You need to weigh some pros and cons to particular distros and put some time into maintenance to get something that just werks, but you would need to do the same on Windows and Mac, most people just pick versions of Mac and Windows that they don't actually like (last good Windows was 24 years ago) and they defer maintenance until the point of failure or ignore maintenance when they do because "it's different".

Windows does it because it's a poorly designed OS built on top of decades of spaghetti code and neglects support for anything that's not giving a manager more clout, Mac does it because it's designed to interface with student license monopolyware like photoshop that teaches you a garbage workflow intended to make you annoying to work with for anyone not in your particular enterprise clique, just like the product ecosystem itself.
Linux has some up-front time spent learning, but after that your time is spent much more optimally, either because you can automate things trivially in the default workflow without needing to learn something new like you would on Windows or Mac (Powershell, Cygwin, etc.) or because someone else didn't want to waste their time on something and made software that will also save you time.
