>be me
>reverse engineering and OSINT enthusiast
>see people spending $500 and 100 hours building "Cyberdecks"
>it’s literally just a Raspberry Pi, a $40 Amazon screen, and a mechanical keyboard shoved into a Pelican case
>thicker than a dictionary, battery lasts 2 hours, weighs 10lbs
>meanwhile, I can pick up a used ThinkPad for $150
>better CPU, better screen, better battery, legendary keyboard
>literally built to survive a warzone anyway

I don’t get it, /g/. Why are people obsessed with building these clunky "bricks" when the peak mobile computing form factor was already perfected in 2012 by IBM/Lenovo?

Is "the vibe" really worth the loss in actual productivity, or is this just LEGOs for people who want to feel like they’re in a Gibson novel?

Convince me why I shouldn’t just stick to my ThinkPad and call it a day.

Cyberdecks are for lifeless fags
>>
>>108660345
Well usually those type of fags want to be discrete and also they tend to play with some frequencies that aren't covered by a laptop WiFi or Bluetooth (but I mean you can buy and USB adapter). It's also nice to have GPIO for some hardware hack but at that point just go to your desk
>>
a razor girl isn't going to show up in your parents basement and suck you off because you have a thinkpad
>>
>>108660768
tf does this even mean
>>
>>108660768
right. you have to buy a razer laptop for that. why else would people buy razer laptops?
>>
Because it sounds cool and you get to work with your hands modding something.

Don't think to hard on it. At the end of the day you will never beat the specs on a factory made model that's been poured over by ateam of engineers. You just do it for the love of the game

People who build those and convince themselves they're superior to ThinkPads are fags.
People who build those because they like tinkering and find it fun are based.

I need this

it's faster than the chromebook I use every day
>>
>>108661805
He’s right, though, for doing your own stuff. Why go through all that trouble when you can just buy a laptop? Cyberdecks are fun to make, but they’re not practical for work.
>>
>>108661490
superior? shut your bitch ass up kid
>>
>>108660345
the new inspiron 14s have snapdragon/adreno chips and 8g ddr5. if you can get a factory refurbish less than 5e its better than any thinkpad at the same price and gets at least twice the battery life at 15-20 hours.
>>
>>108662021
Are you dumb? It’s not about ThinkPads. it’s about cyberdecks. I used ThinkPad as an example.
>>
>>108662067
you said
>Convince me why I shouldn’t just stick to my ThinkPad and call it a day.
thinkpads are poseur shit just one little baby step above cyberdecks.
>>
>>108662089
Yeah, I was comparing a cyberdeck to an average laptop. What I meant is that there’s no point in building a cyberdeck when you can just use a laptop.
>>
>>108662098
that's true. even a tablet or phone is more useful. i have a folding case for my phone with a keyboard attachment built in and i just shell into my home server from it.
>>
>>108660345
It's romanticizing the hyper utilitarian, non conforming design of late 80s/early 90s portable devices while often taking cues from military electronics and other "field" equipment.

The idea is the devices should be durable and pack non-standard equipment for uses outside the scope of a general purpose device like a laptop.

It's dumb. Tech in general moved to the form factors it did because it was the best compromise.
Either way I understand it.

howbout those enemies in deus ex with the laptop looking backpacks or a server strapped to their backs

is the chromebook tiny like that? small unusable keyboard and screen.

I use a stinkpad for chirp radio shit and car tuning but i was thinking of breaking it appart and putting it into a drill suitcase i have.

"Cyberdecks" are useless toys for posers. If you need a Linux PC on the go, just get a Steam Frame and pair that with a Bluetooth keyboard. Comes with added privacy as a bonus.

it's a literary reference to william gibson's novel neuromancer.

it's hobbyist bullshit. like the bullshit that makes up most articles on tom's hardware. just another shiny device to idle away the days.

people are ignorant consoomerists

can't say anything about cyberdecks though, I have no idea about them.

ThinkPads are for getting work done. Cyberdecks are for looking like a l33t h4x0r and posting pretty pictures on Instagram and Reddit. So yes, you are right. Get a ThinkPad.
