Why are there so many characters that are difficult to type on a standard English keyboard?Like how the fuck do I type an en-dash.
>>108668189> He doesn't have Unicode shortcuts memorized.
>>108668189There are over 150000 assigned characters. There are roughly 100 keys on a standard keyboard. You do the math. The standard way is alt codes, and memorizing the codes you frequently use. You can also type some symbols through the emoji/symbol picker (win+period on windows), or IME for non-english text.
>>108668189There has never been a justification to use en-dash or em-dash.In the past, it made you look pretentious. In the present, it makes you look like a clanker.
>>108668238I like it — it looks cleaner than a comma.
>>108668241I don't like the em-dash. It's too long and lanky. Better to use the en-dash (I use it on my phone, where getting at it is much easier).
>>108668227>The standard way is alt codes, and memorizing the codes you frequently use.'Cept the trend towards ten-keyless boards means people are giving up that functionality.
>>108668189International US layout for the most common symbols, or PowerToys for special characters like tm, numero, emojis and that shit
>>108668258Which keyboard app do you use?
>>108668282Just the stock one. If I want an en/em-dash I just press down on the regular hyphen and it pops up the various options.
>>108668189Linux has a compose mode key,you press the special keythen press a strings of other keys and it enters the special symbolit is super useful and neat.>Compose key is customizable, mine is right ALT, since I never use it– —®™€¿
>>108668285What's the stock one? AOSP?
>>108668270*Trannies are giving up on that feature, much like their dicks. Anyone seriously into IT wants a full-sized keyboard.

On android, you keep pushing on '-' and you will have the choices between all the dashes. also work with other symbols/keys.
>>108668291i love this shit so much.but yeah, ASCII made some fuckin weird decisions. dashes are pretty damn important. wtf is ¬ or @? there's + and arguably -, but no division or proper multiplication sign...?also, Linux/monospace nerds, remember that it's ``this'' and not ``this". if you're trolling me, it works, but you should still stop.
I'm glad iOS changed the apostrophe to be defaulted to ' as opposed to `. Made it really annoying to edit wikis.
>>108668189>Like how the fuck do I type an en-dash.You use LaTeX for markup.
>>108668189Just use a fucking comma, preferably an oxford comma, like a normal person instead of an em dash

>>108668189I use punctuation em dashes all the time and what's have done but technically use the en dash character. I am concerned that people read my writing and think it's ai now
>>108670975>I am concerned that people read my writing and think it's ai nowAs well you fucking should.
>>108668291Yeah the compose key is good shit>>108668189Is that really the correct use for "en dash"? Here no one uses the em dash but every use of em dash is replaced with en dash
>>108668270No one who uses a computer for actual work buy keyboards without numpads...
>>108671205Separate numpads are supremely comfy tho.
>>108668876thanks for the yellow paint
>>108668241>I like (prefer) run-on sentenceswhy did you not just write two sentences here?>I like it. It looks cleaner than a comma.
>>108672661An em dash can join two independent clauses to create emphasis, an abrupt break, or a dramatic shift. It's more informal but also more emphatic than a semicolon or period.
>>108668189compose key. anything else is too autistic even for me and i was diagnosed with autism.
>>108668238>There has never been a justification to use en-dash or em-dash.wrong, plenty of valid uses of em-dash.Though on 4chan, using anything other than -- (double hyphen) does make you look like a pretentious faggot. With en-dash, most won't even notice and just assume you typed a hyphen.
>>108668189>Like how the fuck do I type an en-dash.On Windows, Alt+Numpad 0150. You need the leading zero.On Linux, it depends. On my machine it's Compose (Right Alt), two hyphens, and a period: --.The em dash is either Alt+0151 or Compose ---
>>108668189>difficult to type on a standard English keyboardJust use the compose key....Your operating system has this feature, right?
>>108668189>hyphen, em dash, en dash, gay dash...Dash is dash. One key pressed, zero shits given.
