this is worse than video stores imo as while sure you can watch more stuff for the money, with a video store you at least get no ads (well unless it's a dvd/bluray with unskippable intro sections i guess, but at least even those are impersonal and never interrupt the feature), can choose anything you want from a single pool, was always the best quality (arguably you could point out worn out video tapes, but any reputable video store would swap out unacceptably worn tapes)

people got hooked into streaming back when it was basically just netflix. everything in one place, cheap and no ads, of course people jumped on it. now people are often getting a handful of services because shows are all spread out, paying more each because they're pushing ad-free and high quality into more costly plans, making streaming worse over time

meanwhile piracy, well that's just been getting better. not only does it get better as people get faster and less limited internet connections, but the tooling for obtaining and managing pirated media has gotten better over time as well. say 20 years ago pirating something for me was mainly renting a dvd, copying it, recompressing it to dvd5 and burning it, because downloading a movie on dial up took a WEEK. which i did still do sometimes, namely if i wanted to watch one before it became available in my country/video store. these days i type the name of a movie into radarr and it will go find a torrent for me, throw it to transmission, move and rename it when it's done and let jellyfin know it's there. after some minutes it will just be there ready to play on any tv or computer in the house no different to a streaming service, only free, ad-free, and even better quality

All true. In my experience, only Comcast has cared at all about piracy. I got a notice once with Verizon telling me they told some copyright holder to fuck off, but would have to give them my info if subpoenaed. AT&T fiber didn't care at all for the year I used it.
