Nearly 20 years and still the undisputed kin/g/ of the Linux desktop. How does Canonical do it?>erm, but my distro is better Maybe you're right, but no one cares.
larrppppppppp
>>108554085>but no one caresThat's exactly my thoughts towards UbuntuDo Linux from scratch like a real man or fuck off
>>108554085Threw it all away to ship a LTS version with unfinished RIIR coreutils and sudo at version 0.7.
>>108554160Sometimes the band aid has to be ripped off before you can progress. Either you can stay on the last LTS or you can ride this wave. From my perspective I know shit is gonna break and I'm gonna have to fix it but I'm ready.
Ubuntu did more than anyone to make Linux a viable desktop OS. "muh debian" you clearly weren't there. "muh Red Hat" no, it was Ubuntu. Ubuntu was/is synonymous with desktop linux.
>>108554203sure, but its not a great distro now imo. pretty sure you need like 6gb of ram just to run it.
>>108554085the default desktop is sexy
>>108554220If you cannot scape together enough funds for 6gb of ram, you have no business being on a desktop. If it's some old machine, well then just use an older release.
>>108554220>sure, but its not a great distro now imo.People have been saying this as copium forever. >pretty sure you need like 6gb of ram just to run it.You really want to use GNOME on 4gb? It'll work. You won't like it but it'll work.
>>108554232idk thats retarded. windows 11’s minimum is like 4gbs an should use as few resources as it can. not sayin windows is better btw
>>108554282But how is Windows 11 actually going to run with that? Especially once you open up your web browser and start opening up tabs. I'm doing just fine with Ubuntu and 16GB of RAM. It's not ideal but it's better than Windows.
>>108554282Well Windows is obviously a better OS (there will be no debate here), but 4gb is disingenuous, Windows won't run well on that.
>>108554250i still think ubuntu is just mid. debian and mint are better.
>>108554282I don't know if you've ever tried to use Windows 10/11 with the alleged "minimum system requirements" but it is actually hell on Earth. Windows 11's minimum RAM requirement should realistically be 8GB and that's even still pushing it.
>>108554310All of desktop linux is mid, and you should be tired of pretending it's not.
>>108554250ok look if you don't know shit about GNOME 2 and the clusterfuck that Unity was please refrain from shilling Canonical, because literally everything has gone downhill since upstart was deprecated.
>>108554319But nothing else is actually better.
>>108554319that's what you get for not using fedora GNOME
>>108554303fair enough, but still if im using linux, i dont want it to take all my pcs resources. if thats the case, i'll move back to windows 10.
>>108554085I've been using Ubuntu for the last 8 years and I like it, but I'm concerned about the future. I don't like the rust replacement going on, not because I don't like rust but because they're using as a way of replacing GPL.I also don't like the push for age verification, and if they force it I'll move to arch or similar. Probably give hyprland a go
>>108554310>i still think ubuntu is just mid.Nothing wrong with being a little mid.>debian and mint are better.Mint I can see the argument for. Debian? Hell no. Maybe 10 years ago.
>>108554319>All of desktop linux is mid, and you should be tired of pretending it's not.
>>108554337I did a lot of debloating etc to make Windows 10 cooperate with the 8GB of my old laptop. But that's the thing. I don't want to fight with my operating system to make it usable. Installing Windows 10 again is just kicking the can down the road until 2032 as if that's really that far off. I don't want an operating system where I need to pirate it to get the only version of it that isn't a bloated shitty mess.
>>108554346 i can agree debian isn't great, but i do like it more than ubuntu. personally, i've been using it for servers more than desktop.
>>108554365Debian is not the absolute institution it once was. Ever since Ian Murdock ACK'd the project has been in a directionless downward spiral. It's sad really.
>>108554359my old thinkpad has 8gbs of ram and runs windows 10 fineish. the point im making is that if ubuntu is going to run on my laptop like windows, then i'll use windows so i can use more software or whatever.
>>108554392this is why mint won bro
>>108554399Mint is an Ubuntu distro. Ubuntu wins by proxy.
>>108554409ig both won then
>>108554398I don't need any software that runs on Windows and only Windows. I also don't want to be locked in to something that is only getting worse.
>>108554436fair, though i personally, i do sometimes need windows for some things. it all depends on what you need ig.

>>108554085Ubuntu makes the most retarded decision while still more or less staying popular. Most people migrate to something better or use Ubuntu as a [insert specific application a need] machine. They keep shooting themselves on the foot over and over, being based on Debian (who are retarded in their own way) became a con instead of a pro in the current days.
>>108554359i use windows 10 on 8gb ddr3 50 hours a week, it's fine.

>>108554102i want konata to lick my face
i genuinely, genuinely, want to like ubuntu. but! snap keeps pushing me away, and ubuntu keeps pushing untested new tools into ubuntu. testing things is fine, but throwing them into releases willy nilly, no thanks.
>>108555421apt purge snapd
apt purge snapd
>>108555421There is a pretty script to debloat Ubuntu https://github.com/polhdez/ubuntu-debullshitI don't hate Ubuntu, I used 24.04 LTS for some time, but the update 2 months ago made my SSD "read only" after a kernel update. It was solved by disabling VTx in Bios. It's older computers I don't mind fuck ups from time to time, but month after that, they pushed broken libexiv2 update that made all image software segfault. And it was last straw for Ubuntu for me. I use Devuan now.
>>108556956That script is honestly overkill.
>>108554392Since they closed bug 1, fact is corpo Linux only makes money on their server contracts and stopped caring about desktop. The companies that put desktop Linux on their employees' computers don't do it because it's Linux, they do it because it's not something else.

I have been using Ubuntu in WSL2 on Win11 for over 2 years and very happy with it, thinking of switching to it completely since microslop is just destroying windows.Back in 2017 my ex gave me her piece of shit HP laptop 4GB ram, I brought it to life with SSD, put Ubuntu on it since everyone said it uses less resources, Ubuntu was dogshit at page swapping etc. Browser would freeze after 4 tabs open, whole system would freeze and crash, closing tabs closing browser, never actually released the ram back to system like on windows where immediately whole system begins to breathe again. Even leaving it for hours it was still taking up RAM as if there were horrible memory leaks.I switched that laptop to Windows 10 and it was like a breath of fresh air, 20 browser tabs, paging worked flawlessly (eventually destroyed my piece of shit cheap SSD but it worked for as long as I needed it to build a PC).Now with 32GB of ram in WSL2 I haven't had any issues. I am also tempted by Fedora, but have not made my final decision. I definitely want something super stable since I do machine learning, but also want to be able to game CS2 once in a while, but those sub-distros of Ubuntu scare me, Arch-based distros also do not give me confidence, so its between Ubuntu and Fedora for me... big parent distributions.
>>108554447>>108554436Okay, so fire up a VM, use it like you use a toilet, do whatever you need to do, and get out. Because its VM you can also run pirated Photoshop/Adobe products without being scared of a virus.
>>108554085>changed to logo to garbage binliterally became garbage
>>108555409Debian is about to choose a DEI poojeta and they were already an inconsistent distro that doesn't know where to go. No calamares as default installer, old packages in the static (never call it stable) branch are not a problem but the distro always have some retarded problem because of the maintainers. There is OpenQA, just fucking use it Debian!
