Ok bros, I need to have a new Laptop by Monday for my new job. Job details: Mostly browser based. Will need to run lots of browser tabs simultaneously with Slack always running. Not very demanding. However, am expected to perform light dev work/vibe coding. Considerations:I live in SEA. Therefore:>Options are limited>Computers are a bit more expensive>Used market is shit. Full of scammers.>Power goes out a lot. Need a device with a great battery that can handle a full 8-10 hour day on a single charge.>Needs to be mobile. Desktop is not an option Other considetations>I produce music so having either an AMD chip or a Mac M-chip is preferred>Will have lots of static windows running for several hours so want an IPS screen. OLED is not desirable. So far, I have it down to 3 options1. Macbook Air M5 | 24GB | 1TB | 15" ($2000)Pros:- best battery- oled screen- more than powerful enough for usecase- premium build qualityCons:- non repairable- Mac, so most of my VSTs will not work- look like a faggot when using it2. HP Omnibook Aero 7 | 32GB | 1TB | AMD Ryzen Ai7-350 | 13" ($1500)Pros:- more powerful- more repairable- will be able to run most of my music softareCons- small battery- poor build quality- only 13" screen, may be hard to work solo from that deviceLenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 16 | 32GB | 1TB | AMD Ryzen AI 7 445 | 16" ($1100)Pros- more powerful than Mac, less powerful than Omnibook- 32GB ram, lots of headroom- better battery than Omnibook- more repairable- biggest screen- cheapest laptop out of all, can use the extra $1000 to buy a new bed.Cons- OLED screen. Will likely have burn in after a few years from all the static windows I will need to run- less battery life than Macbook- slightly shitty build qualityI'm really on the fence here. I would go with the Ideapad if it had an IPS panel. Ive had an OLED before, and it did get mild burn in after a while that really bugged me.What would YOU go with and why?
>>108616118This is exactly the type of post I was hoping to get. Pure, unfiltered, highly factual truth posting.Fren, you have convinced me to get the Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5. If you have any more Apple facts, please go off some more. Thanks for straightening me out here
>>108616218If you are not joking that anon is the local apple hater; from his outdated talking points you instantly understand he has never tried an M-chip based Apple device due to lack of expendable income or backwardness, or simply desire to troll and garner attention. The embodiment of bitterness.Get a macbook if you are familiar with UNIX systems and if it supports the software you use. MacOS is highly specialized in the music production line of business so you won't find any frictions in your daily job
>>108616218>This is exactly the type of post I was hoping to get. Pure, unfiltered, highly factual truth posting.Bruh, that's a bot that has been reposting the same reply for years.https://desuarchive.org/g/search/text/%22when%20the%20SSD%20dies%20it%20bricks%22/Still, I wouldn't recommend a MBA if you live in a place with hot climate. MBAs don't have fans, they disipate heat through the case like phones, so if you're doing heavy tasks at 30°C the chip will throttle to keep a low temperature after 10 minutes of heavy use (which means that tasks will take longer to finish). The M chips have dedicated engines for audio, so the loss of performance under heavy loads may be low in reality, however. The other brands in your list are bad too, at least under my experience. HP laptops overheat even when you're doing fuckall and Lenovo laptops tend to have horrible plastic cases, shit screens and poor battery life. Not to mention that Windows 11 is the most horrible piece of software currently in the market that requiresa lot of tweaks just to make you hate it a bit less and that most brands include additional bloatware/spyware that you need to purge.Honestly I'd go for a mac only after confirming that the software you use works in macOS. Otherwise, I'd go for a laptop from a brand that isn't HP or Lenovo.
maybe tell your job to give you a laptop so you can do your work on it. thats how it usually goes. why the hell are you spending personal money to get work donei cant imagine any remote job that requires you to do everything on your personal machine being a good job long term
>>108616607Because I can live like a king in SEA. I had a wagie job in the US. Made over $90K a year and could barely afford a 1 bedroom apartment, car payment, bills, etc. This job lets me work from literally anywhere in the world and pays enough to live like Andrew Tate in SEA.
>>108616648so what youre saying is you had no friends, social life, nor love life, or anything of value in the US, which allowed you to go all the way to another country where you will always be an outsider and psychologically deteriorate over time because it's proven that youre supposed to stay in the culture you come up in. and now youre working some jeet it job where you have to buy your own laptopliving like a king!
>>108615790>>108616648Get 14” M5 32GB Macbook Pro (USD2099) instead. Maybe add Apple Care. If you need to do dev stuff Macbook Pro is basically a requirement
>>108616760^ Pro always And the fan doesn't run loud eitherI love my little 13" MBP M1it's a beast, small like a notesbook and comfy as fuck to code in it
>>108615790Lelnovo Is better than both at the same budgetI don't trust in slim things though and...i never had problems with my bed
>>108616534>>108616588Id go for the mac but its 2x more expensive and not repairable. Also I have lots of VSTs that I already own and would lose like half of them switching to MacOS. The Mac battery life is tempting. But the non repairable aspects are a huge turnoff for me. If the battery, SSD, screen, and Ram were user swappable id get it but I just cant give my money to a company that creates disposable shit.>>108616670>so what you're saying isKek you are so triggered. You sound jealous. I arbitraged my lifestyle and am now living a much much higher quality of life and saving/investing at a faster rate. I have a 2 story townhouse vs a single bedroom apartment. Havent seen a nigger for months. Food is cheap. Etc. When you hit 30, all your friends get married or move away. Also imagine prioritizing friends over retiring early and financial independence. You are a jealous little fag.
>>108616760Will dual boot arch linux. The processor and 32gb eam will be fine for my projects.>>108616827If we had a good used market for macs here, i may have gotten a used M2-M3 but in SEA the used market is shit and shady.>>108616844Id prefer a ThinkPad instead but the options are slim here. Im doing some last minute sesrching for a Thinkpad T14 Gen 6
>>108616919>Will dual boot arch linuxYou can't really run linux in ARM macs outside a VM since there aren't working drivers for most of the hardware (because the architecture isn't documented).
>>108616971Oh yeah going with the Lenovo. Should be x86 architecture
>>108616912>Kek you are so triggered. You sound jealous.yes im so jealous to have ended up with a better life than you financially and socially in the country and culture i came from. it's proven that right now your mind is physically deteroriating, losing gray matter volumeKEK sucks to be you
>>108617020You sound mentally ill and like you are coping and seething. Really hope life gets better for you.. Maybe you should exercise more.
>>108616118Based desu
>>108615790>macbook>best batteryare you from 2019?
>>108617086Whats better? Genuinely curious. Last time I checked the AMD Strix Halo chip was comparable. I looked for one and couldnt find one. I really hate computer shopping. My last PC was a 2070 S with 16gb ram ans a Ryzen 3600. Used it for 6 years and eventually gave it away. Im not the type of dude to upgrade constantly.
Lenovo T14 AMD gen 2 or newer. >good battery life>pretty repairable>upgrade ram (one slot)>older gens can be bought used>will run your VSTs>probably IPS since base models are most commoneven if you buy used from out of country and pay import duties, it may still be cheaper. if your power goes out often, also invest in a power bank that can charge laptops. my power is out all the time and i have one that can be charge solar or by plugging to the wall.
>>108617086Windows' power management is still AIDS. It doesn't matter if Intel and AMD become more power efficient because Windows always finds a way to waste battery. Also the loss of performance on Windows when it's low on battery is notsbly worse than in macOS (both when the device has little battery and when the chip is overheating).
>>108617114Im shopping around for a last minute Thinkpad now but I'm not seeing many viable options. Most are Intel or cost $500-$1000 more to get the same or worse spec (maybe with a slightly better processor) but I genuinely don't need a more powerful processor. On my old 3600 I used to run massive daw sessions with dozens of VSTs and never once got bottlenecked by the CPU.>>108617128Im thinking of wiping Windows 11 and putting on Windows 10 LTSC. Is this a fantasy? Are there caveats I'm not aware of? I also want to add an additional SSD and dual boot Linux. Likely Arch so I can fuck with Proton and learn Linux in general.
>>108616670lmao meds
>>108616670>friendsThey're all fake in modern society
>>108617196>Im thinking of wiping Windows 11 and putting on Windows 10 LTSC. Is this a fantasy? Are there caveats I'm not aware of?If the hardware is too new (W10 IOT LTSC was released in 2021) it may not have optimized drivers available, leaving you with the generic drivers that work but obviously perform a bit worse. W11 has LTSC versions too with more up-to-date stuff, but even if it lacks most of the bloat and adware of regular W11 you still have the ugly UI that can't be customized without 3rd party tools.
>>108615790I have a brand new M5Pro 14" and a few year-old Thinkpad X13 with Linux. I bought both new so I don't know about used prices. The Mac was more than twice the price that I paid for the Thinkpad.I would go with a Mac if you (a) need it for Mac specific software compatibility, (b) need to have good quality built-in webcam+microphone for web meetings. As far as I'm concerned in all other respects I prefer my Thinkpad with Linux. MacOS is actually pretty dogshit both in terms of the shocking lack of third-party software, but also the shocking deficiencies with Apple software that has been unaddressed for years. Yes the Mac has better battery, but a modern Lenovo will be good enough and if I was really worried about job-dependent battery life I would just keep a secondary powerbank charged for the rare day that it is needed.
if you want a nice screen that is not OLED get one of the Mini-LED macbooks
>>108615790Stop deluding yourself and just go with the M5 Macbook Air.
Laptops are basically toys, so it doesn't matter what you choose, but make your employer buy the most expensive one
>>108617043yeah im coping and seething that im in my home country and have people who want me here... lolif you actually exercised maybe you wouldve gotten a social and romantic life and not needed to flee the country like a loser

>>108615790Mac because I’m always pleasantly surprised when programmer tools work on Windows
>>108615790I might be biased since I like UNIX-like operating systems, and I do have a FagBook Pro, but I'd recommend getting a MacBook Pro (or air even), IF you plan to do music production. I've had a better experience with Apple's CoreAudio than the ASIO drivers on Windows. Usually your VSTs will also have a AU download option. If you are pirating, you must get the AU versions of plugins. VST does work, but i've had a pretty unstable experience with them. On MacOS you can't run older plugins that are 32 bit, so older plugins will not work. Make sure you get the plugins for Apple Silicon.>However, am expected to perform light dev work/vibe coding. If you are doing ANY dev work, you should pick a UNIX-like environment. If you plan to go with options 2 and 3, install an operating system that's based on Linux (or even freeBSD if you want a crazy adventure). Avoid Windoze for dev work at all costs. However do be warned that the audio production scene on Linux is still growing, so there might be some growth pains or incompatibilities with your DAW and plugins of choice. Usually you *could* get away with dual booting Windows and Linux, but I'd rather not touch Windoze ever again.
>>108615790Bite the bullet and buy/steal compatable VSTs to macos. It's way better with audio latency stuff, and performance to battery life is unmatched. The only thing if you gonna spend arund $2k go for the PRO and buy as much RAM as you can. Air is great for taking it around the city. If you gonna be at home there is no point of having a weightless laptop with no cooling.
>>108615790>Pros:>- oled screen>Cons>- OLED screen.so oled is only a pro when apple does it? also that apple product does not have an oled screen
>>108620657quiet goy, you cant just expose the lowest grade jeet garbage on the market like that
>>108615790ideapad slim, kek anon please don't do this to yourself. Can't you at least pick a Lenovo Yoga/Thinkpad please?Dell Lattitude/XPS/"Pro Premium"?Anon don't get the IdeaShitter, get the Yoga/ThinkPad at least.
>>108615790I hate those gay rounded corners so much.
>>108620408The fact you are lashing out so hard indicates that, yes: you ARE coping and seething. I don't give a fuck about you but you seem terminally triggered that I did something you will never be brave enough to do.
>>108620657Was a typo. Wanted an IPS screen UPDATEgot the Ideapad Slim 5.Reasoning:>Thinkpad equivalents are $600-$1000 more for roughly the same specs>can mitigate screen burn by plugging into a monitor 99% of the time and turning off screen>has an expandable SSD slot and I already have 2 SSDs on standby. Tonight will load Arch Linux on it and dual boot Arch for dev work>battery and screen are user repairable>was able to test the device in the store, one of the laptops had dead pixels. Found one with a working new panel. Worried that, if I buy a thinkpad, itll have dead pixels and exchanging can take weeks (we dont have Amazon level service out here)>can use the extra $1000 I saved to start building a desktop PCThanks for everyones input. More than anyone, thank you Mac Schizo for reminding me how gay and jewish Apple is.
