I use void on my laptop it's pretty good. I tired it on my gaming pc but I run Nvidia and found it difficult. I just used the premade xfce version in the website.

But in my laptop it's fine I use it as a samba server and for torrents and general web browsing and Emacs use.

Yes it does, including for network mounted directories.
There's a setting to skip very large files i.e. 32, 64GB but it generates thumbnails by default, that's upstream from Gnome.

KDE will never let the designers, that are quite good, take the wheel because the users it has would start a hate campaign bigger than what we've ever seen. All the people butthurt over gnome since version 3 have gathered there and they know they can't fork the entirety of KDE like Mate and Cinnamon did 2 decades ago.
The have a new theme in the works, called ocean, and it looks exactly like google material 2. It will piss everyone off and they'll revert it because Nate is ultra scared of making decisions.

Then the big project devs in KDE also hate the designers. Dolphin uses QtWidgets instead of Kirigami, Krita until recently used Qt5 instead of 6.

Fedora is the "flagship" Linux distro, most in line with upstream.
The problem is that it still has some of the problems (e.g. drivers, lack of proprietary softwares without rpm fusion) that made Ubuntu win over it in the first place.
Furthermore, the "flagship" default is GNOME, which is very bad for new users coming from Windows.
Linux Mint is unenshittified Ubuntu, with a Windows-friendly DE, so it literally is the best distro for newbies.

The sad part is on linux there's not even a singular good desktop or distro that can even compare to windows 10s level of functionality.
Windows 10 just gets so many things right
It has a simple dark and light theme, with sane color accents
It has a great file manager that just werks with automatic zipping and archiving built out of the box
It has great GPU handling and has very smooth gaming while streaming, which linux doesnt have

Mint devs are laughably incompetent they dont even use their own OS, same with zorinOS. Every single dekstop designer on linux and distro maintainer is incompetent.
On mint specifically
The image viewer is garbage it functions slowly on large images that are even 8mb+ in size zoom in and pan around it starts lagging. Had to install nomacs to fix it.
The file manager is garbage its slow as shit and doesnt instantly load folders like windows, had to change it to thunar for it to even be usable for daily thumbnails and file transfer.

I don't want a flashy bullshit UI that hogs system resources and is harder to maintain, I want functionality and Mint has enough of that. Mint is an extremely stable distro that focuses on being simple to understand and it does it very well, it holds you hand after install and stops you accidentally fucking up the python install and other things you could do if you don't understand Linux but want to go a bit deeper.

For me on Debian I get under a gig of ram usage at launch with GNOME, it's very comparable and sometimes even lighter than KDE unless you go disabling a ton of KDE's background services, so comparable I don't even see a point in comparing KDE or GNOME when it comes to memory usage. Mint is also old - like 20 + years or some shit - it just works for so long it just worked before you were born. if all you need is an OS that lets you browse stuff and play games - this is it. Its old, stable, just works.... its what linux is starting to be hostile against.

I'm an experienced Linux user and Mint is still my favorite distro. I have used other distros, I have even installed Arch back when it was challenging, but I wind up coming back to Mint because it is perfect ootb. The only distro besides Ubuntu I would use.

All the criticisms I hear about Mint are bullshit. Back then it was "their website got hacked". Now, it's "it's on x11" but who gives a fuck if it works? My desktop has two nvidia gpus and two monitors, it works. I'm not a big gamer but I can play Valheim which is the best game of the last 10 years.
I don't like Debian, I don't like having to install a bunch of shit. Mint comes with utilities other distros don't like a USB image writer that comes in handy. The update manager is great. Software center is a joke but it's just ubuntu so every real program is easy to get.

I moved from Debian to Void on Desktop and Laptop. For *free* packages, package management is good. For *non-free* packages, package management is dogshit - it's fine, I was able to work out what I needed in these cases. I think the worst offence so far was that I wanted to play TES3MP with some friends, but I was missing a 32-bit library, and apparently this library was not available at all on void. So I had to download a debian package, extract it with xdeb and then place it in the local lib folder for the program. It works great but fuck that actually was annoying.

Don't let that put you off though, I am genuinely having a great time using Void and have found it absolutely rock solid. 10/10 would recommend (to someone who can problem solve)
