Is there a /g/ approved brand or model for fusion splicers, or are they all basically the same? I only need to do a single cable at a time, not one of the fancy ones that can splice ribbon.

Zoomer you don't need this. Splicing makes the cable worse. Also this is obsolete when you can just get AliExpress to ship you cables overnight. Why would you want to do this?
