Steam and Proton are part of it but I think a lot of credit is due to the decades of open source development that has slowly but steadily improved Linux as a desktop OS. If Linux as a whole was just as unwieldy today as it was 15 years ago even Steam wouldn't save it.

15 years ago the Linux memes about no drivers, no sound, no WIFI, no software etc were all true. In the old days when you put a CD in your CD drive you had to CLI some shit to mount the CD so you could use it. Audio never worked out of the box. Now when I install Linux everything just works, even on "outdated" stable distros like Debian, and that includes audio IO, WIFI, Bluetooth, and plug-and-play stuff like DVDs, USB drives, mice, keyboards, video game controllers, webcams, etc.

Additionally, a lot of old free software options that started off buggy or feature poor has now matured (for every day stuff like image manipulation, PDFs, audio, video, etc). Overall Linux has a more complete software suite than MacOS, and couple all of that with Linux being able to play 90% of Windows games and you have very little reason to use a paid OS.
