just find rebranded dahua/hikvision dome cameras on Amazon. They are roughly $165 a piece. And then set up a nas for storage and frigate for processing

Oh and make sure you update the firmware and block the cameras from accessing the Internet with strict firewall rules. Only allow the frigate box to access the Internet.

Installing the open source firmware is easy as pie. Frigates documentation is also easy. If you have newer hardware, just use openvino for detection instead of buying a coral. You'll take less than an hour.

The night vision is solid if there is some ambient light (though there is noise), but if it's pitch black you'll likely need an ir illuminator (atleast from what I read). Frigate is nice too since I can access it on my LAN and it has a good web UI + you can set up continuous streaming + detection where it shows if a person showed up + percentage of it being a human. Overall, I've been happy with it so far. Again the only real issue I've had is trying to mount it, right now I have a very hacky solution.
I have a reolink, I blocked it from phoning home in my router settings and I connect to it through my home VPN. No cloud or subscription required. My only gripe is that I have to use their app because I couldn't integrate it with home assistant. But that isn't much of an issue. It's motion activated, you can control sensitivity for motion, human detection and animal detection separately and configure the detection area and range. It seems to work pretty well. It records to a microSD and auto deletes old footage when it's full. You can also play back footage through the app.100% non-regretted purchase.

>>108660129Indeed, Reolink. while not perfect, is the best off the shelf solution for having features, no subscription, and being only local(mostly). Maybe its model dependent but I could access my Reolink doorbell in Home Assistant at least I think I remember being able to. I ended up taking down my Home Assistant system for now, as I didnt have the time to really get it going.

I thought about buying some but like you I didn't want to be tied to some service so 'webhook' was the ideal solution but it turns out very few of their models support such a simple feature.

>>108659134Go for PoE cameras if you can and where possible.Even the cheap reolink cameras have decent daytime footage, but their motion detection works by watching changes in the video frames, and sucks.Wireless cameras need their batteries changed every ~2 years, which is fine with 1 or 2, but the more you get, the more of a pain it is to maintain.
>>108661456this seems to be true. you can have video evidence of someone stealing your packages every single day, and cops wont do shit unless your connected, depending on where you live. if you were to use mild physical force on someone stealing your packages, they would actually take legal action against you.it would be interesting to know the amount of times its been used against the home owner vs the amount of times its been used for the home owner in terms of legal action. the other uses are just dragnet surveillance which is probably 99.99% of the use.
