I get the system has its fans, but don't you think the obsession is a bit much? Corporations have turned it into a useful server OS, but trying to shoehorn it for desktop use is a bit of farce, but sadly people get really offended when you point that out. It's just not that impressive, I'm sorry.

Ok is there a better alternative (there isn't)
>>
>>108552687
Windows and MacOS of course, but you lack the self confidence to admit it in the face of the zealots and other Stockholm-syndrome inflicted victims.

Do you own a phone? Ever make an online purchase? Have an email account? There's far more useful information to sell to data brokers from those sources than the way you interact with the start menu. Also from what I've seen, GNOME and KDE would like to encourage more telemetry so they know which features people use, and how well they're working.
>>
>>108552675
more like corporations noticed a free useful server os and began using it.
>>
Works on my machine.
>>
>>108552847
Absolutely, but we can't say they haven't contributed a ton of resources back into it. Even as it became a popular choice for webservers, it had an inferior network stack to BSD. This was a common sense and pragmatic application, wholly unrelated to FOSStard ideology.
>>
I use linux mostly but I just booted into windows 11 to play a game. You can use different operating systems.

this angle isnt going to work. the normalfags have already taken over. i jumped ship to windows (11 pro btw)

Probably, and not even for the tech itself, but the petty squabbles and time wasted arguing for one distro or another.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

No but thanks for reminding me I have a banging date with your mom later tonight.
>>
>>108552675
It's a very wrong opinion. Linux is easier to use than windows or Mac as well as having more control and more options if you do want to customize, there is no legitimate usecase for for windows at all anymore and Mac is only good for people who have too much money and are absolutely completely tech-illiterate and need everything done for them.

The reason Linux fellers go on so much is because most of us avoided using it because it would be hard and inconvenient and we would have to learn a lot to be able to use it, then we started using it we realized that wasn't the case at all, and we spent years on windows because of people saying all this dumb and wrong shit that hasn't been true for at least 10 years. So when we see this dumb and wrong shit we feel the need to correct it, so others aren't misled as we were.
>>

>Linux is easier to use than windows
Oh you want to play videos? Weird ask, but you need codecs... Just le heckin' copy+paste le science below into your terminal.

sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm

sudo dnf config-manager --enable fedora-cisco-openh264

sudo dnf config-manager setopt fedora-cisco-openh264.enabled=1

sudo dnf install vlc

sudo dnf install python-vlc

It's so intuitive, imagine actually using a Mac.
>>
>>108554174
>Mac is only good for people who have too much money
You're supposed to pay for linux too, etiher with your time or a donation. Otherwise you're a freeloader and a very bad communist.

>we we we we we
There's that collective voice again. Daily reminder: You are nothing, you contribute absolutely noting and can only take take take from the community.
>>
you have a point. many users would not notice if you swapped their linux to bsd, as long as you keep the software stack same.
>>
>>108554243
I would definitely notice the loss of drivers that makes my hardware stop working, quit being retarded.

Look at this seething shill. You get all media codecs installed out of the box on any of the 'just werks' distros. Even something like Arch, unless you choose not to you will have everything you need either in the kernel, Arch itself, or your desktop environment. I couldn't even believe how easy installing Arch was. I thought OK, I tried the easy distros, now I'll get the REAL Linux experience I kept hearing about.

But no, it was a little more fucking around to install then everything worked fine and I never had to do anything.

>>108554219
>You're supposed to pay for linux too, etiher with your time or a donation.
No you're not, you may choose to if you like. I have contributed with software, but it doesn't actually matter if you do or you don't. Doesn't make anyone a 'freeloader', we want people to use our software.
>>

the modular meme has forever poisoned linux IMO
for me, it’s windows or freebsd
>>
>>108554352
Er, yeah. I thought this was common knowledge? There was a big effort in the early 2000s to bring linux up to speed with UNIX systems which were far more mature. Linux was chosen as the server OS because of the extremely permissive license.

it's much better than it used to be 15 years ago.
I think many of the hardcore zealots lost their spark after all that corporate money started flowing into various high profile open source projects.
If only GIMP could get their heads out of their asses.
>>
>>108552701
I'm no Linux fanboy but Windows is objectively shit. I'm a tech brainlet and even I got fed up with that shit. It's filled with bloat and spyware and trying to debloat it leaves you with a half broken system. You can't even set it up without creating an online account by default Goddamnit. Linux breathed new life into my PC and even fixed all the HDR issues I had despite it's not even a mature feature. On winblows random applications had less brightness or some other stupid shit.
And MacOS is locked to apples stupid hardware so its not even a serious discussion there

You're doing the same thing you're complaining about. Who cares if I am running a thing on Mac or Linux? You can get most things on most systems. You can code on almost anything. It doesn't matter. This thread is obviously not about your subject dishonest homogay

Intresting bait. Linux has had multiple good desktip environments and userland applications for years.

kek not that anon but I use windows every god damn day for work and it is awful in every god damn way imaginable. I hate it and I'm applying for new jobs based on that alone. they baited me by putting me on a OSX team then switching me to a windows team for a new project.

But have fun if you enjoy those.

>>108552675
I dunno man I stayed away from Linux as a desktop for like 20 years because Windows was good enough for me but after it got progressively shittier I installed Fedora KDE just to check Linux out, fully expecting to return to my Win10 installation after getting filtered by something but it's actually really easy to learn and just works and doesn't give me the few daily issues I have on Windows like monitors forgetting which screen I had shit on when I turn them off or requiring frequent repairing of some bluetooth devices. After 2 weeks I mosly forgot I was on a whole new OS.
Feels like anyone who says desktop Linux sucks either tried some weird do it yourself tinker distro they didn't have the skill to maintain or hasn't tried Linux in years.
