I just switched to Arch Linux from Windows 11. What packages are a must have install via pacman, yay, and flatpak as soon as one installs arch linux? What apps/packages /customizations do you like?
>>108664478I was going to say "nethack" just to be snarky, but as a serious answer: it really depends on what you're looking to do with this system.
>>108664478get snapd. pacman isn't terrible but snaps are superior in nearly every way. get as much of your system in snaps as possible. you'll thank me later.
>>108664478I used to be autistic about my package count on arch, but then I got a real job and now I don't care at all anymore. I just install whatever deps I need without a care in the world. I have 1200 packages now.
>>108664478apt
>>108664492For starters, what about just a basic desktop user experience? I just installed gwenview with ffmpeg for thumbnails and kolourpaint for starters.
>>108664547So you're using Plasma then, I'm guessing? You've got wayland and everything set up?Probably going to need a browser. I'd go with Firefox or Chromium for starters. Email client. Thunderbird's a decent start. Want some office stuff? Install libreoffice. Photo editing? gimp. Probably not a bad idea to get steam on there if you plan to do some gaming. There's a whole ecosystem here, I know it's a bit intimidating. It really boils down to what you want to do.
>>108664478
>>108664478use the computer Anon. When you cant do what you want/need install the package that lets you do what you want/need. If you wanted to be told what to install you should have installed a distro that comes with a bunch of shit installed.
OP open a terminal and put this inmv ~ /tmppaste the output in thread

vim, tmux, base-devel, lynx, yay

This is the wrong approach. You are going to bloat your system in no time. Wait until you actually need to do something and then figure out what to get accordingly.
>>108666926>You are going to bloat your system in no time.you can install shit on arch willy nilly and never end up with a system as bloated as windows is by default
>>108666930No need to set the bar this low
>>108664478>sudo pacman -R plasma-meta>sudo pacman -S xfce4 xfce4-goodies
>>108664478Use modern alternatives for often-used CLI tools first. Fish over bash/zsh, eza over ls, bat over cat, btop over (h)top
>>108665010Another "systemd bad" retard
>>108664829Great list.
>>108666926Worrying about bloat is overrated imho.I mean, yes, it makes sense if you're working on an old potato of a computer where every mb of memory and storage matters. But if you're using a somewhat decent computer from the past ten years or so you're really just wasting resources. And yes, what goes unused is absolutely wasted.
