Should I get the Dell 16 premium or the Thinkpad p1 gen 8 from work?I will use it for gaming but not triple A games or anything mostly friendslop like PEAK or some 3D puzzle games. I'm leaning towards the Thinkpad because the keyboard is better (I type exclusively on the laptop when at work) and because the older Dells we had were dogshit in terms of reliability. But on paper the Dell is better so I'm still on the fence. The Dell also has an OLED screen which isn't shown in the image

First time posting here. After graduating I decided to get my first personal laptops, and unfortunately have fallen for the thinkpad meme.Got a T440s which is my daily driver for my work and I feel so proud of it as a first major personal purchase. Since I needed something with Windows 11 due to some bullshit windows security for a remote desk connection I found a x280 for 150. Pretty solid, great screen and portability but not quite fun for long periods. Now I've gotten the terrible habit of doomscrolling Marketplace for some oldies. found an uncommon SL400 which I wanna test dual booting/upgrading it as well as add it a working wifi card. Got my eyes set for a T410 and an x220 for 50 each, and will stop the splurging there. So far my favorite things are the keyboard and the nipple. It's impressive just how much quicker I feel on Excel after learning some shortcuts with PgUp/PgDn and not using the trackpad. Sorry for the blogpost but I've fallen too hard and too deep into this rabbit hole and have no one to share it with. I might post later a pic of my collection so far like those /k/tists with their respective pieces of old fun junkIt's been so long since I've been here, captchas have become IQ tests now
>>108681731The SL series is basically the older equivalent of the modern day E series, I don't think it's a good idea to buy any of them even at a cheap(er) price. Who knows how many reliability problems they might have now, a decade and a half after they were first released. Even back then they were flamed by reviewers for basically being reskinned IdeaPads, you should go for either the T410 or X220. If you want a C2D shitbox you could always buy a T400 or a 4:3 T61 if you care that much about aspect ratios. I have a W500 myself and it works excellently for everything I need it to do, which is mostly playing older games and ripping and encoding media.
Do T-14s look meaningfully different from X1s? I want to get a new work laptop but the IT team is convinced that they are mandated with buying nothing but complete garbage as long as the spec sheet look right. Anything I will miss from my old X1?
>>108677696You already have to use a shitty OS, may as well go with OSX and a very well-made made but unnecessarily heavy laptop.
>>108677118I reckon nobody on /tpg/ has an opinion on the P series because a brand new one could potentially cost more than a Macbook Pro, and that they are rarely sold on the second hand market.
>>108685608They're configured weirdly. At least in my territory. Intel ones are all heavier and have 14.5 inch screens, AMD ones don't have OLED. They do allow you to get the X1 spec but for less though at the cost of weighing a lot more.

Is the E490 good? Found one for 49€, looks ok but no RAM nor storage included, has an 8th gen i5. I only plan on doing light web browsing tasks and video streaming, will also be using Linux (Arch or Fedora, maybe I'll try Gentoo)This will be my first thinkpad too so not too sure on what to look for specifically.I wanted something like the T470/T480 at first but they're too expensive, in rough shape and usually come with no storage, ram battery and charger.

Why does lenovo have so many Thinkpad variants? What are the actual differences between E and L as for lenovo to consider worthwhile selling both models since both are "lower quality entry thinkpads"? At least Dell is quite simple to understand within their market between Inspiron, Latitude and Precision. It's almost as if Lenovo treats the Thinkpad as it's own brand itself and each letter would be a separate model As an aside, studying the T450-T480 models I've come to the conclusion that they aren't that different among each other as to be considered good deals to get if i can get a t440(s) or a t480, mainly because of the quad core. Am I correct in this assesment? Because in my country you can see basically all these models for a similar 150-200 range which deletes any price preference
>>108676677Bought a beater T450s for $90 on ebay recently. Came with a sticky tab key which I tried to carefully pry loose so I could clean it, ended up breaking it so now it's flopping around like a fish out of water. Replaceable battery was DOA. I can see why people love ThinkPads but most of the replacement parts seem to be trash quality and the golden age ThinkPads are getting so long in the tooth that I wonder if the ThinkPad scene will still be a thing a few years from now.

T480 or T14G1/G2 AMD? In a dilemma here. Using one for Linux/work and one that could last long enough on battery like full work/8 hours. I know T480 could last long with it's 96wh battery but I'm curious on T14 AMD efficiency. How's the battery life on T14 AMD for my requirements?
>>108694703> my requirementsDefine what's your work. Looking/replying at emails? Compiling code? Vibecoding? Running containers / nomad / k8s locally with VMs?
Is 16GB of RAM enough for my T480? I'm tryna upgrade since I've only got 8GB atm. I run about 2 lightweight VMs at the same time for os development while coding / compiling said code and watching YouTube and browsing the web. The VMs have a ram limit of like 2-4GB each. I don't wanna fork over tons of cash for used DDR4, because that's also affected by the DRAM crisis somehow...

It seems the wifi card in my x220 shat itself. It's an Intel AC 7260 with Bluetooth I bought two years ago and it always worked perfectly, but now it shits itself every 30 to 60 minutes and only comes back after rebooting. There are errors in the kernel logs that have something to do with power management. It could very well be a configuration issue, because this startet happening after upgrading to Devuan Excalibur. Booting with aspm off didn't change anything and disabeling power saving in the iwlwifi driver didn't help either. That's why I believe the card is dead or dying or the x220 has issues. I sadly don't have another card I could test.
>>108676677My x230 sometimes randomly turns itself off and i have no idea why. It happens both with the battery unplugged and also with the battery plugged and power adapter unplugged. Any ideas or suggestions?
>>108694813Can't say for non s variants, but my t14s gen2 amd (5850U) with ~300 cycles on battery have almost all work day battery (~7:30), my work is heavy web browsing, writing code in vim, terraform / opentofu, packer, vagrant and others. But I'm usually docked for external display.Even tho t14 gen2 non s have 13% smaller battery you'll be fine.t480 with both internal and external will probably have higher battery life.

woulda thunk my thinkpad from work would be able to deal with elden ring since the processor's pretty ok but even setting everything down low couldn't help it run at sub-10 fps thanks to its crap graphics card lol. short of getting an external thunderbolt dock for a gpu, i guess i can consider a steam deck, or maybe a p series since i'm not sure i'd want a handheld
>>108699383That's interesting. Maybe it really is a kernel related issue. If I could confirm it being a kernel bug, I would report this to the Debian devs. Don't know how many kernel updates Debian got since then, I just updated my system a week ago.
I have a T430 and I have two questions:1.) I want to replace my hinges as the right hinge broke, and although I tried to tape it up, it's slowly been breaking the shell of the sides of the screen, I tried to look in Ebay for hinge replacements, but I am afraid of being scammed (I already admittedly got fucked over with the T430 I bought), and to top it off it will take months to arrive and some of the prices are insane. What's the best place for me to get a hinge replacement in Europe?2.) My CPU temps seem to suck ass to such a point it reaches 90 degrees when playing Half-Life 1, I've been told this could be a thermal paste issue or a heatsink issue, if it is either one, what's the best thermal paste for a T430 and what's the best heatsink replacement? Please also note I am technically retarded and the T430 was my first time doing any sort of hardware modification.
>>108700722I played Elden Ring at a stable 60FPS on a 980Ti so any reasonable modern dGPU should have no problem running it at 1080p or even 2k.

>>108703645I would look for a broken T430 as you can likely pick them up for like 20€ and it's very unlikely a scam.If you're already replacing the thermal paste might as well have some fun and look for a quad core CPU since the T430 has a socketed CPU.Notably the i7-3612QM and the i7-3632QM have the same TDP as the Dual Core options so you won't run into heat issues. Also any thermal paste is fine.
>>108703701>aliexpress has parts. I know Aliexpress is well-talked about here, but I want to know how likely it is of me ending up buying a knock-off part or getting scammed in some way, because I seem to have very bad luck when it comes to getting scammed. Hell the T430 I bought was said to have an SSD, but it came with an SHD and a faulty DVD drive despite claiming to being in a "very good condition", I fear there may be other faulty components because of this. >im guessing you never opened the thing before either so a repaste is well overdue. any paste will do fine desuI actually have opened it up when I upgraded the CPU, but I fear either I pasted it wrong, or the thermal paste I used wasn't good enough (Arctic MX-4) or alternatively, that the heat-sink is faulty in some way, because the temps I am getting don't really seem realistic.
>>108703722>I would look for a broken T430 as you can likely pick them up for like 20€ and it's very unlikely a scam.Good idea, actually yeah. I should've thought about it beforehand, thanks for the advice. Although, how would I extract the hinges from the broken T430 to transfer them into the one I have?> If you're already replacing the thermal paste might as well have some fun and look for a quad core CPU since the T430 has a socketed CPU.Already did actually, I upgraded it to an i7-3632QM.>so you won't run into heat issues.Which is what makes my current heating issues unusual, as this isn't really supposed to happen.

Finally got my first Thinkpad in the mail yesterday, a T460. Should have a hard drive following it up today. I played around in the BIOS a bit, disabling TPM and AMT, and managed to get a USB drive to boot, and now I'm wondering what OS to install. My plans for this, so far, is just to run old games, and browse here and YouTube. Considering I just learned I won't be able to use the WWAN slot for a second drive, I have to choose between LMDE, Devuan, or Windows 7. I'm used to Debian so far, and I started my foray into Linux with Mint, but considering what's going on, I'd like to have some peace of mind and be on a distro that isn't held hostage by corporate or political interests that want to fuck me over. On the other hand, I'm running a 6th gen I5, the most intensive game I'm using for a benchmark is New Vegas, I won't be storing my documents or passwords on it, and the riskiest I'll be on the internet is browsing F95Zone or ImageFap, should the temptations overcome me. 7 would be perfectly adequate, especially with VxKex, and I have another version to fiddle around with. What are your thoughts on an suitable OS/distro? What other tips should I know when it comes to setting up my relatively new Thinkpad?
>>108695134I have an update. The card shat itself. I have found the original wifi card my ThinkPad came with and put it back in and the instability went away. Now I have to get a new wifi card. Any recommendations, besides the 7260HMW? Haven't had the best of luck with this thing.

>>108728720frameworks are a bit of a meme at this point. flimsy build quality and very expensive for what it is. the big selling point is supposed to be repairability (thinkpads are good for this and parts are much cheaper/more available than frame work) and the swappable ports. if you have a very specific setup then maybe the swappable ports make sense, but given there are only four slots and you need to use one of them for usb-c charging, a modern thinkpad almost certainly gives you better options there. the main things people complain about for thinkpads are the screen and battery, frameworks aren't very good in those departments eithersupposedly the new pro model coming out in july/august fixes a lot of those issues with a better battery, screen, and aluminum housing but it's also like $1800
Reminder that X220/T420/T480 fetishists are mentally deranged and the only reason they're defending their precious hotswap battery is because they're running ancient Intel chips that can't last two hours of use on battery, while Panther Lake chips are showing record battery life out of any x86 chips to date, just because they represent over a decade of semiconductor technology evolution. Plus, USB-C charging and easily replaceable internal CRU batteries alleviates any and all needs for hot-swap batteries when out in the field.Simply put, 18650 based hot-swap batteries were a half-measure for Intel's overly power hungry mobile chips that make no sense nowadays.
>>108729793The fact that there's no aftermarket "top cover" replacement for the Framework that gives you an old-school style trackpoint is fucking disappointing. I love the nipple on my X230 but even later model Thinkpads have a pretty lousy one.

It's not particularly aggressive, but it's still annoying, especially when it doesn't compare to ThinkPads (in my opinion), due to its lack of a trackpoint, and non-existent secondhand market. Sure, I *could* spend anywhere between close to $1000, to $2000, but I (and many other neets) can make due with something older and inexpensive for casual use away from my desktop. There's also the fear of it being "finessed" at the library. I think they would be a viable option if they stopped trying to mirror MacBooks, and added a trackpoint. Personally, I think the modularity gimmick is retarded.

T480s' have better build quality, are lighter, and come with at least FHD screens by default. T480 is a *tad bit* more expensive than it used to be since normalfags have been memed into buying them; T480 is the new X230.
X230 my beloved
>>108735194that's a great screen bro
x230 is having the following issues:1. Only works with AC, disconnecting AC powers off even with battery plugged in.2. Cannot boot with any battery (tested multiple)3. The battery is detected by the OS, but will not charge and seems to not be using its charge (charge decreases very slowly even with heavy usage).4. I have tried hard resetting (i.e. turn off, remove battery and ac, power button for 60 seconds, also tried the variant with CMOS unplugged).Did I blow a fuse or something? Am I fucked?
How do i make my T480 use the removable battery first? Seems I could not find any settings for the work around.

I like Linux desktop, but it's in a weird spot in my opinion. X11 is still the most stable option for daily use + gaming, but its security model is honestly insane, literally any app can potentially sniff your keyboard input or spy on other windows. That’s not some edge case, that’s just how it was designed. You’d never accept that on Windows or macOS without exploits. Sure, “don’t run malware”, but that’s not really a defense of the architecture. Wayland fixes this properly with real isolation, but it’s still not as bulletproof in everyday desktop usage (Steam, random apps, edge cases). So we’re stuck in this trade off: X11 = works great but insecure, Wayland = secure, but sometimes janky

>>108782474>The full-sized SD card slot has been replaced in favor of a microSD slotNot anymore, they completely removed it in 2022
>>108776531You could connect the display to another laptop and see if the backlight works there
any developers working on linux?T or P series for running shit like docker, postgres, compilers, servers?i would be using this laptop just to work on the couch because sitting on a chair all day hurts, but i do already have a main machine so far T14 gen 7 looks best but wondering if there are any issues or something better?
>>108787625Why would you need anything more than ssh client to your main machine in that case?
>>108786398>2022 was almost 10 years agoWe own nothing.

>>108782449>battery critical/charging/full indicator>storage activity indicator>sd card activity indicatorAnd I had a hard time moving to an X220 from an X200 since they removed the user-facing battery indicator
my t520 cpu fan died but it's cheaper to just buy a new t520 and swap in my ssd and ram.
>>108789587The other two after battery is for caps and num lock
>>108781127Jesus, that is absurd. And I thought I had a hard time remapping a Chromebook keyboard to have semi-normal keys.
>>108789788The T520 replacement fans (with heatsink) on AE seem to be this part number (KSB06105HA). But you can buy just the fan. I'd try it for $6.
>>108676677>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook)I got one of these things, it's pretty old I think from 2012 but it has 8GB of RAM, I think I'm gonna throw a SATA SSD on it with Windows 10 LTSC and Linux Mint in a dualboot config for some basic light tasks. Let me know if you have any recommendations for me to consider.
>>108788632sounds good in theory but in practice you would know it's not the same if you actually tried to do development this way
>>108676677recently got a x1 1291, but i'm having issues finding any compatible charges for a reasonable price, any ideas where to look?
>>108790959Nice keyboard, almost the current ThinkPad layout but non-chiclet and with a soft numpad. Tempted to buy one just for the fun of it.
I have committed the great mistake of becoming sysadmin for several prod servers and now I need to be able to carry a computer everywhere and also to use as a backup in case my desktop is unavailable.I got my old man a t480 and he has been enthralled with it so I feel like getting a thinkpad too.Can anyone reccomend any good model not too expensive that I can get refurbished to use for slight dev work that I can depend on?
>>108793099T14 gen 1-2 AMD are the current sweet spot in value for money in most places. The input devices are much like in a T480 and the CPUs are a big step up.
>>108793355>in most places.FUCK this qualification to death up the ass. A basic T14 Gen 2 Intel config goes for around €300 where I live. The equivalent AMD version is unavailable most of the time and starts at €500 ("backorder, delivery in two weeks, mabye)".
yeah after seeing that copilot key i won't be buying a thinkpadreally wanted a new model to last me the next 10 years but will look elsewherei think dell is next unless something else has linux support?
is T14 gen 6 /tpg/ approved?
>>108795110dell has a copilot key as well
>>108793099do you need an ethernet port?
>>108795110Every new windows 11 machine will have a copilot key, it's literally a contractual obligations to ship it as an OEM system integrator.
My T480s' mouse likes to misbehave. Sometimes the trackpoint's buttons refuse to behave as left and right click, instead moving the mouse by a few pixels to the right every time they are pressed or released. Other times the touchpad freezes completely, and I have to hit the laptop with my palm to make it work again. In all cases, a quick restart or hibernating/waking fixes it.I've reinstalled drivers, swapped keyboards, nothing has worked. Is it over? Has something I can't replace gone defective?
>>108796524My gf won't have sex with me since I upgraded to a Copilot+AI penis
>>108796565have you considered not hitting it
>>108797045The problem began before the hitting.
Do any anons have some resources/advice for cleaning thinkpads? Including the inside and the outer case for creases and markings on the lid itself? Currently on a X220, thanks for any help.
>>108790959Update: I'm genuinely impressed with how well this works. The rubbery coating around the bezel fucking sucks though please tell me newer laptops have long since stopped using this crap.

bros I'm scared. This is my first thinkpad, P14s gen 2. It's been installing the 1.69 firmware update for more than an hour now. Lenovo logo screen says "Please wait while we install a system update" with no progress bar.Is this normal or do I have to poke the reset hole?
>>108805612If it isn't done within an hour there's no hope. Get ready to flash it externally or replace the board.
dead thread
Anyone actually have a framework?I see it shilled in place of the thinkpad recently
>>108808835I have a 16. I've liked it and have used it since the first release, but am thinking about switching because1. Still no official keyboard with the layout I use, even though the 13 and now 13 pro have it.2. It gets noisy whenever I start to use it for light gaming or whatever. I think I have the shitty liquid metal thermal paste they had issues with in the early batches.3. Been seeing a lot of issues that make me think it needs a new motherboard (probably bad thermals from #2, but don't really want to put money in because #1).
My 10 year old E480's battery died so I replaced it with a chink battery (seems legit) and it was running fine. I even installed gentoo with LUKS on it, but now today I booted it and it froze shortly after Xfce4 started, it just completely froze (even picture froze to Xfce4). I shutdown power and power it on -> screen is black but fans do start spinning, nothing happens. Now after few tries even fans won't spin, it kinda powers on somewhat but it's dark and fans don't spin. What the fuck is wrong with it? I plugged it just to charger and let it charge for a while in case the linux battery reading was wrong (it showed 60% when froze).
>>108808889What did you use before that anon? Also windows or linux?
>>108809081Linux mostly. I did Windows a little as well, but it ran hotter and caused the fans to spin up loud more often. Before I used a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (Gen 10), which is what I am starting to use again because of the issues. Don't like the limited storage on the X1 and camera doesn't have linux drivers.
>>108809148>caused the fans to spin up loud more often.is it just me or is windows on 12th and 13th gen intel using 3-5W more idling and doing light tasks compared to linux?(on the same hardware)
>>108809380No idea on the specifics, the 16 only has AMD cpus (Ryzen 7 7840HS in mine). At least since Windows 11, I've always been seing more background stuff going on and things running ever so slightly worse compared to basically any LInux distro on any PC I have.
I need a thinkpad for work purposes, for the most part just carry it around use it for teaching related work. (Besides of shitposting in between hour breaks or sufficient that I could use an intuos for drawing)
>>108765766it's about 15% faster, with extra 10W tdp. not worth the possible cooling issues. go with i7-3632qm imo. I'm using both in elitebooks, 3632qm is hassle-free option.

>>108731160Modern Dell laptops from around 2020-onward are abysmal dogshit with bad design, bad specs, and poor build quality. Cheap imitations of the MacBook line to be avoided at all costs. Earlier laptops with modular components, ports, thickness, etc. are mostly fine though. As for whether ThinkPads are going back to their roots I couldn't tell you for certain, I'll believe it when I see it as time goes on.
>>108808962See if the issue is replicated while running off only auxiliary power without the battery if possible. If not, you got ripped off with a shit battery and I would request a refund and return it or carefully dispose of it before it burns your house down.
>>108781127Install Linux at that point and say no to Microsaar Jeetdows.
>>108759939>no "Gay Sex WITH HATS ON" tab>no Navy Seals copypastaBruh
>>108728720Framework gimmick is that you can update the motherboard if you need newer hardware. The problem is that it's much, MUCH cheaper to just get a brand new laptop from other brands. Not to mention that business laptop lineup is already selling spare parts for repairing purpose.
>>108812396It wasn't even turning on without the battery replacement, I don't know why. It recharges fine. The old battery was DEAD, like totally dead.
>>108812784To add to this: after charging the new batter for a while now, it turns on and boots into Xfce4 desktop. ZFS reported issues but it fixed itself, so something happened with either power or ZFS. To add to this: first boot attempt after charging didn't boot to any UEFI system at all, it just showed the boot options menu and none worked, reboot and it booted fine into gentoo...
