Linux kernel devs have dealt a huge blow to embedded systems as they announce they will no longer be supporting the Intel 486. A CPU last made in 2007

So? Use an older Linux Kernel, then. Even Linux 2.4 would be more than capable of powering literally any embedded application you could possibly think of.

Damn! I'm going to have to trash my Intel RapidCAD CPUs.
>>
>>108547722
I can still play DOOM on it. Big deal.

>486
>last made in 2007
really?
>>
>>108547722
>>108548749
why the fuck were they still making the 486 in 2007?
>>
>>108547722
Just don't upgrade, keep the last working install on your embedded system, and put it behind a firewall if you need it to have internet
>>
>>108548827
they're still making new Z80s, mate
microcontrollers, industrial computers, etc

shit stays around for a long time in the real industry
>>
>>108548827
Yeah, I thought 486 was obsoleted in the late 1990s
>>
pretty sure there are still 486 type cpus being made for industrial purposes
>>
>>108548841

they withdraw news telling zilog z80 production stops?
>>
>>108548841
>shit stays around for a long time in the real industry
no, industry rarely stays on shit hardware, nobody actually has a system that depends on a 486 or z80s

the real reason the 486 was still made is because its die also has a military variant with different instructions enabled and RTOS/GPIO support, same reason why those ddr3 intel mobos are being made again. the f35 literally uses 14nm die, ddr3 speed intel SOCs for many of its subsystems

and the z80 only exists for boutique memes because its dogshit as a microcontroller

I believe 386 and 486 are the CPUs in printers.
Yes, printers have a full computer inside them.
>>
>>108549921
not me i buy cheap printers that are like esp32 enhanced for the modern world while still being dinotech
>>

>industry rarely stays on shit hardware
Bro, industry is where hardware gets flogged for decades even after the manufacturer of the system is long gone.
Look up any main board for some 30 year old equipment and there are tens of companies offering repair services or a fixed board for hundreds.
>>
>>108548839
>>108547731
Why should 486 have to be left out of features?
>>
>>108547722
>2007
you mean 1987
