I’m not a fan of KDE either, and as a frequent user of Windows, I’ve never understood the idea that it’s “Like Windows but better on linux”. Krashes really isn’t a meme, and it’s loaded with lots of very crappy K-prefixed crapware.

GNOME is low key and just stays out of my way.

Look if I don't get working tray icons (no, not that fucking extension that doesn't allow left click actions) I have no use for this. Last time I tried GNOME (50 beta) I had a program running in the background, it wasn't in the "dash", it wasn't in the notification area, my only way to close it was through its task manager. It's absolutely ridiculous the hate they have for such a small fucking feature that every other single desktop has had "because it's not the right way to do things". But they haven't come up with a "right way" in fucking years.
>>
I tried kde, I tried gnome.
They both work fine, any normal person wouldn't have any problem with either of them.
You can now resume your inspired fight.
>>
>>108588276
The system tray has done more damage than good in the long run. GNOME is correct, but doesnt have the pull to make such a based move.

Sad really, I even got super exited to go back to a performant system, ZED launch was literally instantaneous when I clicked the icon compared to Windows' almost 3 seconds.
But the stability is awful with my setup, and frankly my experience over almost 2 decades of random hardware.
>>
>>108588268
the tray should become a grouped icon for "hidden programs" in the dock, it extremely redundant with W11's implementation of right click actions on dock icons.
>>
>>108585749
>sir please no install linux gnome virus me fix window operate system send google gift card no redeem please bitch bastard
>>
>>108588633
It's very fucking simple.
The GNOME dash icons should have every functionality that's exposed on tray icons right there. If you right click an icon it should bring the tray icon options as well. If you close an application that closes to the tray, it should still be in the dash, and you should be able to fully close it there. It just won't work like that.

Their focus there is on gamescope. They got HDR working there nearly 2 years before Plasma had any semblance of support.

x11 or wayland have nothing to do with how good XFCE is you jackass.
>>
>>108589299
And that's the problem. They have so many functions there are more than 2 standards already that all desktops have already replaced with other shit.
>Steam's tray
Background apps + desktop file for the shortcuts that open the library, friends etc
>Discord's tray
Desktop notifications
>Nextcloud's tray
It literally opens a whole window there, just leave it minimized

I just don't think having 2 docks at all times is good and wish I could disable the tray in plasma.
>>
>>108588820
cope, valve considered gnome but decided on kde when they saw how lacking gnome was. its not futureproof. now theyre going to be releasing the steam machine with even more emphasis on desktop mode, powered by kde. of course they developed gamescope. its purpose is to be a micro compositor thats especially good for handhelds. its a controlled environment for running games. that's no mark against kde
system76 and cosmic are irrelevant, literally noone cares.

https://qa.fedoraproject.org/blockerbugs/milestone/44/final/buglist
KDE has been causing issues and delays with almost every new Fedora release since it became an official edition, now 44 which was supposed to release tomorrow will probably release near the end of the month. It's just too big and has too many moving parts. Widespread adoption isn't changing this it just means more overworked maintainers have to put up with its quirks, nothing actually changes with the project in response to how bloated it is.

KDE is great but they need to sit down and figure out how to streamline things. Distros like Fedora have special rules and exceptions for how they package KDE because it needs to updoot constantly.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/KDE/Update_policy
This is why you'll see on /g/ that KDE's biggest supports also use Arch and why OpenSUSSY is one of the only distros that ships KDE as default, when you're spinning that many plates rolling release is the only sane option. GNOME lacks features and is too conservative but one of the big reasons for this is because they actually care enough to say, "No we don't have the manpower so we're not maintaining that feature, if you want it join us and maintain it yourself." Having a billion features comes at a cost.
>>
>>108600110

GNOME is nothing like a Mac OS. Mac OS has a functional taskbar with tray icons desktop icons, widgets, etc...also has a real dock. GNOME has none of that without extensions.

John Carmack, 1999:
>The gnome user environment in Red Hat 6.0 is finally at a level that I consider it a valid alternative to commercial desktop environments. Overall, its still not as smooth, consistant, or complete as windows or the mac, but is does have its strong points, and things seem to be progressing quite rapidly.
This is the exact UI he was talking about.
>>
>>108585743
I've been indictrinated with windows ui design since I was a wee lad and I can't stand the macOS-like design of Gnome so I'm sticking with KDE which feels natural and intuitive to use for me.

The reason why people hate GNOME is because the developers take forever to add nice QOL features that are already present on KDE. There's a certain amount of bureaucratic friction in the GNOME development cycle that people hate, but it tends to produce much better results than just letting people add whatever they like, which is how KDE does it.
GNOME is great for desktop use, it's stable, the included applications are integrated well into the rest of the desktop, and Adwaita is a much better design than Breeze. If you don't like something about GNOME you can download or make your own extension.
Most people end up on GNOME once they grow up and stop ricing.
