Any recommendations for simple, lightweight distros (excluding Mint)?I recently got a Thinkpad T470s and am now wondering which distro to install on since windows, what it came with runs like absolute dogpoop.
>>108598967IT really doesnt matter anon just go on distro watch and pick one of the normie ones, probably something debian based if you dont know what youre doing which i assume is true since you're asking
>>108598967There are only 2 distros. Artix and Devuan.
>>108598977I've used arch for quite some time. I just need something non stressful that simply works, also my main problem is that I already have so many ISOs. Maybe I'll just use normal debian since I've seen lots of people use that here.
>>108598980Doesn't Artix have pretty limited repos?
>>108599009Well coming from arch you might be a little disappointed witht he older packages but I've been sticking with debian for like the past decade and a half and they only ever seem to improve it, you can essentially fuck off for a year and not touch your system and it all just works provided you manage to get it setup for your needs at the start.
>>108599019 Sounds pretty much like what I'm looking for. Thanks for that info
>>108599017It works for me. But you can activate Arch repo and AUR too. As long is not systemd dependent, it should work fine.
>>108599055Good to know, thanks
antiX for the 200 MB RAM used with desktop.
>>108598967What do you plan on doing with it? I'd probably go with Arch or Debian or Artix/Devuan if you want to avoid systemd. I'm liking Devuan on my old laptop but I did have some weird issues when installing, so keep that in mind (less testing, might be more sensitive to hardware). Had a nice retro feel out of the box and repos are solid. If you want something really lightweight but still general purpose, Void is a good option. Alpine is good too (but if you use proprietary programs alot it will be annoying).Look up what you want to install / setup. Check if the repos have it. Think about how often you want to update / reboot. Think about which has the vibe you like since that's 90% of decision making.
>>108598967if you want the bleeding edge of arch then arch or cachyosif you want the stability of fedora then fedora or nobara
same question, I've tried Mint and Fedora. Both were full of bugs. I'm only using my PC for games, emulation and to watch series, so I guess I'll stick to windows. I hate it but I'm tired of having to constantly deal with bugs for every little thing I try
>>108599215what kind of bugs? game bugs? display environment bugs? operating system bugs?
>>10859896721H2 LTSC
>>108599228literally all of them. for example my controller would systematically crash parts of the system. Half the time I couldn't manage multi display. Right now the panel constantly freezes whenever I try to move icons or just use them. Even when I'm not actively using the panel it fucking crashes. I updated the system for two weeks now and it doesn't change a thingand my usage is as basic as it gets, I have a gaming pc so it's not a performance issue. I don't want to spend hours trying to fix every little thing
>>108599330silly question, but you're also on a thinkpad like the op right?anyway, i don't think you can get a better experience than something like cachyos/nobara/bazzite with kde, that's about as polished as it getsif those don't work then you might just be cursed
>>108598967Debian
>>108599375no, like I said I'm on a gaming pcand yeah I know I'm cursed, but that doesn't really helpI guess I'll try bazzite next. And if that doesn't work then I'll have to deal with windows the rest of my life
>>108599441you didn't really say that, pc can theoretically refer to a laptop tooi was asking because nvidia, they're the biggest enemy of linux on the planet
>>108599069It's more like 400+mb
>>108599285>2015 LTSB NFixed it for you
>>108598967Manjaro.
>>108598967Any preexisting Linux experience?
>>108599454I run a full amd desktop
If you don't really use Linux already, I recommend doing a deep dive if you're able. Gentoo or Arch. Maybe FreeBSD like I did if you're willing to look outside the Linux ecosystem and do without shit like Steam because it's stable as shit and has a Handbook that will walk you through everything you could possibly want to do.After rocking one of those for several months, then I'd take a look at more conventional systems like Debian or Fedora (assuming, of course, that what you started with isn't doing it for you - it very well might). You'll understand things a lot better and, when problems arise, if you don't quite know how to fix them you'll at least know where to look.
>>108598967None, it has mossad/kike fingers all over it, if you can afford laptop order chink huawei matebook with kirin cpu and harmonyOS.
>>108599330Never had any of that on Mint.PopOS pre-cosmic was buggy, however.
>>108598967Picrel is KING! Unline Lunix it makes all features of your Thinkpad actually usable.
>>108598967>excluding MintThe correct answer is Mint so unless you can explain yourself you are a dumbass and I won't help you
>>108599228I'm on Kubuntu 25.10 and Firefox crashes daily. Haven't had a Firefox crash on Windows in years.I assume it's due to snaps but I can't be bothered to cross compare different builds. I'm just praying 26.04 fixes it.
>>108599695like anon said, I'm cursed. Mint was THE obvious choice for someone like me who wanted to keep it simpleI'll just give up linux at that point
>>108598967I'm using a T470s and running Fedora Kinoite after my old KDE Neon install explodedit works pretty well but I don't use it for development because I have my desktop for thatalso you have to make sure you install the flathub version of any media software due to fedora's repos not including any popular codecs for legal reasons

>>108598980This.
>>108599440Devuan
>>108598967Gentoo, Void, Devuan, or ArtixAlpine is deeply political but it used to be an option.

>>108598967If you hate distrohopping then GNU Guix. With anything else you're going to be constantly hopping between distros because nothing else really works reliably for years.
>>108599009Debian might have a couple quirks to work out on the first install, but once you have it all set it up you can just never update and things will always just work. It's beautiful.
>>108599529Well as I said, I did use arch, Fedora and Mint for some time
>>108599741Do you have screens with different refresh rates? This causes issues with X11, in that case you would have to use Wayland so try something with a KDE Plasma desktop environment (Gnome is shit). As far as I know this is the only usecase where Mint might have issues. It truly is the most easy and seamless and trouble free computing experience I have ever had, and any time I heard of anyone having trouble with it the only reason was they were expecting it to run windows software with zero setup and other absolutely braindead levels of retardation like that. I'm sorry for your difficulties.
>>108598980This is the correct answer. You may have heard of other "distros" such as Debian, Arch, Ubuntu, Fedora, Cachy, Nix and similar. Those are merely flavors of Microsoft Windows with a different theme.
>>108598967cachyos
>>108602207Yeah get with the times, it's 2026 and it is now cool to be tracked and spied on like cattle.

>>108598980I don't remember posting this. dinit is great
>>108599706>so unless you can explain yourselfsystemdrepos get hacked every other year
Ubuntu is a pile of cow dung, Canonical? more like Cancomical
>>108604901>repos get hacked every other yearAnd it all started *immediately* after the the project leader said he did not want any contributions from Israel, be it money or code donations. Mint is practically already dead as a project, the guy should have just started over after that. Maybe he is waiting for Israel to die first? I dunno but I think he would have gotten further by now if he had simply started another project while hiding his involvement in it.
>>108603332>nothing else really works reliably for yearsInstall Gentoo.
>>108598967Just installed endeavor on a laptop with an 8th gen i5 and 8 gb of ram. Rund good and feels snappy.
>>108606809>endeavorRedundant, unnecessary distro- just like Manjaro. No need for them to exist now that Arch is easy to install.
I use fedora, it's OK.
>>108598967>lightweight distrosTry Linux Lite, MX Linux, or Q4OS.
>>108605307>Maybe he is waiting for Israel to die first?Aren't we all?
>>108606187>bleeding edge>reliablepick one and only one
>>108607018>MX LinuxProbably the best Debian-based distro out there, now that Mint has issues. I use an Arch-based distro now but it's what I'd recommend to anyone looking for a begginer-friendly distro.
