What does COSMIC do different that Cinnamon and KDE? It looks different and that's sort of it? I know they created COSMIC to get away from GNOME but it's legit the same. Hell, I'd even argue that GNOME is more unique because of the overview button. The only thing that sets COSMIC apart from the rest is probably search Google from the desktop feature.
>>108531987As a new user coming from windows 10, I don't see how this is supposed to be better, it's like they took all the worst aspects of modern windows and put it into one package.>no way to opt out of updating OS>constant reminders to update from centrally managed database>infantile tablet tier UI>somehow is a laggy stuttery mess>wants permission to do anything every 5 seconds>doesn't even remember display settings between sessions which makes multi monitor use a massive pain in the ass>bluetooth and wifi built into OS??? I'm on a fucking desktop I can literally see the programmer socks of the people who put this shit together, is not freedom, it's just their version of a nanny operating system that tells you what pronouns to use. I tried to use mint, but that fucking thing won't even install for me, says my m.2 SSD must be too old. And then on top of this I'm still expected to keep a copy of windows around because 90% of useful software doesn't work on linux, what's the point of this operating system?
>>108531987>Why does COSMIC existBecause people wanted to create this. And as you said, the dependency on GNOME. But this is funny, because System76 relies on Ubuntu at the same time. I honestly think that COSMIC was/is a huge time/money sink. I don't hate it, but I feel like GNOME and KDE are already 2 great choices that are different enough to justify their existence.
>>108532381Like this, how does this even happen?? I've never had a windows install literally saying that it failed because it couldn't copy files. That piece of shit pop os installed just fine, why does this not work?
>>108531987I unironically think Singularity is going to be better and become stable faster than COSMIC so I've been keeping more of an eye on that. COSMIC also hasn't had an update in over a month at this point and I eventually just got tired of its jank.
>>108531987It's main selling point is being a DE with first class tiling window manager features. I quite like it, but I've been using Niri and Sway more recently.
>>108531987> search Google from the desktop featureWow, features from windows. Does it also reply with irrelevant stuff and does not search local file system?
>>108532666It's literally all of the gay tranny shit I don't want in windows put into one place.
>>108531987You can shit on Cosmic for being unrefined or being too GNOMEy, but it's the only modern DE that doesn't have any hard dependencies on BasedstemD. For that reason alone, I hope it does well. Also, Cosmic isn't unique in being able to do online searches from the desktop. Cinnamon can do that as well.
>>108532737only GNOME has hard dependencies on systemd.
