Would you be impressed if AI could port Notepad++ to Linux in 30 minutes? And, short of AGI, what would AI have to do to make you, an AI skeptic, impressed?
Even AI wouldn't be able to do it because some minor change in glibc or some shit will break it next week. Win32 API is the only stable ABI in Linux. This is why no one wants to write software for Linux, has nothing to do with preinstalled OS's in Dells or whatever cope troonix users trot out.
>>108579186Kate already exists
>>108579186wtf does AGI have to do with LLMs
>>108579186Considering linux is a kernel, and has no concept of a gui, I am not sure what a port would even mean.
>>108579186There already exists a Notepad++ port for Linux. It is called Notepadqq.
>>108579186If it could make the Guile version of emacs perfectly feature complete and super performant, and also port all the cool emacs addons to scheme, then I would be Impressed.
What's so great about Notepad++?
>>108579186I’ve been hearing that we’re months away from agi for 3 years now, so I would certainly expect it to create a simple notepad app for linux when there’s hundreds of github repos it can leech off of>what would AI have to do to make you, an AI skeptic, impressed?genetically modified catgirls
>>108579186>still no syntax highlighting for GLSL source code
kate and gedit are available whats notepad++
>>108579757>what is fbdev
>>108579902Ok. Create an exact clone of Notepad++ for Linux in 30 minutes. You are allowing to rip off any existing code you have access to. Go.
>>108579186There's geany.
>>108579971>oh you can’t multiply 7489966663 * 6396680624143 in your head in milliseconds? guess you can’t compete with even i486 lmao
>>108579812It fucking crashes withing 2 minutes after fresh install.
>>108579186>Would you be impressed if AI could port Notepad++ to Linux in 30 minutes? And, short of AGI, what would AI have to do to make you, an AI skeptic, impressed?I'm an LLM skeptic. LLMs are already impressive. But LLMs aren't AI. LLMs will never achieve AGI.
>>108579186“port notepad++ to linux”every time nocoder AI-maxis say anything, they embarrass themselves. what do you think we’re doing at work all day? installing gentoo and ricing our desktop? OP do you think tinkertrannying = SWE? “hey boss check it out, i ported assfucklinux to rust”what would genuinely impress me is if claude can build a high fidelity MMO or FPS from start to finish. but if you prompted it to do so, you know what would happen, right OP? it would either flat out refuse your request, or build you an html5 game that looks like shit and nothing like what you ordered.because at the end of the day, it can only parrot source code from shit on github, aka system tools and web frameworks. and that’s cool. that’s fine. i greatly enjoy being able to hit TAB and compete the for loop or function i was about to create. but that’s about it.
>>108580010And the invention of the computer wasn't a big deal?
>>108579186Notepad++ is a wintoddler shitware that exists only because wintoddlers can't into vim or emacs. For wintoddler who migrated to Linux there's already Kate which is better because unlike noteshit it supports language server integrations (still worse than neovim with lazyvim though).
>>108579186Good morning saar, claude do the needful and port notepad++ to linux, my windows has virus for some reason but i love notepad++, i have all the bobs n vagene links on it.
>>108580091In retrospect a net downside for humanity as a whole
>>108580118>parody of a human being communicating entirely through ebonics>shilling emacs in current_yearthe memes write themselves
>>108579186Don't get your hopes up, cattle.
>>108579186There are plenty of similar text editors on Linux. Also, why are you asking about hypotheticals, you complete waste of time and air? Spend all of this energy on killing yourself.
>>108579186https://www.geany.org/
>>108579974I use geany. It's fast like notepad++ because they're both built on scintilla, unlike kate. I don't know why I use it over gedit though. I guess I'm just used to it.
>>108579186it's a useless program written by a schizo (not the good kind)I don't care
>>108579213
>>108579186Someone should port foobar2000 to linux and it shouldnt be me
>>108579186No, because it would be a buggy and slow pile of dogshit
>>108579186your question is so out of touch it's cute. the more work an ai does for me, the less i want it because that's all work that i don't understand. please, realize that i already think compilers are traitors that need to face the wall
>>108580118Crazy it took this long for someone to say this.Though I began using emacs on windows 20 years ago, long before I switched to Linux for daily driver.
>>108579186>>108579812Linux version is worse than the ogI'm running the og with Wine and it's working well
>>108581588>posting an 88 with 88% batteryTRVKE
>>108580059It just can't one shot very complex stuff. Opus 4.5 made me an O(N) Omaha multiway terminal node evaluator. I never found that in either code, or even just a paper.
>>108579186>Would you be impressed if AI could port Notepad++ to Linux in 30 minutes? No. And odds are it would be significantly buggier and slower than just running the windows version through wine.>what would AI have to do to make you, an AI skeptic, impressed?Actually be highly reliable, not have stupid censorship/restrictions, be capable of running on common cheap consumer hardware, and not be dominated by a handful of closed incestuous companies who would happily destroy anything for power.
>>108579852It works as expected all the time. It's reliable, simple and functional. Has many features too, remembers previously open files, etc...
>>108579186No. A CS student could do that. And to impress me or to even warrant the name AI it would have to show actual intelligence, ie problem solving, which it has exactly zero of.Even a raven can figure out how to use a vending machine.
>>108579186Notepad++ is based on Scintilla so you could do that even without AGI.
>>108579186I would be impressed if AI could port notepad++ in one prompt with no bugs.AI is already impressive though imo. The issue with AI hype isn't AI itself, it's the extreme exaggeration of what it can do and the way con artists claim it is a 1 to 1 replacement for a human in practically every field when it clearly isn't. It's a very cool tool with capabilities and limitations but the sunk cost convinces billionaire bag holders to lie and tell you it's Data from Start Treck or something.
>>108579186Nural networks are neat and have their uses. Just not anywhere near the marketing, and it's going to come crashing down with the middle class taking the brunt.
>what would AI have to do to make you, an AI skeptic, impressed?permanently and irreparably bricked the computers and smartphones of every person on earth who uses AI
>>108579186But I have vim in linux so why would i need this?
>>108579186If it can't add a VI mode I don't give a shit.
