I've noticed there's not much info either on the Wiki or I've seen it rarely discussed here, but what are your thoughts/tips/knowledge on home security systems?

>brands/systems to avoid
>your experience/set ups
>what works best for you

I was looking to set up a system in my home but I don't even know what to start as you either can have:

>good storage
>motion detection
>24/7 streaming from anywhere
>good quality video
>wireless or cable powered but wifi connected
>not tied to subscription services

Usually you can't find one with all these options unless you create a monster yourself, so what is the best out there?

Small Rasbperry Pi camera + Frigate running from docker = g2g

Isn't the picture quality on those cameras kinda scuffed? What about night vision?

just find rebranded dahua/hikvision dome cameras on Amazon. They are roughly $165 a piece. And then set up a nas for storage and frigate for processing
>>

outdoor night video with low light usually translates to terrible low quality/noise
>>
Oh and make sure you update the firmware and block the cameras from accessing the Internet with strict firewall rules. Only allow the frigate box to access the Internet.

intel nuc+frigate+coral+wyze cam v3 flashed with thingino firmware is all you need.
>>
>>108659414
how many hours would I need to allocate to finish such project (once having all parts acquired) with setup + testing?
>>
>>108659481
Less than an hour.
>flash camera with sd card
>wait 3 minutes
>connect to camera and setup
>change audio codec to opus in webui for webrtc features like 2 way audio
>setup docker image for coral+hardware acceleration
>setup frigate config
> docker compose up -d
That's it. Installing the open source firmware is easy as pie. Frigates documentation is also easy. If you have newer hardware, just use openvino for detection instead of buying a coral. You'll take less than an hour.

The quality is pretty decent. I'd post a pic, but I don't want to dox myself. The night vision is solid if there is some ambient light (though there is noise), but if it's pitch black you'll likely need an ir illuminator (atleast from what I read). Frigate is nice too since I can access it on my LAN and it has a good web UI + you can set up continuous streaming + detection where it shows if a person showed up + percentage of it being a human. Overall, I've been happy with it so far. Again the only real issue I've had is trying to mount it, right now I have a very hacky solution.

I have a reolink, I blocked it from phoning home in my router settings and I connect to it through my home VPN. No cloud or subscription required. My only gripe is that I have to use their app because I couldn't integrate it with home assistant. But that isn't much of an issue. It's motion activated, you can control sensitivity for motion, human detection and animal detection separately and configure the detection area and range. It seems to work pretty well. It records to a microSD and auto deletes old footage when it's full. You can also play back footage through the app.
100% non-regretted purchase.

any way to automate this? maybe motion sensors + some motor to click the trigger?
>>
>>108660129
Indeed, Reolink. while not perfect, is the best off the shelf solution for having features, no subscription, and being only local(mostly). Maybe its model dependent but I could access my Reolink doorbell in Home Assistant at least I think I remember being able to. I ended up taking down my Home Assistant system for now, as I didnt have the time to really get it going.

I thought about buying some but like you I didn't want to be tied to some service so 'webhook' was the ideal solution but it turns out very few of their models support such a simple feature.

so, realistically, one afternoon

Bump since I'm interested in this topic

Same experience. Solid device but really annoyed that it only works with their software.
>>
home security is bullshit and only beneficial for insurers and police, mostly to DENY your otherwise valid claims or to PROVE YOUR GUILT
your cameras produce evidence and once a motion to compel has been granted, its no longer yours
insurance companies are notorious for sending out requests for production en masse

but if you REALLY want to know
>brands/systems to avoid
any chink brand, whether hikvision, dahua, eufy or tp stink
>your experience/set ups
my experience tells me that cameras have never prevented a death ever
>what works best for you
12 gauge
>>
>>108661456
this is true, also keep in mind people have been convicted for turning cameras off before a home invasion

its just snitching on yourself
>>
>>108659134
Go for PoE cameras if you can and where possible.
Even the cheap reolink cameras have decent daytime footage, but their motion detection works by watching changes in the video frames, and sucks.
Wireless cameras need their batteries changed every ~2 years, which is fine with 1 or 2, but the more you get, the more of a pain it is to maintain.
>>
>>108661456
this seems to be true. you can have video evidence of someone stealing your packages every single day, and cops wont do shit unless your connected, depending on where you live. if you were to use mild physical force on someone stealing your packages, they would actually take legal action against you.

it would be interesting to know the amount of times its been used against the home owner vs the amount of times its been used for the home owner in terms of legal action. the other uses are just dragnet surveillance which is probably 99.99% of the use.
