>immutable root filesystem>all modifications are wiped upon updateFor a company that's supposedly all about linux, radical user freedom and being the very best service provider they're suprisingly closed in this department.
>>108659351it's a game console first
Immutable root is the only way to prevent retarded users and retarded software developers from making a device unusable
>>108659351Valve is performative companyThey can't make new gamesThey can't innovate All they have is legacy fameThey have Linux fans, because valve develops kernel for gaymingJust reminder YOU DO NOT OWN YOUR STEAM GAMES.Gaben will buy another gay boat.
>>108659351>For a company that's supposedly all about linux, radical user freedomWhere does Valve say they are any of those things?
>>108659445>They can't make new gamesNew game Deadlock is in closed balpha testing.
>>108659445>YOU DO NOT OWN YOUR STEAM GAMESI only play multiplayer games so I never owned them anyway. If it's not Valve then it's the game company than can ban you. But if that would ever happen (it hasn't) then I would just move on to a different game. My friends would even follow me because we play together, so by banning me they would probably lose several customers.
>>108659362I'm trying to use an xbox one controller with it. I know it's proprietary and that's why it's going to suck, but controller support should be primordial for a console. How about the steam machine? What's going to happen when it comes out?Guess I'm picking up that Steam Controller 2.
>>108659351I use cachyos handheld on my rog ally x it works really well, feels the same as steamos but its not cucked
>>108659351I personally don't care, but I think this is good, because people would brick their system. There is a reason why Android has root disabled and MacOS is mostly read only for system files.Like it or not... but the majority of ""serious"" Linux companies are going ""immutable/atomic"">Fedora Atomic>openSUSE MicroOS>Ubuntu Core>SteamOS>Manjaro Immutable>Clear Linux (intel)I think that's fine for 90% of the users, because most of their stuff is available as Flatpak.
>>108659351Just install CachyOS handheldSure you'll get a glitchy game mode but you'll have whatever freedom you're looking for
Its a purpose built system to keep the user from fucking things up in an unfixable way. You COULD change things around (up to and including a new OS be it another Linux distro or Windows) but for most people using it as gaming handheld or even as a Linux PC will never need to do so. You can very easily open up Desktop Mode and save shit in the proper user directory and nothing goes away. The OS is designed for a particular purpose; its not antithetical to 'freedom' no more than how something like TrueNAS is designed to most easily mesh with ZFS in the storage shares and has defaults to enable Samba, NFS if you wish to toggle them on - its designed for a certain use case as well.
>>108659572>some people are retarded therefore we must treat everyone as retardsmost retarded mindset ever, as if we havent functioned just fine for decades letting people have complete control of their systems. you will never learn anything if you never make a mistake
>>108659351it's a regular x86 pc, no one is forcing you to use the preinstalled operating system
>>108659351Install a different distro then, steamos is designed for steam not desktop use
>>108659351its an operating system designed to play games not to fuck with the filesystemif you wanna fuck with the files you can just install arch/cachy on it
>>108659589>Sure you'll get a glitchy game modeGamescope session works just fine on my SD powered by CachyOS Handheld though
>>108659664Not for me, on my deck just a month ago I had to go back to SteamOS on my deck because it would get a lot of random artifacts on gamescope and sometimes I would have to put the console to sleep and back because the buttons would no longer work otherwise (only the touchscreen). It was buggy as fuck.
I get 6 hours of gametime playing PSO on the ephinea server using my rog ally with cachyos handheld I just felt like posting this video so I needed to say something with my post
>>108659628You can still use ""normal"" distros, my nigga. Don't streSS. It's just to protect people with 2 less IQ points than you.
>>108659523no retard. when valve bans you, you lose access to thousands of dollars worth of video games you already bought, it's not even remotely close to getting banned from a multiplayer game
>>108659393>Firearm ban is the only way to prevent citizens from rising up against the systemSee what I'm doing?
>>108659958>a company choosing to make their product retard-proof is the same as a firearms banok retard, looks like you're the target audience for immutable distros
>>108659351Because they have to keep in mind the average retard that picks up the device is going to bitch and moan when they run random scripts they get off the Internet and turn their Steam Deck into an expensive paperweight.
>>108659937and when does Valve just remove people's accounts? no amount of shitposting has gotten me or my friends in trouble
>>108659351There's no reason why you'd need to modify your root file system. If you want that you can always use Fedora's Atomic distros.>>108659482Deadlock is shit and so was every single Valve game ever made, especially in the past 15 years. The only good games they have are outsourced (Portal).
>>108659351>he doesn't know how to modify "immutable" systems
>buy toy>uhhhhhh why is it a toy
>use an OS>uhhhhh why is it not IDENTICAL do this other OS?
>>108659351Valve is pushing Linux adoption to reduce their exposure/reliance on the Windows ecosystem. It's not about "radical user freedom", it's about preserving the bottom line of their Steam storefront. They're running a very profitable business, and they want to keep it that way.
Bait thread obviously, but if you wanted to "modify" steam OS you would just install a different distro. It's super easy. It's like buying pizza and being upset you didn't get a hamburger (food analogy roflmao)
>>108659351Really curious how they managed to turn Arch into an immutable system. Are they using btrfs and shuffling around subvolumes?
>>108659351So package your software so you can persist it? Pretty sure all the redhat immutable distros have rpm-ostree for this use-case.
>>108659351Just install another distro?
>>108659351you don't like it you overwrite it with something you likevalve explicitly encourages doing whatever the fuck you wantyou're not the target audience of steamos and that's ok
>>108659351You would have a point if you couldn't just install whatever shit you wanted on the thing, even Haiku. What a pointless thread.
>>108659351If the community was smart, they'd package their modifications as ansible playbooks or something so they can easily be reapplied. Fully leaning into the immutable lifestyle. But no. Unlock filesystem, make imperative changes, re-lock, seethe every upgrade.
>>108661977wrong food analogyit's more like being upset that the food in the supermarket doesn't have a high scoville level sauce preapplied to it
>>108659351They want an easy way to fix the retards tinkering with their devices and then crying to customer support.
>>108659937>when valve bans you, you lose access to thousands of dollars worth of video games you already boughtMy friend's account got banned because he told his bank to reverse the charges from steam and he can still log in and play the games he had.
>>108659351>buying anything from valvesteamtards ruined pc gaming by riding that obese retard's dick so hard. i bought a switch and never looked back. fucking retards are still sucking that fat pig's tits for rancid jew milk even after he fucked them and the devs so many times. shameless vidya addicts need forced rehab.

>>108662139yeah, ruined gaming by making pc suffer the least intrusive drm in all of gaming without at the same time repulsing developers and publishers with the prospect of piracyi'd fucking kill myself if pc had the level of drm nintendo has
It's too underpowered. Linux is actually good these days doe. Bazzite just works, VRR just works, KDE just werks(most of the time).KDE needs more work and stability once I had a bug where my mouse dragging no longer worked or right click create folder as well as 1 krashed panel but it was because of Firefox ram garbage. Valve is working on it, that's why proton 11 and KDE are fixing a lot of shit for the steam machine release. Deck was just a test. It's not perfect but KDE is better than windows 11 I choose it. It has better drivers and speed.
>>108659393This. We're talking about people using DRM, bottom of the barrel retarded people.

>>108662139>seething about the deck>buys a shittier product from an equally jewed company kek
>>108662325i don't care about the steamdeck, i just hate valve for creating steam and ruining pc gaming. if i have to choose between the current state of pc or a console then the switch 2 is better than pc or any of the other consoles. i just buy a game and play it and if i want to talk about it the community is always fun to engage with. i've been drinking thc seltzers and playing pokopia and having a blast posting on the forums. it's not valve's fault but another problem with pc is the communities are full of tryhards that drain out all the fun if you engage with them.

It strictly relies on flatpak, appimage, with podman, nix and brew being there as alternatives for advanced users.
>>108662278It's smooth 95% of the time. I've never had any issues except those listed but that was on a fresh install of bazzite before updates.Namely the odd rare krash or some visual bug but ever since I updated bazzite I haven't had anything break. There's was the mouse bug when trying to drag and highlight on desktop but it has never happened again.

>>108659351It's really about Steam and delivering a console-like experience. Linux is just one part of that process. They could use some other kernel and still choose an immutable filesystem, relying on flatpaks the very same.
>>108659958Being retarded? Yes, we can all see that.
>>108663218Retard, Steam offered the same 30% that console devs were offered without the overhead of publishing physical media to console. That put Steam's profit margin beyond any other publisher right from the start. Instead of passing the savings on to the consumer they took it for themselves. Valve turned PC into just another console. I'm willing to bet you're too young to remember and that's why you defend Valve of all fucking companies. Don't believe the propaganda, Valve fucked PC players hard.
>>108663257why is a 30% cut not a dealbreaker for you? why did you by their toy that you can't own
>>108663268What? I don't buy anything from Steam. I pirate all my games unless the dev is selling keys on their own site or they sell through itch.io.
