what is it about this that severely affects the way people talk for the worse? chatrooms used to be enjoyable
>>
discord isn't just a text chat service. it can show your friends your activities, you can stream to each other, do voice calls, upload all sorts of files and images through it. It appeals to severe ADHD who can't simply send a simple message. because of how easy it is to host your own servers, it's also appeals to psychos and control freaks who create their own cult of personality within an established bubble of friends.
>>
>>108562940
you just hit the nail on the head. i feel like people's personalities on it started going downhill when they introduced nitro as well
>>
>>108562940
When there are retards who only care about, "Oh look, my profile picture is a GIF!" you see how we've reached an era of irreversible autism. With that whole age verification thing they backed down on, you realize what a bottomless pit Discord is.

A tool that legally spies on you.
>>
>>108562806
Lack of anonymity and people having control over the chat
>>
>>108562940
The insular nature of servers means that Discord will never last, thoughever.
Reddit mods and Wikipedia editors have infinitely better goyjak control freak jobs.
>>
It is control.
Most big anime/social servers are owned by a team of undesirable people who can just harrass anyone who says something they don't like so active members are afraid of speaking out their thoughts freely so eventually all servers become echochambers like reddit.
>>
>>108563284
if we never advanced beyond irc and forums there would still be servers that operate that way
just don't be a retard
don't use those servers
>>
>>108562806
it's very simple
permanent chat history
chatrooms used to be ephemeral, you'd join but you couldn't see what was written before you joined. it was like a living room you could in and out of and just shoot the shit without having to think that any future member might not only see everything you've ever typed, they can SEARCH for all of what you've written and sift through everything.
pure retardation. this is why everyone acts differently
>>
>>108562806
Old brown men like me can talk to white girls with discord. Why take this from me?
>>
>>108562806
Public servers develop a hierarchy akin to reddit where mods seriously think they're hot shit and you have people sucking up to them, so you end up with very rude and unpleasant communities. I only ever use it to talk to friends of 5+ years these days
>>
>>108565661
This reminded me xmpp days when our groupchat of few people got fully indexed by google somehow and people started finding our chat by googling programming questions.
>>
>>108562806
Discord is social media, not a singular chatroom.
You can link a dozen of accounts there, post images and videos, do voice calls and video calls, you can do streaming as well as display your current activities from listening/watching to gaming.
It attracts the worst of the worst as you can spend money to directly customize your profile, attracting hideous e-boys, e-girls and e-couples, it is legitimately run by those alone, and to not forget pedophiles.
Then you have those combined in 1 server that is basically just money laundering from child porn and/or abuse of mentally ill people.
>>
>>108562806
it's reddit for zoomers/alphies
that's all you need to know
>>
>>108562806
it is mostly young people who get emotional quick, also server mods and bots have too much power and can get too many details about average user, I don't like it much it is good enough

this. can't banter with the boys without some butthurt faggot trying to dig up blackmail from chats years ago.
>>
>>108562806
Nothing about it severely affects the way people talk, it simply included more people. Chatrooms used to be all reasonably educated, white, nerdy Americans who were there for roughly the same reasons. Now internet society is full of browns, feminists and contrarian hipsters with a communism fetish. Simple as.

Giving them any platform was always going to be insufferable, it doesn't matter if its Dick Sword or MSN.
>>
Why do you all care about what Discord is/does when none of you have friends?
>>
>>108566441
That is precisely why they care
If they had friends they would be on a private server with them and not care about public servers
But they're forced to use public servers full of social outcasts like themselves
>>
>>108566466
you and your "friends" shouldn't be using discord anyway.
>>
>>108562806
I consider discord "socialising" (and also this site to an extent) like the digital equivalent of being blasted on anti-depressents where you don't feel any pain but also no longer feel any joy

Everyone is a namefag so your brain thinks you're socialising with friends but since you're all anonymous there is 0 social consequence or risk to saying anything so everyone just says the most offensive / degenerate / braindead things possible.
However since it's not real life socialising you're not building social connections with anyone who can actually make your life better or help you IRL so there is basically 0 reward either. People spend hours on discord because they're trying to chase a kind of social reward that never comes. You may get 30 lmao reacts to a post and feel a hit of dopamine but you close the computer and realise all the social validation you got from internet strangers actually means absolutely nothing and makes no change to your real life. It's all just people spending hours trying to chase a sense of social acceptance and security but they're looking in the wrong place.
>>
And what chat utilities that people could use have you "anons" coded?
>>
>>108566526
I contributed to a matrix client a bit. A proper client, a native application, not Electron bullshit.
How about you?
>>
Is there a viable alternative to Discord? Probably not. I'd sure like to hear what it may be, but as far as I am aware, there is no other service that provides all of the great things Discord does. Only services that exist are half as useful as Discord is. And if you actually have friends, good luck convincing them to move to something half as useful "just because".
>>
>>108566538
>Is there a viable alternative to Discord?
Yes, plenty.
An they are all better than Discord. They don't have a ridiculous 10 MB file size limit like the tranny platform, and don't need you to pay for emojis.

Doesn't matter if teamspeak, xmpp or matrix, all of them are objectively factually better than fucking Discord.
>>
>>108566571
If it doesn't have:
>easy screen sharing
>persistent channels
>similar if not same server philosophy
>sophisticated roles/permission systems
>bot integration
then literally nobody will switch to what you just listed. Because without all of the stuff that make Discord, Discord, those programs are half as useful (or even less, lol) than Discord.
>>
>>108566592
>easy screen sharing
matrix has that and mumble as well and they don't limit your bitrate as hard as discord
>persistent channels
who doesn't have presistent channels?
>similar if not same server philosophy
Are you retarded? The Discord "server philosophy" is complete utter garbage. Everything else is better.
>sophisticated roles/permission systems
Again: Better implemented by everyone else. Discord is again the bottom of the barrel, the worst of them all. Imagine paying money for a role.
>bot integration
Again better done by everyone else. Of course OpenSource platforms have better opportunities than fucking Discord here.

Now lets cover where Discord is even worse:
>10 MB filesize limit, unless you pay
>cant send custom emojis in DMs, unless you pay
>Electron App
>scans your PC and uploads all your running processes to Discord
>having to pay for anything in the first place (Nitro)
>atrocious bad bitrates on voice and screen shares, unless you pay
>role system that is convoluted garbage
>memory leaks

You don't use Discord because it's good. Nobody on this world believes that Discord would be made well.
>>
>>108566592
Discord could require from you to shove a dildo up your asshole and upload a pic of it, and you would still use it.
>>
>>108566101
Iranian numbers looks different actually, there are different versions of the numeric system and Iran has a version different from that of Arabic or Latin numeric system
>>
The currently popular chat app isn't responsible for any perceived "changes" in "how people speak" you absolute schizoid.
Not technology. >>>/b/
>>
>>108566880
>mumble has screen sharing
why did you bother writing the rest of that post if you're just going to be so wrong that I stop reading there
>>
>>108562940
who gives a fuck lmao who the fuck is joining random ass servers nigga

i have like 3 friend groups and im in 3 private discords. I meet people irl sometimes who play games and i add them on discord. Discord is amazing before this my friends and i had to use teamspeak, curse voice way back but now discord is just too good.
>>
>>108566571
everything you listed cant even do 1/100th of what discord allows you to do lmao
