Cosmic is slowly getting better these days, so Cosmic thread. Discuss Cosmic, mock Gnome, keep Ebussy mad.>What is Cosmic? A Desktop Environment for linux built on libcosmic, a fork of Iced.rs.>Why Cosmic?Feature rich alternative to Gnome where devs take your issues seriously instead of swapping them aside with an holier than you attitude.>What's the current status?https://github.com/orgs/pop-os/projects/27/views/1>Issues?https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-epoch/issues>What's the catch?Wouldn't really call it production ready, but it's good enough as personal daily runner for the curious.
No love whatsoever? :(
Isn't this what broke PopOS for LTT when he tried it recently for his Linux challenge?
>>108544619No, when LTT used it Cosmic was still just a heavy Gnome modification. The whole gist of Cosmic is basically System76 devs got mad about Gnome's lackluster extension support, i.e. breaking shit without notice. So made their own whole DE.
>>108544662im sure the guys that can barely manage an ubuntu fork will make a great de

At the end of the day, it's a Gnome replacement, ergo looks mostly.. like gnome.
>>108544747their business is from hardware sales to linux evangalists, not their outdated distro that shits it's pants. >>108544747Thanks. I actually hated GNOME since 3. GNOME 2 was cool, looked like modern XFCE. GNOME 3 tried following Windows 8, and while Microsoft apologized, GNOME doubled down on it, which ended up being a horrible move for the whole Linux ecosystem imho.
i dont know what cosmic is but she's hotno i didnt really understand the answer to whats cosmic or why cosmic so i still dont know
she should be flat
>>108544662He tried it again a few weeks ago using the actual Cosmic DE. It broke everything again
>>108545340It wasn't COSMIC's fault. They were Proton/driver/XWayland issues.
>>108544825>3 tried following Windows 8, aGNOME 3 came one year before Windows 8
>>108545532Yeah, but it wasn't a surprise announcement. They were advertising how the future was going to be a single interface for destops, tablets, laptops, phones, etc. That was going to be "the future" back then.
>>108544278>where devs take your issues seriously instead of swapping them aside with an holier than you attitude.asked this faggot for an official cosmic calculator because the community one CANT CALCULATE and he told me to use the Google search calculator

I tried it to form my own opinions and hated it but it's nothing how you retards keep describing it.>MacOSWorkflow based entirely around the dock. Tray icons in dock, notifications in dock, media player in dock. elementaryOS is the only one doing this on Linux>Windows 8It had tiles that launched full screen apps, desktop was shown as a separate tile.Gnome doesn't have that, the closest thing to it is the stupid app drawer that shows up when you double press the windows key and nobody uses it, everyone just searches like you do with krunner or rofi. I guess the drawer is cool if you don't have a keyboard>CosmicIt's literally closer to xfce than gnome. Gnome is based around workspaces instead of a dock so you close shit or move them away instead of minimizing, like a tiling wm without waybar. Cosmic has a dock that can also be a taskbar that has applets. It has tilling but it's not based around workspacesI use niri and it's the best shit I've used on Linux in a while, it mogs gnome, cosmic, kde, hyprkand, xfce and cinnamon. Try that too anons
>>108545838>Have you anons actually tried gnomeI was there, Gandalf, happily using GNOME2. There were no DE flamewars, everyone just used GNOME because it just werk'd. KDE had his fanboys but was too heavy, so most people would stick to the default, which was GNOME2. Of course there were the niche autists as well, but minority. Then came Tablets and the future was that the next billion computer users would be "tablet native" and "what's a computer" kind of people. Everybody wanted to dumb it down to appeal to normalfags. They saw as the next step from DOS CLI to Windows desktop metaphor to Tablet UI. A huge leap. Microsoft spent a huge amount of money on it. They had Windows Phone with Metro first, but were still ironing out Windows 8.GNOME3 came out. It doesn't really matter that the specific details weren't like Windows 8, the focus was that this was a Tablet-centric GUI throwing away the old fashioned desktop metaphor. Everything was BIG for your fat sausage fingers. Alt+Tab showed big images. Start menu had big-ass icons. It was horrible.Suddenly, everybody was scurrying away to save their distro from this clusterfuck. Suddenly *buntus stopped being the redheaded stepchild. Mint gys, iirc, forked GNOME2 to keep it going AND GNOME3 to keep it on the desktop metaphor with internal components. Ubuntu flew off GNOME3 into their own Unity, which tried to fence-sit between between the future and traditional desktop, a "tame" GNOME3 kind of thing. Several distros sprung up with nothing new but a different home-grown DE that whose main offering was "not being GNOME3". Linux fragmentation exploded and the year of Linux desktop got pushed by decades, or so it felt, at least, dunno if it's ever coming.Microsoft pulled back to Windows won't be tablet-first UI, we'll go back to desktop metaphor, we were wrong. Not GNOME. These guys were all "my way or the highway", which is where the whole GNOME maintainer stereotype comes from, really, and why the shit hit the fan.
>>108544278>CosmicTried it january, or whenever else anons were losing their mind about it. They got the "snappy" feeling and giving you a dock and let you do whatever workflow right. Morale is high and it's still in the "everything is possible" phase. Slint and it's customers became a first class citizen by simply contributing. Not even close to xfce/cinnamon but they haven't been removing shit either.>break every possible extension on purposeAlso not true, the extension system sucks but it's not "on purpose" either. They patch the shell code directly, even if a variable an extension overrides gets renamed, the extension will break so they version lock the extensions to versions and most extensions only have to advertise that they support the latest version without changing anything.Extensions suck compared to applets and other systems other desktops have but also they would be less powerful compared to this system as they can completely modify anything.I don't mind gnome, it's not for me at all, but you guys act as if it's something unique to gnome or that gnome murdered your families. Plasma plugins break on every release, cinnamon themes had to be updated to account for the new apps, xfce is about to drop 99% of its ecosystem to move to Wayland because they change the compositor to that of cosmic. I don't care about any of these and if niri annoys me I'll switch to something else desu

>>108544278COSMIC took so long to get a working desktop in user's hands that in that time we got several Quickshell configs like Noctalia that basically replace DEs for people running Compositor-only and other desktops in general have just gotten better (Singularity is also coming and looks like it'll properly go stable before COSMIC while also having more functionality). There's really no reason to use it unless you really want a full Rust desktop for (((some))) reason.

does Cosmic have a good program to set up gamepads? I use Sway atm but I was thinking about switching to KDE because there are too many things I miss from winshit, the niggly shit.apparently either GNOME or KDE has a good gamepad mapping utility. gonna do some trialling of all of these DEs.
>>108559357>apparently either GNOME or KDE has a good gamepad mapping utilityneither of them do? you might be thinking of some distro's pre-packaged tool, afaik people just do it via Steam nowadays.

>>108555674>>108560964I do think it was even simpler; just economics. Instead of investing into two separate systems, they can now focus on one. Their main focus group playing into is surely welcomed, but at the end of the day it's just money.
