Comsider the following
>>
>>108595870
webp has better quality, smaller file size, better compression, portability, interoperability. it is the format of the future, unc
>>
>>108595870
the file format itself isn't even bad, it's just bad because a lot of applications lack compatibility
>>
>>108595908
It's bad because as per the OP pic, you're being served this shit on a shit plate recompressed from the original files also on the server that it won't let you explicitly ask for. Muh bandwidth.
For thumbnails it's fine, I don't care, but let me get the actual fucking image when I need it.
>>
>>108595939
>recompressed from the original files
webp supports lossless compression though
>Muh bandwidth.
I don't see the issue in a website caring about bandwidth? Smaller file sizes are also generally better for the user and mean quicker load times. And it's not like this concept just goes away if you remove webp - would you rather they just applied low quality lossy compression instead?
>let me get the actual fucking image when I need it
Websites already apply compression to images without webp. You're almost never getting the "actual" image regardless.

hi sundar
>>
png or death
>>
Reminder that any developer who allows a webp to be served with a .png or .jpg extension gets the rope
>>
>>108595870
>url ends in .png
>downloads it
>it saved as .webp
but like why? why would the website do this?

I agree with SpongeBob
Google is ruining image search
BlueSky switched to that awful image file format so the only way to grab an image off BlueSky is to screenshot it
>>
>>108596479
Or the myriad of webp to png converter extensions.
>>
>>108596486
Good idea, I could this, hope it works

i like how jewgle sneakily tried to push/force everyone into webp, but got vibe checked and somehow made people more aware of better formats they were trying to kill.
>>
>>108596479
Wait, they also use webp?? Based BlueSky???

It's wild that people still hate on Webp in 2026. Like I could understand the sentiment in 2020 when most phones could not decode it fast enough which led to lag. Like decoding performance is the real world reason AVIF or JPEG XL will never get widespread adoption anytime soon. They're both excellent image formats compared to Webp but they're not as decode friendly so they might see mass adoption in like 2035 or even 2040.

BUTT for now we can all benefit from Webp, like why wait until 2035/2040 for AVIF/JPEG XL?

This. If I were making a website in 2026, I would convert all my images to webp.

all these upsides yet no real world support
curious

great job, nigger
>>
>>108597359
webp is already deprecated, not worth the privilege of doubt.
>>
>>108597375
The Firefox extension works but the file saved is about twice the file size as the original webp and that is shit tier for a jpg file, I might as well go back to doing a screenshot saved as png
>>
>>108597337
Too much effort.
>>
>>108596124

That's litterally it and i don't give a fuck about anything else.

Maybe if lazy ass software devs made an effort to support webp no one would hate it
No wonder why they're all being replaced by AI, useless fucks
>>

we will talk again in july, tell avif shill.
>>
>>108595870
Is it because 4chan won't let you post a webp and you keep mistakingly saving them to your pc?
>>
>>108599105
No one wants to support webp because it's just not a very good format, but they eventually get pressured into it because Jewgle is trying to ram it down everyone's throats.

>>
>>108604173
It's worse on KDE/other DE's where the file system will let you choose "any type" but will still save in the original format.

I've literally "any" a .webp into a .png, .jpg, et. al. and it'll still be a .webp even with the .png file-extension.
