>old Kindle owners (pre-2013) will unironically get locked out of their devices (no new e-books) starting May 20lmao, this makes no sense, an EPUB is an EPUB, normalfags should've jailbroken their shit
>>108566000If they don't want you to buy books from them anymore, then don't. Here you go: https://annas-archive.gl/
>>108566031I already use an old Kobo with downloaded DRM-free ebooks (bought and not bought) so this news doesn't affect me.
I don't remember the last time my Kindle was connected to the internet. It certainly wasn't any time in the 20's. I just sideload everything.
>>108566000will still work with cable transfersso no problem, only retards buy/browse kindle store on their reader itself
>>108566000>no new e-booksYou won't be able to *buy* new e-books, you'll still be able to read downloaded e-books. And since you can't download e-books from Amazon anymore, it pretty much means that you'll only be able to read pirate books. Absolute genius move.>an EPUB is an EPUBActually, not sure about the other models, but I have the Kindle 4 and it doesn't support epubs, you have to convert them. They probably did it to stop people from using epubs and rely entirely on Amazon format, but thanks to blessed Calibre this was never a huge problem.
>>108566000the solution is so simple:>buy kobo>install koreader>download books from AA>transfer them to kobo>read for free forevernormies are so retarded
>buy book from 1930>still worksEat shit
>>108566000I have an old-ass kindle without any internet and use it with calibre just fine>>108566428the average ebook user is probably a 52 year old woman reading romance books
>>108566631>the average ebook user is probably a 52 year old woman reading romance booksnot true. those women are reading on their phones.
>>108566000not letting them into your store is one thing, but essentially pre-bricking them is a whole different ballgame.
Imagine having the attention span to read books in 2026. No seriously I envy you.
>>108566000how can they lock out devices that are not connected to the internet?
>>108566000What changed with e-books? I don't think books have changed much in the last 5000 years.
>>108566782>>108566987They aren't actually bricking anything, you just can't add new ebooks. Anything on the Kindle will still be accessible.Phones suffer the same fate. You can't access Google services on anything lower than android 6 which was released in 2015Honestly surprised the batteries on Kindles just haven't gone completely flat after 14+ years even if they aren't stressed or cycled much.
Amazon remotely deleted copies of 1984 from Kindle readers in the past. The literal equivalent of burning books.Amazon still has this power and can use it again at any time.
>>108566000amazon are such snakes. I have used Kindle for a decade. 6 months ago I decided I wanted to try the Kobo color because it looked like a better quality e-reader. So I buy it, assuming I can transfer my books over.Turns out Amazon shut off digital downloads of your library last year, so the only way to get your amazon books into Calibre in order to strip the DRM and convert them into EPUBs or KEPUBs is to download every book onto your existing kindle, plug your kindle into your computer, pull the files directly off your device to Calibre, and then proceed to clear the DRM...This requires several Calibre plugins to achieve. The headache of this process is far beyond any non-tech literate person and has created an entire generation of people who have a library forever locked within Kindle's ecosystem... and they had no idea when they signed up that they would be betrayed like this, because they waited until people were a decade into their ecosystem before shutting off the exits...
>>108567034Androids run code which can have security vulnerabilities.Kindles display static documents. This analogy doesn't work.
>>108566000if you are dumb enough to buy epubs then you deserve to be treated like a product
>>108566979It definitely got harder compared to 15 years ago. But if you go somewhere without your phone where there is nothing else to do you'll start reading. Parks work well, train rides, or in the bathtub
>>108567061If it was about security then anything but the absolute most recent android would be unsupported. Its a cost benefit analysis at the end of the day.
>>108566631I've got an old Kindle too, but it recently decided to fuck up and no open old books I had on it (I tap to open the book, it hangs, nothing loads, then the book itself disappears from the carousel), so I think it might be fucked.
>>108566000Jailbreak your Kindle, install Koreader, use Calibre to send books to your Kindle over wi-fisimplest shit on the planet
>>108566000people actually buy ebooks? curious.
>>108566000That's not locked out, that's unable to add things
>>108566062this. Kindle doesn't need to be jailbroken.
>>108567034you cannot reset the device or it will end up bricked.
>>108566000WHERE IS THE FUCKING ARTICLEWHEREIS THE FUCKINGSOURCE
>>108567034they are absolutely bricking the devices >"If you deregister or factory reset these devices, you will not be able to re-register or use these devices in any way.">or use these devices in any wayimagine if a factory reset bricked every 10 year old iphone and made them impossible to use for anything at all
>>108567677
based, if someone is so tech illiterate that he needed a dedicated device to read pdf files he can just buy a new one
All this tells me is Amazon knew they fucked up by making the devices as durable as they did
>>108567684Huh, in the email they sent me for my old Kindle, they gave me a code for 20% off a new Kindle as well as a $20 voucher for the Kindle Store (if I get a new Kindle).
recommend me an ebook reader
>>108566062>will still work with cable transfersCable transfers of Amazon books was banned last year. They won't let you download them any more, only send them directly to the device
just buy books
>>108567759I dont mind paying for booksWhat i dont like is Amazon's universal backdoor, among the other nasty things it does
>>108566061This is where I am. Why buy books when I can get more than I'll ever read from Project Gutenburg for free?
>>108567735He obviously means drm free books that you get from somewhere else.>>108567759Ironically, what this update will do is to stop people from being able to buy books, but you can still pirate them.
>>108567836>project gutenbergtime to shill my favorite book on gutenberg: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/28553It's over 100 years old, explains how stuff works with tons of illustrations
>>108567676turn on cnn
>>108566057Very nice. Enjoy your old Kobo with downloaded DRM-free ebooks.
