Absolutely grim retro>why aren't we able to solve this issue ourselvesBECAUSE THEY'RE INCOMPETENT
Just realized that 2 years ago when i applied for a job and did a hypothetical problem assessment, and they asked if i used chatgpt for the answers and said no (i didnt), they probably thought i was lying and i got denied for that, and now i have one more reason to hate AIshit because my good english skills as an esl that used to be an advantage, is now just another worthless “skill”
i dont have the needful in me no more
What could she possibly have to gain from making this up? This is a real life conversation that really happened and if you don't think so you're just weird. She did an epic road trip in her husband's untested first automobile, stopped at pharmacists to get fuel since that's where you could get gasoline, and ostensibly invented the first brake pad by using a piece of leather to improve the braking system. I think the DHS H1B stalling is working, I live in the epicenter of the problem I just got 3 call backs for the first time in months this week.
I work in a small, very old company. The CEO took me in when nobody else did, he treats me very well and always gives me lots of power, allows me to work from home, unlike the other employees, etc. The thing is, the pay is shit. I'm in the middle of a project (solo) that could probably make this company grow a lot, but I also got an offer that's almost 3x what I'm being paid. I know all that stuff about the company isn't your friend, but this is kinda like a "we are family" type of company, and I know for a fact the CEO never ever fired anyone, so I doubt he would fire me. Do I take the offer, or do I stay and hope I can make the company and my salary grow?
>>108557933tell your CEO or whoever else manages you the kind of situation you're in, maybe they'll give you a raise. presenting a higher offer tends to be a great way to get a raise
>>108557933If it's really a "we are family" type company then you should feel comfortable taking your offer to him and asking if there's anything he can do to make your decision easier. Sounds like you want to stay and the only thing making you reconsider is the money.

I wasn't fully awake so I don't remember why but I think it might be because I was struggling to stay awake in my chair and obviously staring at my coworker's tits in between head nods. I'm afraid I'm getting reported to HR or fired.
>>108558515why
At what point do companies realize that transferring all of your knowledge of the backbone of the product you are developing has been offloaded into a blackbox (people abusing LLMs spitting out thousands of lines of code per day) that you now are completely hand tied to, and need to pay a 3rd party (AI company) to even continue building and adding updates? At some point the AI companies are going to start gouging because there is no other option to the people now reliant on their tool
>>108558621Just eat the black pill.
>>108558654I just wonder if anybody is having these conversations lol, the companies that can support their own compute will be fine but unironically simpler software run by humans and not relying on AI LLM bullshit is the end result of all of this
I lied myself into a shitty tech job (Network maintenance) with AI answers to AI generated interview questions and a completely fake resume.Started last week. I have no idea what I'm doing. I can't code. I literally don't know anything and they're just paying me to sit here and say "I'll get it done as soon as I can." I think people are starting to notice. What do I do?
>>108558680Plenty of people are but the cost comparison is done by people way above most organizations. The biggest shake up is the possibility of distributed software production. This happened in engineering where most companies feed on the entrails of other companies they can now instead feed off of new ideas with the cheaper R&D cost. With AI this means a more distrusted form of software development can occur and thus crush smaller and larger competitors on the market who cannot adapt.

Over the last 6 months, engineering discussions at my small startup have begun to completely revolve around AI. Using AI tools to generate code, using AI tools to debug things, using AI tools to automate how people use our application.I'm pretty bored with it all, to be honest. I don't feel like we solve interesting problems anymore, we just staple APIs to claude and tell it to do everything now. We might come up with a good design for an engineering system, and the immediate instinct is to just plug it into Claude. There's nothing interesting about our work anymore.I'm not here to talk doom and gloom about having our jobs automated away because there are some major downsides to doing things the way we do (very poor quality code, inconsistent behavior, feature creep, not to mention the impending 10x increase in API Tokens which will crush our budget), I'm just wondering: is this what software engineering is like now? Are all companies like this? I want to quit and find something interesting to work on without using LLMs, but I'm afraid that this is just what it's like now. Should I just quit software engineering and learn a skill that's less technology-oriented? I got into this industry because I love coding, but it seems like everyone is trying their best to not write code anymore. Are there companies which are not going balls deep in LLMs?
