What is your favorite Y2K/Frutiger Aero era piece of tech? Mine is the iMac G4. I never had one, no one that I knew did, but I saw one on display at Bestbuy around 2002. I was around five or six at the time, but it's one of my first memories that I can recall. I thought it looked so cool.Ever since then, I have been hooked on the early 2000's style with transparent tech, strangely beautiful designs, etc.
>>10859378220 years later and it still works.I will be both sad and relieved the day when I can no longer repair it and it finally goes into the trash.
>>108594016I love my Intellimouse. I do not believe they are capable of dying haha. As far as I know, the laser diode is rated for 100,000 hours since it is underpowered and only used for the optical sensor to read.Say four hours max on your computer a day, that is 25,000 days, or nearly 70 years. I know for a fact I do not use mine that often, and when idle it goes into dim mode anyways, so the dim idle hours are probably double that!
>>108593782It might arguably be past the cut-off point for y2k-futurism but for me it's the PSP, it definitely looks y2k-futurism in aesthetic.
>>108596326The future definitely looked bright when I played the psp. Now it's a shit load of fuck
>>108596326PSP is peak.
>>108596341Agreed. I've latched on y2k-futurism lately because it reminds me that technology felt impressively futuristic once and I'm trying to recreate that feel. We're living in 2026, it should feel like it.In the past I'd shill for the Nothing phone company because they seemed to be the only significant company bringing back y2k-esque futuristic design, with its glyph lights and transparent back. But ever since Nothing Phone 3 they got rid of glyphs, and their latest phone (4a pro) doesn't have a transparent back either, so fuck them. Guess I shouldn't be surprised but it's still sad.>>108596363Yup. I remember just how insane it felt to be playing ps1 quality games on a sleek portable when owning a PS1 didn't feel like long ago. Also their PSP booth went hard on y2k-futurism too:https://www.resetera.com/threads/official-sonys-psp-pavilion-at-e3-2005-appreciation-thread.108711/
>>108593782Not a specific piece from that era, but I miss old PC cases being loaded with 5.25" drive bays and all the wacky modules and inserts you could get. Most of them were dog shit, but idk it seems quaint in retrospect. Bit earlier than frutiger aero era though, I guess.I also still like my tower cases to have 5.25" drive bays. I'll give up my disk drive and hotswap bays when I'm dead.
>>108593782A toilet. Where all of it belongs. Curves are feminine, rectilinear is masculine. Most of you are trannies/ faggots. Thats why its called Fruity.
>>108596461Yes, curves are feminine, which makes you a fag if you're not attracted to curves. Luigi Colani was one of the forefathers of y2k-futurism and he was explicit that female bodies were his inspiration.
>>108596625
anything in silver and white
>>108596431The PSP could play actual PS1 games but that's just extra. The selling point is being able to play PS2 quality games.Of course they're handheld games so they match proper PS2 games and the hardware wasn't as powerful either, but it got close.
>>108594016>>108594039My scroll wheel went out. Does anyone have a link to a good replacement for the wheel and decoder?
>>108593782I really wish the mini-disc form factor stuck around and continued to evolve in capability. It seems like the ideal medium for physical music. Not only does it look cool in a y2k-futuristic way but it's also got the practical benefits of being more durable and portable than a CD.
>>108593782Imagine if there was a computer like this but with current technology inside! It would be so based
>>108600187Take it apart and clean it. You most likely have junk stuck against the sensor. Or if you want to just replace the encoder, you can get many on Aliexpress. It's just a normal TTC encoder and easy to find high quality replacements for.https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832723546232.html?src=google&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa
>>108600322A lot of people are replacing the guts with M4 mac mini's. They even make a custom board to for the ports in the rear called the Docklite G4.
>>108600243I agree, without the mini disc, the PSP probably would have never existed. A UMD is just a weird shaped mini disc haha. That, and the do look super cool on display. I need to get a minidisc player so bad.>>108596326Not at all! The skeuomorphic/Frutiger Aero/ Post modern Y2K era ended around 2012 with the release of Windows 8. Even the PS Vita is extremely based off of the popular at the time, Aero design styles. Freom the round button like icons, to the very physical UI, to the very frutiger inspired UI music!I even have this song in my Frutiger Aero playlist for just relaxing at home, even if that sounds pretty cringy lolhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2mvXaqpUxY&list=RDf2mvXaqpUxY&start_radio=1
>>108596326XMB is great. Only issue with it is organization. I wish Sony kept it for the PS4-5 because it's still better than the dogshit UX of PS4-5.
>>108598479PSP was a PSX.5, PSP2 was a PS2.5.
>>108596326>>108596431>>108596913>>108600243I wish I lived in a world where y2k-era Sony became the tech company the industry built from instead of Apple.Imagine:>Mobile computers aim towards a desktop experience (see Sony's UMPCs), rather than desktop experience being dumbed down to make iPad babies happy>Mobile gaming aims towards a console/pc experience (see Sony PSP and Sony Xperia), rather than simplified to the lowest common denominator >No cult of Dieter Rams design principles, tech is encouraged to look boldly futuristic>Minidiscs as the dominant physical medium>Sleek tactile controls still prominent instead of touchscreen everything>Professionals use Vaios instead of MacsDon't get me wrong, I'm not saying Sony were purely benevolent force in tech, I just think on the whole it would have been for the better.
>>108601137The thing is it even if Apple is the industry leader in terms of design, we aren't doing much with it, the digital/internet first infrastructure of everything has annihilated 2000s technology and all we're left with is 7 inch slabphones, laptops, perhaps a smart TV where you don't own the media you consume. AR headsets are too expensive and too useless for them to be the future. the attempt right after covid fucking failed because normalfaggots would rather scroll on their dopamine generator apps on their phones than having it strapped on their heads.
>>108601137world would've been better place if that street shitting currynigger got dysentery and died in india
>>108593782brother, please go cut your penis off somewhere else, my god the gluk gluk gluk on ""frutiger aero"" is insane, why can't you people talk about something else

>>108601137I can imagine the ecosystem lock-in now. >Sony Vaio has its own OS>Pushes MiniDisc and Memory Stick Pro Duo as hard as possible instead of just using CDs and SD cards>Sony Vegas and Sound Forge become industry standard and the full version is only on Vaio OS>Tries to upsell you on bundles that include overpriced Sony speakers and monitors>There's a Sony-only wireless music protocol>Drags their feet on MP3 and Flac support, pushing ATRAC/AAL as their superior replacement>PlayStation crossplay, remote play, cross save and game dev tools only on Vaio OS>Sony Pictures and Sony Music release movies/music/anime on its platform earlier than everywhere elseBut even with all this proprietary bullshit, I’d still take Sony’s smug, overengineered y2k futurist timeline over the sterile Apple-led world we got.
>>108601137>>108603627Where are you getting these images? They're cool as fuck.
Bangs & Olufsen deserves credit for y2k-futurism too. I'm gonna dump some B&O pics.>>108605617I got them here:https://sabukaru.online/articles/its-a-sony-world-asayan-2000-5
>>108596326I recently bought a new battery for my PSP for like 12 euros.Still works no problem. I play SNES and NES games on it.A small glimpse at what tech could've been.

>fruitnigger revisionists just lumping everything from the 2000's into their "aesthetic"so what got slid with this, thats what I want to know. cause this thread is a massive troll
>>108601137I chose a Vaio over the MBP in 2001 and used it til 2011. Just a couple weeks ago I got another 2001 model on eBay. It runs so well with just a factory reset and no internet access. I was able to import an hour of DV video no problem. Now I gotta figure out how to get the 13GB off though
>>108600322
>>108605979OP said "Y2K/Frutiger Aero" so everyone's stuck to Y2k because fruitiger is shit. Don't know why the two are lumped together so much, they're basically opposites:>fruitiger aeroTries to make tech soft, friendly and babyish by looking like like aquariums, candy and rainbows. Same design cues are used for the sensory rooms of autistic children, picrel.>y2k-futurism Tries to make tech look impressively futuristic, even alien rather than accessible and friendly. Metallic, cool tones, colour is used sparingly. Only overlap with fruitiger is both sometimes use rounded shapes and translucency.
>>108606243I consider this y2k-futurism personally
>>108593782>Y2K/Frutiger Aerothose are so distinct in my mindy2k is "future is really cool and full of hi-tech features you can play with, there's no limit to what we can do"frutiger is "hey retards, you're scared of computers? we made them less scary for you fucking morons, bleep bloop here's your welcome screen and colored candy buttons, don't drool all over the place"
>>108606243>y2k-futurism>metallic, cool tones, colour is used sparinglySure thing revisionist zoomie
>There are peasants ITT who call themselves Y2K-chads but don't own KEF Muons designed by Father of Y2k-futurism, Ross LovegroveIt's just under $225k, you're not too poor are you?https://us.kef.com/products/muon
Peak Apple aesthetics. They should have never abandoned this look. It'd be even more perfect now with the Liquid Glass design they're pushing on Mac OS and iOS.
>>108596326I'd definitively say the cutoff point is actually the 2DS, given it was the last holdout of the transparent casing trend which defined early 2000s design.
>>108606494The Switch 1 Pro Controller and the Crystal series DualShock 4s both came with translucent plastic several years after the 2DS. Unfortunately, the Switch 2's Pro Controller ditched the translucency and Sony is doing gradient and iridescent looks instead for the DualSense. It's a shame since that see-through plastic is the definitive aesthetic that screams technology for me.
>>108605763There's something wrong to me about this device being described as "vintage". Heck, it doesn't even look that different from contemporary modernism!
>>108606341That stuff was definitely part of Y2K, but it's flattening era when people act like it was the main look.A lot of the translucent/colourful stuff people post now was mass-market consumer gear, stuff aimed at kids, or just secondary colour variants. It was part of the wider design language, but not really the dominant aspirational tech look. The premium "future is now” side of things was more representative. Smooth shapes, metallic/pearl finishes, cool tones, ambient lights, that kind of thing. Sony, B&O, tech ads, interfaces etc.For the record, it's not a criticism of the look itself, I still think it looks cool, it's just not what defines y2k-futurism imo.
>>108605763>puts the other cd read side down on the table>Zoomers
>>108596431When I played it I played PS2 level games in a handheld the future looked bright as fuck lol Then the internet access and the little discs you umd for movies. I was so hopeful. But instead we got California woke bs buying up Sony and selling only walking sims
