i don't really get it, unless the software is actually new/unstable, to me major versions indicate major usage changes (in applications) or API changes (in libraries)
also not a fan of the other extreme, where they just have no major version at all and just keep increasing the minor version indefinitely (like "Chrome 147"). if the version number isn't supposed to convey anything then just use a date for the version number, at least then it has SOME use
