but even then I barely use that.

>general work
They're is no such thing as "work" on a computer.

>>108525456
Desktop always. Fucking hate laptops with a passion.
