France is transitioning government desktops to Linux, with each ministry required to formalize its implementation plan by autumn 2026.

Now, which distro should they pick?

I guess they'll have to go to SUSE (German) for corporate support. I just found https://www.mageia.org (never heard of it) which is French.
>>
>>108571860
They should install Gentoo, but I suspect a custom Ubuntu-based distro is more likely. Cause French gendarmerie have been using one for almost 2 decades, GendBuntu.
>>
>>108571860
my condolences to french government workers
>>
>>108571964
All they do is send emails back and forth, they'll be fine
Only real work requires windows, i'm talking engineering and such
>>
France is the only country in Europe which at least attempts to keep up with LLMs.
Mistral is not really state of the art but it's up there with mid level models. And Germany and the UK seem to have just completely given up?
>>
>>108571964
Microsoft could always open up a Paris HQ, they did that to pull Munich back into their orbit.
>>108571969
Yes, but think of the poor accountants who'll have to suffer LibreOffice.
>>
>>108571867
They should probably create their own.
>>
>>108571973

Where do you think Google Deepmind came from? The UK has always been a major hub for AI research.
>>
>>108571860
Debian stable.

Government workers uses a computer for 5 things:
>browse government web portals
>pdfs
>emails
>text documents
>spreadsheet documents
That's it. Linux is good enough for all of those.

Sorry, can't comment on that. I am on my mandatory 30-day vacation, and after that I will go to the doctor for free.

What else does a government worker needs?

>>108572024
Pic rel just works.
>>
>>108572042
It's actually really horrible, and they'll suffer tons of compatibility issues.

OnlyOffice is better and doesn't have the compatibility issues
>>
>>108572092
Fuck off
>>108572105
OnlyOffice is indeed much better, but you'll notice they don't display their business address that prominently. On their web page (which looks like a scam site), at the bottom you find

>ONLYOFFICE is owned by Ascensio System SIA, a Latvian company which is a subsidiary of OnlyOffice Capital Group Pte. Ltd. The beneficiaries of OnlyOffice Capital Group Pte. Ltd. are listed in the registry of Singapore companies by ACRA. The business profile is available here.

While it's "Latvian" there are claims it's Russian connected. That'll just go nowhere in France right now.
>>
>>108572042
it's not about else, but linux in general works like shit with bugs and glitches
more than that it might work flawless on one machine, but have problems on another
or just break without a reason one day
>>
>>108572007
Why not?
>>108572081

2012 called; it wants its memes back.
>>
>>108572105
>>108572116
OnlyOffice is a god damn fucking Electron app that drains your battery and takes forever to save/load. Why do you need a 3Ghz processor to display text, when fucking shitty laptops from the 90's could do this just fine?
>>
>>108571973
>governments should be focused on creating their own version of bonzi buddy
does /g/ really
>>
>>108572128
I think it's because they wanted to make it easy to handle web/server deployments. So yes, it becomes shit in different ways to libre office, but the interface and compatibility are at least very near 1:1.

No one is beating excel with webshit, they still use win32/GDI for it.
>>
>>108572081
It's not 2004 anymore grandpa.
France is recommending open document formats since 2010.
Every French government worker is required to accept open document formats since 2015.

Based and kek'd.

>>

If they're really on ODF, they'll certainly have a much smoother transition.
>>
>>108572151
good morning and have a nice day
>>
>>108572149
LibreOffice has the same degree of compatibility. If you want the interface to function the same as MS Office, the very first thing you see upon starting LO is a prompt asking you if you want to enable Ribbon.
>>
>>108571938
>gender army
communists lmao
>>
>>108572178
Bitch please, I just installed it and immediately ran into an issue. ODF doesn't support structured tables
>The ODF standard currently lacks support for structured references. When saving a file in .ods format, structured references are converted to direct references, preserving only the values at the time of saving. Efforts to introduce structured references in the ODF Standard are underway.

Plus somehow, this software runs like it's written in javascript but on my machine. Clunkiest crap ever, just more FOSS shitware inflicted on the world by idiots and pushed by those motivated by ideology instead of engineering.

Does Mandrake/Mandriva still exist? Aren’t they from France? Or maybe openSnuSnu as a European company?

OpenMandriva is French, but they really won’t like it. It’s the chud distro, and it’s not enterprise.

european governments decide this all the time and then a few years later it gets scrapped again due to a mixture of obstructionists boomer government servants who refuse to learn anything new, politicians bought off by microsoft and critical underfunding of IT departments, which might also be filled with diversity hires
