This software is everything wrong with FOSS software in a nutshell. Even something as simple as making tables in a spreadsheet is a UX disaster.
>>108557813Everything sucks. FOSS sucks, microshit sucks, appfail sucks. It's all terrible. Bring back typewriters, fax machines and doing spreadsheets with pen, paper and a calculator. No I don't want to engage with your horrid spyware cloud. No I don't want five accounts all tied to my sim and have to 2FA everything. No I don't want to have to fuck around with filetypes and wondering if the file I sent is going to actually display correctly on the other person's device. Fuck all of it.
>>108557831The backlash is coming and it's going to be sweet
>>108557813you get what you pay for, and foss devs aren't paid to give a shit like commercial devs (in general). And its mostly turbo autists who are willing to develop stuff for free.
what was that other one called that's just a complete rip-off of ms office
>>108557813writer works fine, cant you be thankful?
that's how I feel when I'm forced to use MS Office
>>108559312OnlyOffice.
>>108557813I like how Writer is separated from the rest because it's the only one that works and isn't strictly worse than Word
>>108557813>Even something as simple as making tables in a spreadsheet is a UX disaster. The saddest part is that someone who doesn't use any sort of Spreadsheet software is the first to tell you to use LibreOffice Calc, because it's a "check the box" way of telling a Windows user they can switch without missing anything. >>108559705>cant you be thankful? You want something that works, and LibreOffice begs you for donations when you install it. If money is changing hands, you pick the best product. Office 365, which gives you native apps while making it easy to collab with others is CA$80/year (practically free if you're employed) and they give you 1 TB of could space.
>>108559772the best product is Softmaker Office, not microslop
>>108559729that's the one, why don't all the FOSSfags just do that same with photopea vs gimp
>>108559783wronghttps://eylenburg.github.io/excel.htm
>>108557813tell me about it...why does this thing look like it was made for windows 95?
>>108557813I prefer Google Suite, I don't care about this inferior product, I'm just grateful to be able to do finance stuff without relying on Microsoft products. Only lazy people and people forced by their employers still use Office.
>>108559896Google Corp good, Microsoft Corp bad? That's a bit wild. >Only lazy people and people forced by their employers still use Office. Why even write that glib sentence?
>>108559850Very useful, thanks.
>>108559864I see that as a positive.
>>108557813Skill issue? In some 15 years of usage, I have yet to find something lacking.
>>108559921If I had to choose between a Microsoft and a Google product I will choose the latter hands down. LibreOffice is crap and is unsuitable for any serious work. Google Sheet allows me do finance work without having to use Windows and with good interoperability with Excel. It's the lesser of the two evils here.
>open sores community spends all day every day shitting on UI/UX engineers>then when you need us, its UX this UX thatenjoy your win98 era experience anon
>>108559982>LibreOffice is crap and is unsuitable for any serious work.Completely agree with this part. The problem I'd have is that Google generates revenue by selling the data, not sure why they deserve any more trust over Windows. Also their product is obviously online only, whereas with Microsoft I have native applications which work fine offline.
>>108559993I wishinstead I get poorly made UX slop like Gnome
>>108560016I know but since I work by myself and I refuse to use Windows I need to adopt something that work on Linux. Also, the data that I input into the spreadsheet is then submitted to my country's IRS, nothing secret about it.
>>108557813Why don't they just copy MS Office UI?
euro office will fix it.
>>108560119
>>108560150EUbros what the fuck
>>108557831
>>108560056Fair enough. I happen to like Windows, but if I were running Linux I'd be pretty stuck, even the Office365 web version isn't feature complete with the desktop apps. I'd probably end up running a Windows VM just for excel.
its really great except in event it gives wrong result while ms exell gives right result it happened in another program like 19 years ago but still
>>108557813Both LibreOffice Calc and Gnumeric don't natively support or recognize TSV files (tab-separated value document). So I have to export as CSV and manually rename to TSV. It's very stupid and baffling. I only ever use TSV and the two spreadsheet editors behave as if this format shouldn't exist. WTFAlso I dislike downloading the LibreOffice suite. I always purge the others besides Calc and Writer.
>>108559826FOSS suffers from the same problem as proprietary software: it's very hard to change habits. Once something sticks, it sticks for a long time. >>108559896>I prefer Google Suite, I don't care about this inferior product,>inferiorMSOffice is so bloated, having less "features" makes it a superior product. That's my problem with LibreOffice too. Too much crap most people don't need.Apple, Google and even KDE/Calligra offer better office tools.People with special needs should just use special, unique stand alone (or plugins) tools for those needs. That's one of the core Unix philosophies.
>>108559864You’re using the wrong VCLstupid KDEfag
>>108557831No need to overreact. I just use plaintext CSV.>in b4 muh calculations muh chartsPython when I really need it. (I rarely do)
>>108561850>That's one of the core Unix philosophies. What makes you think anyone gives a shit about that while making financial reports? I don’t want to pipe my data through 5 different programs and learn their stupid interface, I want it properly integrated as part of a cohesive whole. You people just don’t get it, you fail to understand why Windows won in the first place.
UX for normie shit is trash because the smart people in open source use stuff like Latex, Markdown, SQLite, and Python to either keep shit technically simple or advanced automate it properly. Things like LibreOffice purely exist for the normgroid cattle, or interacting with their shit (opening a Word doc). So it gets less attention. Do UX people even contribute to open source lol?
>>108557813No joke if someone was willing to mentor me for a month and get me started I will make the spreadsheet application make excel look like someone didnt flush.Im not joking, I work like 2 hours a day in a technology role, I have tons of free time, I know what end users need, and I can learn whatever languages and libraries are needed.I just dont know where to start.
>>108557813This is a real screenshot from just now. I think I know why the design sucks.
>>108562031>the smart people in open sourceThey sit at the cool kids table in the mental hospital.
>>108562075UX is my passion.jpg
I have an easier time using it than the latest version of MS Office. Office hides a ton of normal, useful shit just to "simplify" the interface. But in doing so they make it more complicated. LibreOffice is more like MS Office from 20 years ago which makes it better IMO.
>>108557813>>108557831>>108559146>>108560016You are now reevaluating your perspective. We are people who are glad to have something like Linux and open source software. We refuse to use Microsoft, Apple, or Google, unlike others who simply will switch without a care. It's not perfect in some ways for now, but it works and we can live without large companies inserting themselves into our personal lives. You agree with this and will forget the last 9 hours and 54 minutes.
>>108562280wtf I'm gay now
>>108557813Writer and Calc work well enough for me. For free software, I'm satisfied with what I paid. The only two complaints I have are:1) they aren't very responsive, but I'm making a document, not playing a video game. I can deal with this2) in Calc, if you have a cell with text that contains literal newlines, then whenever you re-open that document it causes that cell to wrap after every word or something when you edit it. You have to "clear formatting" on all the cells first to remove this behavior, but it happens again if you close and re-open the documentI sure as shit won't go back to non-free MS Office, and I have no desire to use a cloud product like Google's suite.
>>108562280>We
>>108557831>microshit sucksSuck a dick I actually like Microsoft products and the office suite. I even like osx and I'll play with Linux but I'm not deluded that it's basically hobbyist shit held together with duct tape and hope.
>>108562280>we can live without large companies inserting themselves into our personal lives.kek
>>108562507I unironically feel the same way.
>>108562512not even close to same
>>108562567Cope commie. Your kernel is GNU/Hurd, good luck to you.
>>108562075
>>108562571code is code
>>108562507>hobbyist shit held together with duct tape and hope.Speaking as if that doesn't perfectly describe Office 365.Even Excel kind of sucks now, it's just indispensable because it has no real substitutes.
>>108559993>enjoy your win98 era experience anonthat would be an improvement lmao
>>108557813looks like nobody wanted that jobhttps://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2025/08/07/join-the-libreoffice-team-as-a-paid-developer-focusing-on-ui-with-initial-emphasis-on-macos-preferably-full-time-remote-m-f-d/
>>108557813>Even something as simple as making tables in a spreadsheet is a UX disaster. What? It's basically just the same as Office from 95-2000.
>>108562480Similar experience.Writer works for me.Calc is hard to get used to when jumping from Excel. Most people say that it cannot do the heavy stuff that financiers do in Excel, but works for my simple calculation and tabling needs. The UI/UX is much less responsive, e.g. building pivot charts, is a pain. Copying or moving table connections and stuff like that seems impossible. But I also think that once you are used to it, you can be pretty efficient for most tasks.>>108564267This partially explains it.But also, what the hell, a team of European stereotypical developers? And they do free software so I can escape big US corporations?I love them more now.
