Over the last 6 months, engineering discussions at my small startup have begun to completely revolve around AI. Using AI tools to generate code, using AI tools to debug things, using AI tools to automate how people use our application.

I'm pretty bored with it all, to be honest. I don't feel like we solve interesting problems anymore, we just staple APIs to claude and tell it to do everything now. We might come up with a good design for an engineering system, and the immediate instinct is to just plug it into Claude. There's nothing interesting about our work anymore.

I'm not here to talk doom and gloom about having our jobs automated away because there are some major downsides to doing things the way we do (very poor quality code, inconsistent behavior, feature creep, not to mention the impending 10x increase in API Tokens which will crush our budget), I'm just wondering: is this what software engineering is like now? Are all companies like this? I want to quit and find something interesting to work on without using LLMs, but I'm afraid that this is just what it's like now. Should I just quit software engineering and learn a skill that's less technology-oriented? I got into this industry because I love coding, but it seems like everyone is trying their best to not write code anymore.

Are there companies which are not going balls deep in LLMs?

Is this the first time you're living through a tech hype cycle? Some time ago everything was around big data. Then it was everything around data science. Then it was everything around crypto/web3. Now it's AI.
This hype cycle is biggest on my memory but I think it's normal. It will pass with time.
The fact that you are in a startup probably contributes to this. Startups move fast and get shit done, but moving fast also means that they are volatile. This is why I like a bigger company more. I embrace bureaucracy, tickets, process and all that stuff, in exchange you get the fact that it is stable and nobody is shipping in "incident mode".

In USA people always give the gross: before federal tax, state tax, social security tax, medicare tax (to pay for fuckin old people, and medical coverage... so you basically only keep about 55% of the paycheck. i.e. $60k - $80k is like $33k - $44k that you get to keep.

I'm going to learn embedded. My 4 years of university was all C/C++ so I'm very familiar with the languages, just need to get the domain-specific knowledge down. I'm sick of people at work trying to make AI solve every problem. It's a fucking token predictor - there's no sentience and it can't solve every problem. The only reason it's even decent at coding is because the last 30 years of coding questions and their answers (which is exactly how you interface with an llm, wow!) were all over the internet for these jews to train on and it still can't replace devs. I'm sick of people trying to convince me otherwise, especially when they're the ones dictating what I can and can't do, what I do or do not work on. Fuck off
