>holy shit
>think, "wow in the future we wont even need computers or laptops. We could just go to a desktop mode on our phones and use kmb"
>2 decades later
>still no phones with a feature complete desktop mode

Its insane that this still isnt being done. The macbook neo proves its possible. They just wont do it. Neither will Android.

Loads of phones have a desktop mode, samsung dex and motorola ready for are two off the top of my head. I think it's even become bundled with stock android now.

Literally take your Android phone and plug it into your laptop's docking station right now.

The real problem is nobody but us ever wanted it, especially Gen Z and Alpha. They can't comprehend desktops. They are proficient at tip tapping their way through everything and they don't know any better and don't have the brain capacity to learn.

Your 9th-grade dream is still not fully here.

Apple: MacBook Neo proves A18 Pro chip runs full macOS fine. No desktop mode on iPhone (or proper one on iPad — just improved Stage Manager). They won't cannibalize Mac/iPad sales.
Samsung DeX (Galaxy S26): Closest to real. Taskbar, keyboard shortcuts, up to 4 virtual desktops (20 apps), wireless/wired to monitor/TV. Many ditch laptops for light work. Best option today.
Google Android 16 Desktop Mode (Pixel 8+): Now live (March 2026). Resizable windows + taskbar via USB-C. Solid base but rougher than DeX — scaling issues, fewer features.

Why not complete? Business (no laptop killing), mobile apps not desktop-optimized, fragmentation.
DeX wins for now. One-device future delayed by incentives, not tech.

Your vision is closer but not complete.

Apple: MacBook Neo ($599, A18 Pro chip + full macOS Tahoe) proves iPhone-level hardware runs real desktop OS perfectly. Still no desktop mode on iPhone/iPad (only better Stage Manager + iPhone Mirroring to Mac). Apple won't cannibalize Mac/iPad lines.
Samsung DeX (Galaxy S26 series, One UI 8.5): Best right now. Taskbar, strong keyboard shortcuts (Alt+Tab, Win+Tab), up to 4 virtual desktops (5 apps each = 20 total), wireless (Miracast/Smart TV/Monitor) or wired. Phone screen stays independent. Handles multitasking smoothly thanks to Snapdragon 8 Elite. Many users skip laptops for light work. Limitations: mobile app scaling, some wireless lag reports.
Google Android 16 Desktop Mode (Pixel 8+ via March 2026 QPR3): Live & stable. Free-form resizable windows, taskbar, multi-monitor. Requires USB-C DisplayPort + Bluetooth KB/mouse. Rougher edges (scaling issues on some displays, fewer polish/features). Google building foundation for bigger future (possible Aluminium OS/ChromeOS merger). DeX still wins on refinement and ease.

Why not fully done? Business incentives, mobile-first apps, ecosystem fragmentation. Tech ready since years ago.
DeX remains closest to your 9th-grade dream. Google catching up fast. Apple proving the hardware case but refusing the feature. One-device future delayed, not dead.

They just need to do this but with laptop shell (not this useless tablet) and proper desktop environment like Windows or Linux or whatever. The main thing that would need some adapting is for browser tabs between mobile and desktop mode, the main phone/messaging apps could be accessible through an android emulator in the worst case, though a more native implementation would of course be nicer. But the point is that all your tabs and messages are all accessible on one device in a mobile and desktop form-factor depending on whether you are on the move or on site.

>make small open-source libraries in spare time
>notice one of them gets a ton of downloads all of the sudden
>look into it
>a support library for some commercial software uses it as dependency
>thousands of stars on github, 50+ maintainers
>look what is that commercial software
>weird - never heard of it - let me google it
>no one in the real world uses it, barely anyone talks about it besides a few obvious shill posts

Is most of the western economy total bullshit?
Ghost businesses getting money from god knows where making "products" serving no purpose whatsoever?
