My friend wants to try Linux. I recommended her Debian. Was this a good choice or not? I still have an option to recommend her something else since she hasn't gotten around to installing Debian yet.

He cute

not a good choice because debian is always outdated and it will feel like a massive downgrade

CachyOS

Meh, in 2026 you should not be installing anything directly on base system anyway. Having a stable base and throwing containerised software on top is based.
>GUI applications
flatpak/snap
>cli tools
snap, nix, brew even

+1

really easy to set up, sane defaults, performant, up to date. You don't have to change anything because it runs perfectly fine out of the box, but it's still Arch under the hood so if you decide to go deeper into Linux, it lets you.

Only use Debian if you're over 60 years old and don't care about your packages lacking 2 years behind. Completely unusable OS for anything beyond writing emails and looking at funny minion memes on facebook
>>
>>108552277
kinda a pornstar? seems like there is some confusion, better give me her name so i can seek more clarity on the subject.
>>
The only reasonable suggestions are Mint - Cachy - Zorin.
>>
>>108551217
Christ no. openSUSE or Fedora. Ubuntu if your friend is both gay AND a faggot.

no, it is shit as a newbie's distro because there isnt as much babysit as in fedora and theyll try to replicate what they got on windows, its hard time ahead.
recommend fedora, also stop shitting the catalog - use /fglt faggot.

This.
If you're gonna use anything Debian-based for a beginner, then Mint is the only sane choice there is.

even after using linux for years i still love mint out of any other distro
>>
>>108553744
Yep I tried Debian, Fedora, and Arch + just about every fucking desktop environment that exists, I quite liked Arch with KDE in particular and may go back to it some day, but for some reason I just felt like putting both my machines back to Mint and am very happy with that. Mint is the best for beginners not because it is specific to beginners, but because it is objectively the best for 90% of users.

OP Mint is the right answer here in case you couldn't gather that from my post.

>>
>>108551217
Yeah, it's the least problematic "real" distro to get started with compared to Fedora, Suse, Arch. A meme beginner distro like Mint would be easier still but then they'll end up distrohopping.

calling cachy "flavor of the month trash" when it's been the go-to recommended gaming distro for close to a decade is wild

debian is nice but i install linux mint on all the computers that are to be used as daily drivers. my boomer parents can use it so i have no doubt that anyone else can.

i cannot imagine a more painful introduction to linux then that. you should be recommending one of the easy to use arch derivatives. they can learn how to fuck around with "stable" bullshit later, to start off with everything should be easy.
