More cultural destruction of the Old Internet
>>108679813>More cultural destruction of the Old Internetwhere will I go for pictures of british titty models from 2003 now
rip
>>108679813Are we going to have a tripod or angelfire backup like geocities had?
Only 30 days?
>>108679813Man, I had no idea Tripod still existed. I made my first personal website in 1999 and they removed it like 5 years later because they were shutting down, I guess they've been shutting down for almost two decades.
>>108679951They kept the pro customers around because those were the corporate customers and the people who cared enogh to make full websites. Unlike geocities where everyone with a pulse made one because it was free and their web builder was dead simple. Angelfire hosted a BUNCH of the old anime internet. I hope it all gets archived.
It's sad to see it go but you couldn't make an angelfire page for a long time, since like 2014 I want to say? I feel bad but hosting a VPS and a LAMP setup is as easy as its ever been if you want to replicate the experience
>>108680053I made one in 2022
>>108679982Not only that but both sites had a treasure trove of gifs, midi files and mods. A few years ago I downloaded several of the Dark Forces DBZ mods from an Angelfire fire page all except a few that were not preserved by Angelfire at that time. I wanted to contact the guy that owned the site to see if had the missing ones like DBZ Half 1.2 Beta 3 but it seems that I won’t get that chance now. There will be a lot of brilliant old mods and projects like that will be lost because of this purge.
>>108679813they haven't shut off their sign-up page yetseems like an oversight if they're shutting down the service
>>108680326Interesting but I seemed to remember the same being the case for Geocities and that a lot of people signed up in the last month to show it could still be popular but that didn’t work.
>>108680326>>108680574They're still harvesting emails. They're gonna sell all their user info.
>>108679813Internet Archive status?
>>108679887Only 1TB of Geocities was actually saved.
>>108680718Probably busy fighting all the lawsuits.Jews are strangling the country and its history to death.
>>108680105Strangely enough even though I’ve had my Angelfire account since then and I’ve been a paying customer they’ve not sent even a single email to me saying that they’re purging everything.
>>108681208I wonder how many people even work at Lycos anymoreI wonder if /g/ could pool our money and buy it, jk we're all neets
>>108680861ye i looked for my old site and it aint there
>>108681343You can’t access any site they all say >Server Not Found
>>108681400somewhere someone is rehosting all the old sites that were saved i forget where
>>108681476>>108681400geocities btw i didn't really read this thread and i see it's about angelfire
>>1086798131. You were warned to archive everything way before any data center nonsense started any crisis2. Build your own Internet culture like your forefathers did instead of being a limp wristed faggot crying to /g/ about muh memes and shieeet
>>108679982>Angelfire hosted a BUNCH of the old anime internet. I hope it all gets archived. It'll all be lost but your heckin' memories won't fade... until the brain disease spreads
>>108681505>1. You were warned to archive everything way before any data center nonsense started any crisisI don’t personally have the resources to archive everything on these sites and I didn’t even know they were being purged as they’ve been online for decades I didn’t imagine they would suddenly decide to purge these sites for no reason.>2. Build your own Internet culture like your forefathers did instead of being a limp wristed faggot crying to /g/ about muh memes and shieeetAngelfire, Tripod, Geocities, Fortune City Xoom and such than “memes”! How much of a zoomtard are you that you think that the soulfull 90’s Internet were just NuInternet meme garbage? They were actual creativity! Unique midi sound files, mod projects and maps, fan pages with actual sound effects that you could download, gifs that were handmade with actual artistic intent and not just clips taken from reality TV to sass people on social media and pages were people expressed their passions in grass roots with actual effort. This was when the Internet was good and not the social media hell it’s turned into.
>>108681670the vast majority of stuff on geocities were either empty websites (just an homepage without anything else) or pre-facebook social pages.
>>108681842my site had images i transloaded from cooltext.com, pictures of cars, and <audioscope> art
>>108681842Not true. I browsed Geocities almost all the time when I was at my boarding school and there was so much good stuff there. I never looked at empty pages or social media most of it was fan pages for cool media, mod pages, pages with awesome gifs and some esoteric occult stuff.Plus as mentioned earlier there are so many old mods and levels as well as midis that have been lost elsewhere that could be found on Angelfire and Tripod that loosing them would be the further loss of truly great content.
When was the last time you saw a link to tripod?
>>108681904Not long ago, I downloaded some cool midi files from a tripod page recently.
>>108681902>Not truehttps://geocities.restorativland.org/
>>108681910You do realise that only 1/8 Terabytes of Geocities was ever saved?
>>108681923
>>108680861unironically elon musk is probably the guy most likely to do something about this. he has the resources to archive angelfire and tripod, so the thing to do would be hit him up on twitter and make a lot of noise. if you can spark his autism it's exactly the sort of thing he would do.
>>108680861>7TB of dancing Jesus gif spam... Gone just like that.
>>108681923And how much duplication was there with the exact same gifs and whatever on gazillion accounts?
>>108681955>Zoomtard only knows about Geocities from memesYeah, as already stated there was a hell of a lot more creative content than that and even the most basic Geocities gif had actual soul behind it unlike modern gifs that are mostly clips from reality tv used to sass people on social media.
>>108681974There are probably countless original gifs and midi files that were never preserved. Not only that but the amount of game levels and mods that were on Geocities now lost is probably equally as staggering.
>>108681945Sounds like a good idea only I don’t have a Twitter account I never used that kind of social media and I’ve hated Twitter since it created this woke activist cancer and it was archived in the Library of Congress in the thousands of terabytes when 1TB of Geocities was ever preserved.
>>108680718I’m not getting my hopes up for Internet Archive as good as they can be they’re not that reliable pages from sites like Geocities, FortuneCity modding sites were lucky if their content got archived even once. Yet someone even the most obscure Wikipedia page are archived thousands of times obsessively.
>>108681990I'm in my 40s. I was there. Most people's web pages were just used to show off all the neat/silly gifs they found. Nothing wrong with it. It was new and exciting. But yeah. It's kind of funny in hindsight.
>>108683666The Gifs that were on Geocities were actual art and worth preserving alone, I wish the Internet was still using those kind of gifs instead of the mindless react gifs that Social Media made popular.
>>108683666agree. most of those websites were made with WYSIWYG editors and bad.
>>108685932No, most of the pages were awesome I spent days browsing Geocities when it was still online and I was finding cool content on Tripod and Angelfire not long ago.
>>108681910So many of those ‘archived’ sites have countless pages missing really shows how poorly Geocities was archived.
>>108681974Can't know the answer to that because they burned it to the ground
Just like every over site on the internet its being 9/11'd by AI scraper bots reading it without looking at the ads. The whole internet will be paywalled by AI for a minimum $200 a month by 2027.
>>108686789>shows how poorly Geocities was archived.shows how no one cared at all, most people had already abandoned their "website" for years.
Every single day I am finding myself with fewer and fewer reasons to keep living
>>108686992>no one cared at allPeople cared, but how do you archive it if you have no resources? Reminder it just went down one day, nobody had physical access to the disks. The stuff that was archived was happenstance. We're ultimately peons hoping some brave noble lord comes to save us because we do not have 1,000,000 to casually throw at archiving and crawling an ancient piece of internet history.
>>108687041same, and it's accelerating by the day. Every day just feels like more and more bad news.
>>108687068>Reminder it just went down one day, yahoo gave six months to people for saving their website. people who still cared moved to tripod.
>>108687109Yahoo was actively blocking people from archiving Geocities because they wanted to culturally purge the old world. They did the same thing with Japanese Geocities, Yahoo Groups and Yahoo Answers.
>>108687041Isn’t that true
>>108681945Kys retard
>>108680861>>108679813Literally who cares about thisWas there anything relevant and useful there? Doubt it. Just let it go.
>>108689137>Literally who cares about thisOnly social media indoctrinated Zoomtards like you don’t care>Was there anything relevant and useful there? Doubt it. Just let it go.Yes, there was you’re just ignorant zoomer garbage who needs E-celebs, woke activism and instant dopamine hits because your brain has been rotted to mush.
>>108687602this, now the jew shills are on /g/ trying to convince us no one cared when Yahoo was actively accelerating the shutdown
>>108689137>Was there anything relevant and useful there? Tons of old anime stuff, if you had an anime website in the late 90's, early 00s, you had an angelfire. It was the professional choice over a geocities.
I'm sad brosWhy did turdies have to get internet access and pollute the web the same way they pollute their own cunts
very sad, it shut down 20 days ago. the more time that passes, the more of the old internet that dies.>>108689137this shit has to be bait
>>108689137You weren't there. You'll never get it. You don't understand what was taken from you. Is that intentional? Honestly I don't know. It seems that way, but it could just be a coincidence.
>>108689126Yo first newfag tourist.
>>108689811I’m sad that so much of the classic Internet has been continuously purged, barley archived at all and replaced with social media garbage. It really is having you loved destroyed and replaced with shit.
>>108681842It was much more honest and competent. The under construction pages are just the memes everyone remembers.
I made a petition is anyone wants to sign it I’m not sure how much of a difference it will make but it’s worth a shot.https://www.change.org/SaveTripodAndAngelfire
>>108693620It’s also the meme used to dismiss this great era of the Internet by the media and journalist who seem to love to mock the actual soulful era of Internet.
>>108680861Grim
>>108680861What do you think of this tribute to Geocities?https://www.cameronsworld.net/
QuestionWhy did Neocities fail?
>>108697314It became infested with troons, which really showed that what we had with Geocities couldn’t be recreated as Nerd culture had been consumed by culture wars, wokeism and troonism. So the nerds that would have made awesome gaming, anime, modding and fan pages back in the 90’s and 2000’s were now making pages about how trans they are. They were more interesting in larping as gurls on the early Internet than making the kind of interesting content that would have been made before. Also the pages were full of links to their trooncord servers and other fucking social media garbage that represents the opposite of the spirit that Geocities embodied. The culture that made Geocities, Angelfire, Tripod, AlterVista and such so great no longer existed it had all be replaced with shit.
>>108697625Was AlterVista ever archived?
>>108698336AltaVista was just a search engine iirc. I suppose crawling and archiving whatever it linked to wouldn't have been a bad idea.Geocities, Tripod, and Angelfire were the three main 'free hosting' places where anyone could throw up a webpage. Each also had their own unique cultures and such as well.
>>108679847On Dailymotion, of course.
>>108681945>>108690709>only a billionaire could archive a couple terabytes of web sites>clueless elon cumgargler calling anyone else a newfagHoly fuck this board is dead.
>>108697314Did it now? It's pretty popular
>>108699766>>only a billionaire could archive a couple terabytes of web sitesAngelfire is MUCH bigger than Geocities ever was
>>108679813What were angelfire and tripod?
>>108701469Imagine being this much of a Zoomer
