Is there any point in getting a new phone if I don't care about gaming? My S22 still runs perfectly fine.
>>
>>108684756
unironically no. an S22 is going to run all goyware just fine. unless you want meaningful improvements to games (which an S24 and especially an S26 would give you) there's no reason to upgrade until your battery starts dying.
>>
>>108684765
I've been eyeing the S25U for a while now, and the AI photo fixer and zoom seem nice, just not extra several hundreds of dollars nice. Also having to migrate all my shit over to a new phone.
>>
>>108684756
i upgraded from my s23u to the s25u recently.
the anti-reflective coating on the s25u is pretty dope for daylight visibility. but you'd have to run without a protector or use samsung's official anti-reflective film to keep its abilities.
also, the phone has a much more accurate and quicker face and fingerprint unlock and the nfc for public transportation gates is significantly faster than on my s23u
>>
>>108684900
>>108684785
>Also having to migrate all my shit over to a new phone.
that was pretty painless IME. the only thing i had to manually move over was my 2FA keys as well as whatsapp. everything else including sideloaded apps where automatically transferred over.
>>
>>108684785
The 100x zoom is a meme. It hallucinates what it thinks is there. Telephoto is good when it is optical and not stupid digital fakescaling.

>>108684756
You still have one year of (quarterly) security updates before the device is EOL. It won't stop working, but it won't be as secure. You could always install Lineage—oops you bought a S22 and not an Exynos S23 which is the only modern Samsung supported by that OS and even then warns you bootloader unlock can be a hassle.

tl;dr you can use it for another year relatively safely, but would be good to consider upgrading at some point.
>>
>>108684756
not really. try to get a phone with better update support next time if you intend on keeping it for a long time doe
i prefer iphones and pixels, but samsungs are ok too.
>>
>>108685477
The 7 year updates only applies to the s24 and newer.
>>
>>108684756
As long as all your apps (especially bank app with its 2FA) work with your version of Android, everything is ok.
>>
>>108684756
I recently finally moved from a Huawei P20 to a Pixel 10 Pro (~7 years difference) and I barely notice any improvements
Seems like smartphones have hit a plateau a while ago, only improvements are in gaming performance (but I'm not a kid who plays games on his phone anymore, except maybe sudoku or croswords once in a while), and camera quality (which was decent enough 10years ago already for a casual like me)
>>
>>108685477
Oh you're right, forgot Samsung improved their update policy.
I still don't like their software tho, it's bloated and the updates come veeery late.

>iPhones become throttled and unusable after 1-2 years of updates
I thought they only did that if the battery health was at like below the 80% mark

>3 year lease/contract
One good thing the CRTC did in Canada was making the max period for contracts 2 years, when it happened everyone on their third year got a "free" upgrade. This was back in 2017. They also made it so all phones had to be unlocked from the factory (SIM Unlock, but this also meant all Pixels in Canada can be bootloader unlocked too unlike Verizon in the US) among other things.

As someone just upgrading from a CMF Phone 1 to an X8 Pro Max, I don't see there being any true point to it no.

Anything non-gaming/3D runs on any cheap phone processor absolutely perfectly now, 8GB of ram or even less than that runs just about any standard non-intensive application without complaints. Hell I'm sure my Realme 8 Pro from 4 years ago would be absolutely fine for day to day use, I just get a real itch to upgrade every 2 years because I always buy cheap phones so selling one covers most of the cost of the next one, plus the performance creeps up just a little. This time the performance has lept up massively for emulation/3D but thats about it, theres no day to day reason to upgrade, I think my biggest "reasons" to upgrade are
>I want to test out how feasible it is to hook up my phone to a large monitor and use it for running emulated fighting games
>I want to benchmark emulator performance
>I want to stream PC games to my phone on my local network at a full 60fps
My CMF phone actually almost handled the last one, but the drops below 60 felt especially bad so I'm hoping the massive upgrade in processing power will solve it.

TLDR upgrading is actually pointless for normal reasons, but theres fun to be had if you're bored/unemployed
>>
>>108686637
Nice. You have plenty of options for the OS you run, ranging from the latest stable PixelOS, 16QPR beta, 17QPR beta, LineageOS or /e/OS, GrapheneOS...I have the 10 Pro and while it is the "latest and greatest" it means there are less options for now.

>>
>>108686923
You don't always have your wallet on you? Do you have digital ID in your jurisdiction?

If you drive a car, you have to have at least a license on you at least for now, and cash is even harder to track. Sometimes, you can only pay with cash like bar service at this one place I go to concerts at. So not having a wallet or a card to access the ATM would be hella inconvenient. Leaving my house without wallet/keys/phone/headphones is pretty unthinkable for me.

that's fair, you should always have ID with you though, citizen. Do you keep it in a bag because it's likely to be stolen? I usually keep my minimal wallet in my front pocket for this reason. If your wallet is too big and cumbersome (Costanza wallet with receipts) I would recommend looking into more minimal options that force you to carry less, I've settled on this "micro" one from Slimfold but also have liked the cardholder metal ones I've had in the past like Ridge, although they're not as good for cash as the Slimfold. Walletopia does really good reviews.

There's really only a handful of unoptimized games that aren't going to run at max settings on any current phone at a consistent 60fps at native resolution like the Mihoyo games (and Wuthering Waves)

how to source a phone cheaply overseas? I have a model in mind, but all shops are either crazily upcharged or unavailable. An anon gave me a site that cross references many merchants before, sadly I have lost the link
>>
>>108687752
Depends on what country. "Overseas" could mean literally any country to any other country.

>>108687727
Samsung wants to be Apple so bad. They never really had unlockable bootloader, only on some international models. The only ROMs you can flash after breaking KNOX/Google Pay/etc are "debloated" versions of the stock ROM because Samsung has proprietary VoLTE making LineageOS essentially impossible. So that's not a huge loss for users.
>>
>>108687799
The font shit is ghey tho. Especially when Samsung has their own system font but as it's called "Default" in settings, other apps will default to Roboto. I don't care about "muh security". It should be up to me if I want to take the risk of downloading a 3rd party font.

That's the first thing I did, the reason why I got a pixel in the first place
Don't know what I was expecting, mostly improvements in battery life and cool new features
I was due for a change and while doing my research for a replacement there was no phone that truly seemed to stand out from the others, apart from performances seems like most phones nowadays are all exactly the same
>>
>>108685319
That new snapdragon throttles so hard the OnePlus 13 and S25 Ultra beat it's newer versions. That's innovation I guess.
>>
>>108687824
Well the font is on the system, you just can't make OneUI use it. It's probably a case of Samsung wanting the user to see a Samsung and instantly know it's a Samsung, same reasoning behind the whole OneUI skin of the quick toggles/etc.

>>108688350
Congrats I hope you like it. Without GMS constantly pinging your location for advertising purposes you *should* see improvement in battery life. Of course if you always run a profile with Play Services constantly running this will be more or less moot. I have a FOSS profile and a Proprietary profile that I use when I n33d a Play Store app that won't run without it. You can unload a secondary profile so it is completely not running.
>>

>buys a 7 year old phone in 2024
Mad respect for povertymaxxing.
>what (camera) phone should I get
Pixel 10 Pro (XL for sizemaxxing) takes the most natural photos due to the processing by the Google camera app, Samsung sometimes makes photos look unreal with their processing which is a bit too colorful. iPhone (17 Pro/Max) takes good photos and is usually praised for video, but Google has a video enhancer which processes the video on their servers (which takes time and data up/down) which can lead to good results.

So if you care mostly about photos, Pixel is your best bet, with video enhancement being a bonus. But if you take mostly video an iPhone is a better bet.

Make sure you get a model with a telephoto lens, it makes a world of difference for capturing subjects when you can't get close. Don't fall for 100x AI "zoom" but regular 10x zoom is super underrated.

Similar size would be nice, my only real requirement is the ability to run some kind of decent desktop environment and not get cucked by google when they decide to start locking Android down.

To be fair to Apple, they said the point of "throttling" some older phones was to enable better battery life. I think the "throttling" only kicked in for phones which had degraded batteries. Also I think you could disable the "throttling" in the phone's settings (pic related). Source for pic: https://support.apple.com/en-us/101575

Don't get me wrong, I strongly dislike Apple for a few reasons (high prices, terrible repairability, soldered RAM, soldered SSDs). But in this case I think people just wanted to believe in a conspiracy theory ("Apple is secretly throttling old phones to make you buy a new one!") rather than look at the actual reasons for the phenomenon. It's like how tons of people still believe the moon landings were faked.

Why are all phones basically small tablets these days

There's no creativity or innovation in mobile devices anymore, they're all the same. Sometimes they move the cameras around but that's about it lol
>>
>>108695268
There are a few reasons why phones are basically tablets now. People, particularly in the third world but many around the globe only use one computing device—their phone. When you are consuming media on your phone you want a decently sized screen.

Second, smol phones require custom engineering and tooling, which is expensive. Combined with the fact that phones like the iPhone 12/13 Mini had poor sales means there's less incentive for manufacturers to even try.

There are a couple interesting phones with keyboards like the Clicks Communicator and some models from Unihertz, but it's just easier to make the same basic design as every other phone.
>>
Everything is so fucking expensive now.
£1000 for a phone (£279 off).
£40 for a case.
£50 for a qi2 charger.
£13 for screen protectors.
Least I get a free pair of Galaxy 4 buds to listen to YouTube and make calls.

My POCO X3 is shitting the bed, specifically the charging has gotten fucky with weirdly low pull or straight up connecting and disconnecting from charging by itself. No amount of trying to clean the port with isopropyl or air has done shit, so I suppose it's just software killing itself or some weird oxidation I can't reach and fix easily.

It sucks because this bitch has been serving me well for 6 years now but all the new POCOs don't seem like great deals altogether.
I've been eyeing the X7 Pro rather than the X8 Pro but since I never play vidya on this shit I wonder if I should just get the budget M8 pro at this point.

Anyone have any experience to share with these phones or some recommendation? Since the last phone did well by me I don't really want to change brands.

Galaxy has to do more work because it's emulating, more work means more heat, more heat means it'll inevitably hit a thermal limit and crash in order to save the phone from melting. Same applies to the OnePlus 15.

different phone but i also had problems with charging.

you cant reliably clean the charging port with compressed air and alcohol alone, you need something very thin like a hypodermic needle or toothpick broken in such a way that one side is very thin (regular toothpick cant reach bottom of usbc port without damaging it). you need to scrape the port with that. mine looked clean to the naked eye, but it was full of hardened dust. look at your port, if it isnt silver metalic in color at the bottom you probably need to clean it

100% incorrect they even stated that the iPhone ran warmer than the Galaxy. you don't know what you're talking about and you're just posting your opinion which is not the actual facts. Here's the truth, the new Snapdragon overheats throttles and crashes all the time and the a19 pro does not simple as. My rm 11 pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max do not crash, but my OnePlus 15 does. This means without proper cooling the Qualcomm chip can't even run a simple benchmark or game and gets stressed out.

Yeah you don't want to use anything metal. Plastic or wood toothpicks usually do the trick for me. Gotta repeat the process sometimes.

>>108697008
Yeah I want to get a Qi2 charger, just more convenient, I've had magsafe ones in the past and they were nice. Can't believe Samsung didn't add magnets to S26 series, probably due to the Ultra and the S-pen.

Android question: I have a webradio app that I use to listen to music, Problem is: If I press the "pause" button on my headphones, it seems that after a minute or two, the paused app disappears from the lock-screen as it's not playing any more and android no longer considers it relevant. This then causes the pause button on my headphones to no longer be able to un-pause the music, forcing me to fish out my phone, unlock it and manually press play in the app again. Is there a way to prevent this, so that when I have to talk to someone, I can pause it without worrying that I can't start it again?

Second Issue: When I'm in a discord call on that phone, and I turn on music at the same time, my mic quality for the other person goes down the shitter. Everything's fine on my end, multi tasking works fine on the phone, the ducking makes it so that the music isn't too loud, just apparently my audio on the other end sounds like I'm under water.

The only reason to upgrade electronics is if some apps don't work with the old ones. Example: I recently got a new phone, because discord did run on the old one, but it was problematic as shit. If someone answered a voice call with their camera on, neither of us could hear each other. Tons of undelivered messages, app straight up crashing etc. So I upgraded.
I'm about to upgrade from my old Kindle fire tablet as well, because the android version is so fucking ancient (android 5.1) that even a bunch of the manga readers (which is what I use it for) now refuse to even install on the device.
I don't know what tablet to get instead, tho. So if anyone has good android tablet recommendations that don't break the bank, hit me with it, before I go over to cheap chink shit.

Tim Cook's legacy

>Introduced the world's first $1000 smartphone
>Introduced the world's most expensive 60hz smartphone
>Created the iPhone pocket
>Created a $1500 VR headset that can't play games
>Took away the headphone jack
>Took away the home button
>Took away fingerprint sensor
>Took away simcard trays in the US
>Created giant forehead notch obscuring screen on top of phones
>Created giant pill shaped holes in phones
>Gave presents to Trump twice even though he didn't need to do that
>Disabled ICE tracking app from app store
>Made Siri unusable

Apple was always shit, but it's a good thing he's stepping down.

No other phone company does this.

>Also I think you could disable the "throttling" in the phone's settings (pic related).
They only added this option after they got sued.

Tim Cook led Apple to surpass Qualcomm with the A19 Pro and M chips. When am I gonna be able to control the throttling on my snapdragon phones?

No android company could ever even match this level of dominance. No wonder the baker and other apple haters are so mad in the thread. Truth hurts.

Holy shit Apple sucks.

I haven't had an s-pen since the Note 3 and I never really used it. Would be helpful to have the magnets, but there are tons of cases on the market with them anyway.
Should be getting my S26 ultra tomorrow.

>>108700407
I literally bought a case for my S25U without knowing they had those magnets until I tested out a magsafe charger. Had me pleasantly surprised

phones are expensive if you exclusively buy flagships. they don't have to be if you buy older or midrange ones
