touch typing graphs designate fingers to zones of keys, and that makes ergonomic sense. it is set so that the fingers travel the shortest distance to reach a key. my zones are different and trying to type the way the graphs show doesn't feel right to me. my ring fingers feel better at doing what my pinky fingers are designated for. years of muscle memory has set me in my zones.

with my zones, i'm an above avg typist, float casually around 100 wpm and peaking at around 140 wpm.
i don't care at all about improving speed, but i am interested in hand health. i stretch my hands/fingers daily, use keyboard shortcuts as much as i can. i've never felt much, if any, hand strain/pain from typing this way, so i probably will not change my zones without more research/input from others or if my hands start crapping out. i'm sure most touch typists have some sort of hybrid variation.

what are your zones?
>>
Very similar to yours but I dont think it matters at all, my use case is coding and I dont think i ever need to get to 120WPM, like not even 60 is specifically useful. There are very few scenarios apart from transcription where i find fast typing useful. That and showing off.

all i can say for certain is everything up to Y/H/N is taken up by my left hand while only my thumb, index, and middle finger see use on my right hand. have taken conscious measures to retrain my muscle memory there since i do feel my left being overextended from it taking the brunt of the work
>>

>like not even 60 is specifically useful
I heavily disagree. Faster simply typing lets you iterate your ideas faster. 70 wpm is the bare minimum for me, anything below feels awful. Though I'm not surprised if many disagree with me in the current AI era.
>>
I type comfortably 80-100 depending on how heavy the punctuation is. Which is already faster than I can formulate how I want to articulate an idea, so that's good enough.
As far as zone idk. I don't use my pinkies at all except for enter, but I have long fingers.

>touch typing
Just forget it bro. It's obsoleted by voice input and agentic AI.
>>
>>108538351
I don't really use my pinky when typing because my hands are big, I still get about 100wpm

i don't even know what that means lol but i looked it up and now i'm seeing shit about row stagger, thumb clusters wtf. i thought i was autistic but you might be a wizard

I once almost learned Colemak, but after having already learned to touch typed Qwerty, I don't see a need to relearn. Maybe if I mattered a little more . . .

This sperg reliably hitting >100wpm while only typing with his index fingers is proof that all the home row, key zones, layouts and all the other bullshit means fuck all in terms of typing speed. You either have the right muscle memory or you don't.

the normal one but with my right index on h instead of j, optimising for text and not those stupid characters i barely use
>>
>>108539996
nah, i know because i used to type like that
when i started forcing myself to use all fingers my speed climbed rapidly
eventually you will start to hyperoptimise automatically, its quite interesting
looks a bit like dancing but with fingers

I don't think about zones or anything when typing.
What I've noticed is that the layout in my language is better than QWERTY though.
The most common letters are on the home row and vowels and consonants are assigned to each hand.
Looking at the Russian layout gives me a migraine.

i have to use the student layout for cyrillic
>>

What language is this for?

russian
>>
>>108543429
It's still strange that vowels are not split so your hands take turns when typing.
It looks foreign to me so I don't know if it would be better than the conventional layout, that something you would know.
Over here for some reason a lot of people use a "phonetic" layout mapped to QWERTY, which in my opinion is an abomination, but all the young people are used to it.
>>
>>108539844
Based.
>>
>>108543459
yes, the phonetic one is the same as the student one
its only because russian is my 8th language, i really cant be arsed to learn a new layout

>>108543514
I prefer Windows' mnemonic layout where you're basically writing transliterations, so some characters involve a specific Latin key combo. So Ш is "SH", Я is "JA" and so on. So "Eбaть яшepoк" is "Ebat' jasherok".

These have ALL terrible ergonomics, and are based on the person bringing their wrists together in a uncomfortable position, and stretching your fingers outwards. I have gigantic wide chad shoulders, so i mostly use the middle finger for every letter key. ;)
>>
>>108539844
Tell me, Ctrl+C you deviate from that and go l.index on l.ctrl + r.index on C, right?
>>
Do people really not use ring for Z, middle for X?
I don't know how you find it comfortable for you hands to be parallel rather slanting towards each other.
Although I did relearn to type in Dvorak a few years ago which is a better layout for textbook touch typing.

>>108538351
If you're interested in hand health going an alternate layout and using a split ergo is worth it.
I am 10wpm slower on my split (I'm not sure why) but it's more enjoyable to type because I've set it up to have very light switches (choc V1 pinks).

>>108540536
B is on the wrong side for me on a lot of splits.

In my case it's the most natural way to type Cyrillic. I'm accustomed to writing out transliterations and Russian is from a neighboring Slavic language group, which helps a lot in filling in the gaps.
>>
>>108546735
so am i, having to combine characters is just extremely annoying
>>
>>108546870
Guess it's a matter of preference, in my case it translates pretty well. I think of the transliteration, the whole muscle memory link does the job, I type Cyrillic. Maybe one day I'll learn ЙЦУКEH if I get far enough in my proficiency.
