Should I get the Dell 16 premium or the Thinkpad p1 gen 8 from work?

I will use it for gaming but not triple A games or anything mostly friendslop like PEAK or some 3D puzzle games. I'm leaning towards the Thinkpad because the keyboard is better (I type exclusively on the laptop when at work) and because the older Dells we had were dogshit in terms of reliability.

But on paper the Dell is better so I'm still on the fence. The Dell also has an OLED screen which isn't shown in the image

First time posting here. After graduating I decided to get my first personal laptops, and unfortunately have fallen for the thinkpad meme.

Got a T440s which is my daily driver for my work and I feel so proud of it as a first major personal purchase. Since I needed something with Windows 11 due to some bullshit windows security for a remote desk connection I found a x280 for 150. Pretty solid, great screen and portability but not quite fun for long periods.

Now I've gotten the terrible habit of doomscrolling Marketplace for some oldies. found an uncommon SL400 which I wanna test dual booting/upgrading it as well as add it a working wifi card. Got my eyes set for a T410 and an x220 for 50 each, and will stop the splurging there.

So far my favorite things are the keyboard and the nipple. It's impressive just how much quicker I feel on Excel after learning some shortcuts with PgUp/PgDn and not using the trackpad.

Sorry for the blogpost but I've fallen too hard and too deep into this rabbit hole and have no one to share it with. I might post later a pic of my collection so far like those /k/tists with their respective pieces of old fun junk

The SL series is basically the older equivalent of the modern day E series, I don't think it's a good idea to buy any of them even at a cheap(er) price. Who knows how many reliability problems they might have now, a decade and a half after they were first released. Even back then they were flamed by reviewers for basically being reskinned IdeaPads, you should go for either the T410 or X220. If you want a C2D shitbox you could always buy a T400 or a 4:3 T61 if you care that much about aspect ratios. I have a W500 myself and it works excellently for everything I need it to do, which is mostly playing older games and ripping and encoding media.

Do T-14s look meaningfully different from X1s? I want to get a new work laptop but the IT team is convinced that they are mandated with buying nothing but complete garbage as long as the spec sheet look right. Anything I will miss from my old X1?

They're configured weirdly. At least in my territory. Intel ones are all heavier and have 14.5 inch screens, AMD ones don't have OLED. They do allow you to get the X1 spec but for less though at the cost of weighing a lot more.

Is the E490 good? Found one for 49€, looks ok but no RAM nor storage included, has an 8th gen i5. I only plan on doing light web browsing tasks and video streaming, will also be using Linux (Arch or Fedora, maybe I'll try Gentoo)

This will be my first thinkpad too so not too sure on what to look for specifically.
I wanted something like the T470/T480 at first but they're too expensive, in rough shape and usually come with no storage, ram battery and charger.

Why does lenovo have so many Thinkpad variants? What are the actual differences between E and L as for lenovo to consider worthwhile selling both models since both are "lower quality entry thinkpads"?
At least Dell is quite simple to understand within their market between Inspiron, Latitude and Precision. It's almost as if Lenovo treats the Thinkpad as it's own brand itself and each letter would be a separate model

As an aside, studying the T450-T480 models I've come to the conclusion that they aren't that different among each other as to be considered good deals to get if i can get a t440(s) or a t480, mainly because of the quad core. Am I correct in this assesment? Because in my country you can see basically all these models for a similar 150-200 range which deletes any price preference

Bought a beater T450s for $90 on ebay recently. Came with a sticky tab key which I tried to carefully pry loose so I could clean it, ended up breaking it so now it's flopping around like a fish out of water. Replaceable battery was DOA. It seems the wifi card in my x220 shat itself. It's an Intel AC 7260 with Bluetooth I bought two years ago and it always worked perfectly, but now it shits itself every 30 to 60 minutes and only comes back after rebooting. There are errors in the kernel logs that have something to do with power management. It could very well be a configuration issue, because this startet happening after upgrading to Devuan Excalibur. Booting with aspm off didn't change anything and disabeling power saving in the iwlwifi driver didn't help either. That's why I believe the card is dead or dying or the x220 has issues. I sadly don't have another card I could test.

Can't say for non s variants, but my t14s gen2 amd (5850U) with ~300 cycles on battery have almost all work day battery (~7:30), my work is heavy web browsing, writing code in vim, terraform / opentofu, packer, vagrant and others. But I'm usually docked for external display.

Even tho t14 gen2 non s have 13% smaller battery you'll be fine.
t480 with both internal and external will probably have higher battery life.

I have a T430 and I have two questions:
1.) I want to replace my hinges as the right hinge broke, and although I tried to tape it up, it's slowly been breaking the shell of the sides of the screen, I tried to look in Ebay for hinge replacements, but I am afraid of being scammed (I already admittedly got fucked over with the T430 I bought), and to top it off it will take months to arrive and some of the prices are insane. What's the best place for me to get a hinge replacement in Europe?
2.) My CPU temps seem to suck ass to such a point it reaches 90 degrees when playing Half-Life 1, I've been told this could be a thermal paste issue or a heatsink issue, if it is either one, what's the best thermal paste for a T430 and what's the best heatsink replacement?
Please also note I am technically retarded and the T430 was my first time doing any sort of hardware modification.

I would look for a broken T430 as you can likely pick them up for like 20€ and it's very unlikely a scam.
If you're already replacing the thermal paste might as well have some fun and look for a quad core CPU since the T430 has a socketed CPU.
Notably the i7-3612QM and the i7-3632QM have the same TDP as the Dual Core options so you won't run into heat issues.
Also any thermal paste is fine.

I know Aliexpress is well-talked about here, but I want to know how likely it is of me ending up buying a knock-off part or getting scammed in some way, because I seem to have very bad luck when it comes to getting scammed. Hell the T430 I bought was said to have an SSD, but it came with an SHD and a faulty DVD drive despite claiming to being in a "very good condition", I fear there may be other faulty components because of this.

I actually have opened it up when I upgraded the CPU, but I fear either I pasted it wrong, or the thermal paste I used wasn't good enough (Arctic MX-4) or alternatively, that the heat-sink is faulty in some way, because the temps I am getting don't really seem realistic.

Already did actually, I upgraded it to an i7-3632QM.

This is how much I had put at the time, before it was a much bigger blob, but a friend told me it was "too much", so I removed a bit of it and he said that this end result was perfect. I got no idea if it was.

I didn't touch anything screen related AT ALL while rebuilding it.
CPU, HDD both are working and feel warm to the touch,but the screen itself shows absolutely fuck all. It keeps flickering as i mentioned even then it is supposedly turned off. I tried with the charger that never fails me and still happens

Well that is certainly a problem. First thing I would make sure is that your airflow isn't obstructed and then run any benchmark to see if we're instantly throttleing or if it's a slow buildup.

Finally got my first Thinkpad in the mail yesterday, a T460. Should have a hard drive following it up today. I played around in the BIOS a bit, disabling TPM and AMT, and managed to get a USB drive to boot, and now I'm wondering what OS to install. My plans for this, so far, is just to run old games, and browse here and YouTube. Considering I just learned I won't be able to use the WWAN slot for a second drive, I have to choose between LMDE, Devuan, or Windows 7. I'm used to Debian so far, and I started my foray into Linux with Mint, but considering what's going on, I'd like to have some peace of mind and be on a distro that isn't held hostage by corporate or political interests that want to fuck me over. On the other hand, I'm running a 6th gen I5, the most intensive game I'm using for a benchmark is New Vegas, I won't be storing my documents or passwords on it, and the riskiest I'll be on the internet is browsing F95Zone or ImageFap, should the temptations overcome me. 7 would be perfectly adequate, especially with VxKex, and I have another version to fiddle around with. What are your thoughts on an suitable OS/distro? What other tips should I know when it comes to setting up my relatively new Thinkpad?

I have an update. The card shat itself. I have found the original wifi card my ThinkPad came with and put it back in and the instability went away. Now I have to get a new wifi card. Any recommendations, besides the 7260HMW? Haven't had the best of luck with this thing.

has anyone tried enrolling their own secure boot keys (db,KEK,PK) using a thinkpad on linux? did it brick your computers? The keyboard feels amazing. It's a non-chiclet keyboard with nice travel depth. The touchpad is not glass but there's a synaptic driver to make the circular scrolling function which is a cool gimmick. You move your finger around the circumference ring to scroll up and down.

I have a poor impression of Framework from how much it's shilled on here. It's not particularly aggressive, but it's still annoying, especially when it doesn't compare to ThinkPads (in my opinion), due to its lack of a trackpoint, and non-existent secondhand market. 1. Only works with AC, disconnecting AC powers off even with battery plugged in.
2. Cannot boot with any battery (tested multiple)
3. The battery is detected by the OS, but will not charge and seems to not be using its charge (charge decreases very slowly even with heavy usage).
4. I have tried hard resetting (i.e. turn off, remove battery and ac, power button for 60 seconds, also tried the variant with CMOS unplugged).

All Framework has to do is make a model that you can drop a Lenovo classic keyboard (x220/t420) into and they could print money.

They could probably do it where they make a tiny keyboard daughterboard for the "conversion" to their keyboard ribbon connector, a keyboard bezel to fit the extra depth, and a hinge set to compensate for that extra depth in the bottom section, so the screen closes right.

Yes, the lighter grey one is aluminium. You can identify it by looking at the bottom left corner where it says Aluminium Chassis, and has a grey box saying Al like on a periodic table.

X11 is still the most stable option for daily use + gaming, but its security model is honestly insane, literally any app can potentially sniff your keyboard input or spy on other windows. That’s not some edge case, that’s just how it was designed. You’d never accept that on Windows or macOS without exploits. Sure, “don’t run malware”, but that’s not really a defense of the architecture.

Wayland fixes this properly with real isolation, but it’s still not as bulletproof in everyday desktop usage (Steam, random apps, edge cases). So we’re stuck in this trade off: X11 = works great but insecure, Wayland = secure, but sometimes janky

In the few weeks I've had my 2 in 1 convertible x390 yoga, i've had this issue where debian's built-in wacom drivers will basically stop working completely after 2 weeks and the usbhid/hid-generic drivers will see the digitizer and touchscreen input will break but not pen input (it's still unstable and pen input pendown/penup becomes unreliable).

I know it's not an EC or hardware failure issue because booting into a debian liveCD for 11, 12 and 13 reveal no touchscreen issues and even the windows 10 and 11 installer media support the touchscreen no issue, fresh installing debian always seems to fix it so I made a fresh debian root filesystem image and I just reformat my machine whenever the issue comes back, I have no idea what's causing it, i'm not breaking anything by messing with /etc or udev or systemd, it literally just breaks on it's own.
All I know is 2 weeks passes on my debian system and the touchscreen stops working till I reformat the root partition with a fresh install, why the fuck

There's an 8th gen Thinkpad near me with a 512GB NVME, backlit kb, i7 CPU, max res screen, and charger. I'm interested in buying, but the Jew within wants to wait for the seller to lower the price. Assuming everything works--battery, NVME, kb--then it's relatively worth buying since I'd pay less compared to bringing a for-parts unit up to spec. Newer models don't use HDDs, silly. I'd be more interested in them adding back the battery capacity indicator light on the front bezel. Of course, as far as I'm aware, anything post-8th gen is a piece of shit, so it's a moot point.

The full-sized SD card slot has been replaced in favor of a microSD slot, usually on the back, which needs an ejection tool. At least, that's how it is on the X280.

I got one of these things, it's pretty old I think from 2012 but it has 8GB of RAM, I think I'm gonna throw a SATA SSD on it with Windows 10 LTSC and Linux Mint in a dualboot config for some basic light tasks. Let me know if you have any recommendations for me to consider.

Nice keyboard, almost the current ThinkPad layout but non-chiclet and with a soft numpad. Tempted to buy one just for the fun of it.

I have committed the great mistake of becoming sysadmin for several prod servers and now I need to be able to carry a computer everywhere and also to use as a backup in case my desktop is unavailable.
I got my old man a t480 and he has been enthralled with it so I feel like getting a thinkpad too.

Can anyone reccomend any good model not too expensive that I can get refurbished to use for slight dev work that I can depend on?

T14 gen 1-2 AMD are the current sweet spot in value for money in most places. The input devices are much like in a T480 and the CPUs are a big step up.

FUCK this qualification to death up the ass. A basic T14 Gen 2 Intel config goes for around €300 where I live. The equivalent AMD version is unavailable most of the time and starts at €500 ("backorder, delivery in two weeks, mabye)".

Every new windows 11 machine will have a copilot key, it's literally a contractual obligations to ship it as an OEM system integrator.

My T480s' mouse likes to misbehave. Sometimes the trackpoint's buttons refuse to behave as left and right click, instead moving the mouse by a few pixels to the right every time they are pressed or released. Other times the touchpad freezes completely, and I have to hit the laptop with my palm to make it work again. In all cases, a quick restart or hibernating/waking fixes it.

I've reinstalled drivers, swapped keyboards, nothing has worked. Is it over? Has something I can't replace gone defective?

bros I'm scared. This is my first thinkpad, P14s gen 2. It's been installing the 1.69 firmware update for more than an hour now. Lenovo logo screen says "Please wait while we install a system update" with no progress bar.

Is this normal or do I have to poke the reset hole?

I have a 16. I've liked it and have used it since the first release, but am thinking about switching because
1. Still no official keyboard with the layout I use, even though the 13 and now 13 pro have it.
2. It gets noisy whenever I start to use it for light gaming or whatever. I think I have the shitty liquid metal thermal paste they had issues with in the early batches.
3. Been seeing a lot of issues that make me think it needs a new motherboard (probably bad thermals from #2, but don't really want to put money in because #1).

My 10 year old E480's battery died so I replaced it with a chink battery (seems legit) and it was running fine. I even installed gentoo with LUKS on it, but now today I booted it and it froze shortly after Xfce4 started, it just completely froze (even picture froze to Xfce4). I shutdown power and power it on -> screen is black but fans do start spinning, nothing happens. Now after few tries even fans won't spin, it kinda powers on somewhat but it's dark and fans don't spin. What the fuck is wrong with it? I plugged it just to charger and let it charge for a while in case the linux battery reading was wrong (it showed 60% when froze).

Linux mostly. I did Windows a little as well, but it ran hotter and caused the fans to spin up loud more often. Before I used a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (Gen 10), which is what I am starting to use again because of the issues. Don't like the limited storage on the X1 and camera doesn't have linux drivers.

No idea on the specifics, the 16 only has AMD cpus (Ryzen 7 7840HS in mine). At least since Windows 11, I've always been seing more background stuff going on and things running ever so slightly worse compared to basically any LInux distro on any PC I have.
