A recent estimate for 760$ just for the bill of materials and that's not all the costs. There is also the cost of assembly and shipping so see the cost of making an additional PS6 unit ending up below 800$. Sony might be willing to take a small loss on each unit sold but there will also be taxes/tariffs most likely that will be more than that so probably 899$ without disc-drive (around the current price as the PS5 pro) and just 1TB of storage.

But of course that is with the current very high ram and storage prices. It's obvious when looking at the specs that PS6 was designed to be cheap to make probably targeting a retail price of around 600$.

Perhaps 3 years after launch they will be able to get the PS6 price down to what it was intended but i don't see them delaying the launch by several years since microsoft is going to launch their next 'console' (project helix) regardless (even if they have to charge 1200$+ for it to make a profit).

Note that microsoft cannot sell their next xbox at a loss if it's actually going to come with a windows mode letting you install steam and not have to pay to play online. PS6 will however be a closed ecosystem so they will be able to lose money on each console sold and still profit overall from it.

But i don't think sony wants to lose much if any money on each PS6 sold to be honest. They can simply charge 899$ to 1000$ initially and have most people remain on PS5 for years until they cut the price. Honestly if i was owning sony i would charge 999$ for PS6 knowing loads of people would buy it anyway (while waiting for GDDR7 prices to come down).

Recent leaks indicate the PS6's bill of materials (BOM) is around $760, aligning closely with your estimate and excluding assembly, shipping, taxes, or tariffs, which could push total costs higher.
Production Costs

High-end components like 3nm processors and dense RAM drive this up from the PS5's ~$450 BOM, with no quick price drops expected due to scaling challenges. Sony has historically subsidized hardware, selling at a loss to profit from software and services in their closed ecosystem.
Likely Pricing

A $699 retail price remains feasible with subsidies, though some analysts predict $800+ or even $899 to match the current PS5 Pro, especially post-price hikes. Your $899–$1000 range fits if Sony prioritizes margins over aggressive launches, letting PS5 linger longer.
Competition Factors

Microsoft's Project Helix (next Xbox) might launch pricier at $1000+ due to open Windows/Steam support, limiting their loss-leader strategy and giving Sony ecosystem leverage. Sony could target $600 eventually as costs fall, but not at launch amid high component prices. Delaying for cheaper parts risks ceding ground, so a premium initial price with later cuts seems probable.

>PS3 launch

>PS4 launch
$1,100 day one.
>PS4 Pro launch
$400 day one.
PS5 launch
$1,000 day one.
PS5 Pro
$700 day one.

Price has never really been a factor when it comes to buying new hardware. It today's money, the PS3 was almost $12,000!

What would be the point of a PS6? What could it do that the PS5 cannot? And with how long it takes to make games these days there would be no point buying a PS6 at release either.
