Now that /g/ is finally not priced out anymore, will you stop hating on apple?

>stop hating on apple
Never "hated" them.
I used macOS (nee OS X) off-and-on in the 2000's and 2010's for work, but they've not been my choice for personal devices since about 2011 or 2012.
I will always recommended over Wanders for complete normies without a brain, especially those who only use their computer for a browser, email, photos and media player. For anyone technical, I will help them figure out if Linux a good option. If Linux is not a good call for them, I would never recommend it, and instead recommend Apple.

That said, I haven't wasted time with Apple since they starting crapping up OS X (in my opinion) starting with Lion.
>>
>>108580224

idk feels kind of wrong that they took my iPhone and put a whole MacOS on it, I am very conflicted

it has a usecase, probably best option for schools, app development, some vibe coding, but just like any other mac -- useless for ML

Not that anon, but I have 128GB ECC in my workstation.
Some of us do more than shitpost on 4chen.
>>
>>108580317
just because you have 128GB RAM doesn't mean you use them
>>
>>108580305
I do.. a laptop should at least have 16GB for comfortable use. A desktop/workstation starts at 32GB for me..

I mean just look at what chrome or firefox uses if you open more than 10 tabs.

I hear they will release a 12GB version later? I might be tempted.. albeit 12 is still not enough.
>>
>>108580452
what are some of your use cases that require 128gig of ram?
>>
>>108580452
I have a 5y old macbook air with 16gig and I never had any issues with it. If apple says they can provide a smooth user experience with 8gig, then I trust them

eight gigabytes if fine if you are running window maker or something similarly light weight. although since you can't run linux out of the box and are stuck with macos that they will stop proving updates for you are buying a machine with artificial countdown to end of life.
but all of that you can work around the real problem is not the ram or lack thereof but the fact the storage is not replaceable.
how is a company going to properly decommission this type of hardware? they will probably drill the chip and call it a day which means it is basically garbage.
user replaceable storage should be a requirement.

if i need something cheap i will just buy an x86 chromebook, install a bios, and run linux or an old thinkpad like a normal person. i like the little red clit
>>
>>108580224
Do you think calling people poor and trying to shame them is a good marketing strategy, you subhuman call centre creature?
>>
I thought of getting a macbook or mac mini myself, but considering unified memory yes, 8gb seems not enough. Specially because I very briefly used an M3 Air with 8gb and it wasn't an amazing experience. I cannot imagine if you want to, for instance, run a very specific windows program on it, Parallels will be running that shit just fine with 8GB while you have your web browser open and plenty of other shit. The worst thing about this is of course that it isn't upgradeable. You're just stuck with that shit. I guess people take very good care of their apple machines and resell them a year later because I wouldn't want to be stuck with something like this while simple applications keep wasting more and more RAM.
But sure, as I understand from Apple fans "8gb instead of 12 or 16 is so it doesn't cannibalize other models". I've seen this term thrown around too when justifying that Air models don't have ProMotion or whatever the fuck they call just standard 120hz and variable refresh rate. There are these price gates in Apple products very tightly adjusted even on the used market I noticed. Like for instance, the only used M2 Pros I can find equivalent in price to the M4 Air are precisely the shitty ones (13 inch models). I could swear the M4 Minis went up in price too.
>>
>>108580555
To be fair you're looking at about a decade of updates. But I agree storage should be replaceable, it's not like the machine is going to start looking like a thinkpad the moment you allow this.
I guess for this purpose the M4 Mini is better, at least that one you can replace the SSD on. I imagine a SN770X would be pretty good there. Actually the M4 Mini shits on the Neo, it's just people want a fucking laptop.
>>
>>108580586
>o be fair you're looking at about a decade of updates.
My primary desktop is skylake and i have even older machines that function as my server or media player attached to my television.
Computer tech has his a plateau and decade or more is till very usable. It is not like it was in the 90's.
>>
>>108580609
Depends on what you want out of hardware. I have spare parts I could use for half a build but I have no intention of using multiple machines myself. Same with phones, you couldn't pay me to use anything but the last maybe 2 to 3 smartphones I owned. I even give some of this shit away. You want a 6600XT? Come to my house and it's free. I'm not even fucking kidding.
>>
>>108580224
Not going to buy a device with soldered in memory and storage, ever.
>>
>>108580645
>You want a 6600XT? Come to my house and it's free. I'm not even fucking kidding.
not enough vram
the one thing i have been spending money on is gpus with vram for ai. i have a 16gb 6800xt along with 3080 a 3060, and a few mi25.
the real problem is getting multiple gpu's into a single machine. but running multiple gpus is power intensive and a pain.
thankfully i am able to eek out 20t/s with an old quadro m5000 if i run qwen 3.5 35B A3B and that is more than enough for my main server as an always on ai.
>>
I have 64 GB of ram on my shitpost machine and 16 GB of ram on my work pc

it doesnt really matter, I never noticed anything

it has 8GB entirely because thats what the A18 processor has tacked onto it. Its less of a market positioning decision, more them emptying their spare mobile SoC trashbins into laptop cases and pretending this makes it a legit laptop.
>>
>>108580224

I bought one of these things and love it. I like MacOS more than I expected to.
I wanted something to primarily use for writing, music production and the occasional video games, and it’s handled everything pretty well.
8GB of RAM seems to be plenty for what I use it for. I was very skeptical that it would be, but it’s enough.
A used Air looks like a better move for someone who doesn’t want to work around the Neo’s limitations, though.
>>

Apple should have made this a decade or more ago. apple fanboys think its some major disruptive thing no, that was google doing what you should have done making chromebooks and acting like the price is crazy good value.

16gb ram is fine and get a cheap external storage
>>
I currently have a laptop with a 7480U (16gb) that I don't use it outside home, so it's always stuck to the desk, and a beefy PC (5900x with a 9070xt and 32GB of RAM)
Tell me, why would I want to go with Apple hardware (perhaps replace my laptop)?
The only thing that seems actually decent enough price and performance wise is the mac mini. But now I have to pay extra for a lot of other software. Parallels for the occasional application (no, not games) I need to run from Windows. My external drive no longer can be NTFS unless I also pay for a fucking driver. I thought of getting a TV and turning this gaming PC into basically a console. But that seems wasteful. I have twice the ram on a fucking games machine than the main machine I would use? That seems ridiculous to me.
>>
>>108580224
I really fucking want to love Apple, but even their best GPUs (even on their desktop computers) are nowhere near being good enough compared to RTX 5090, which makes me not want to spend $5000 on their desktop computers.
>>
>>108582808
Doesn't really matter much when they don't have software compatibility. At best you'd need a really fucking expensive machine just to run shit through Parallels
>>
>>108580224
Don't get the hype. The M4 Mac mini has been ~$430 for a while now. Snagged it in 2024.
Never hated macos, especially the one I'm on (15.7.3). Still has quite a bit of bloat, but it's fine for 2026. The hardware masks most of that through brute force and dedicated acceleration paths for caching, cryptography, caching, prefetching and insanely good branch prediction.q
>>
>>108580224
Anons coulda just bought a used MBA if they wanted an Apple laptop. Neo is for students and grandmas.

I was shopping for a used M1 Air right when they announced this thing, ironically. I ended up buying the Neo since I suspected the low RAM wouldn’t be an issue for me and thought the Neo would be easier to repair.
