Zoomer here, what can I do with a very old PC? It runs Windows 7 and it has a dogshit cpuSome thoughts>using it as a retrogaming/whatever box>file/whatever server (It checks off the suggested requirements for ubuntu server)>disassembling it/learning how2solderanything else?
>>108685634Check power draw first. Then your elecricity prices. Claculate how much you will pay for it idling for a year. If it's the same as buying a new device with equivalent compute, then put it in a box and sotre it somewhere if you can. Do not throw away old computers.By the way, how old is it?
>>108685669must be around 20yo it has an Athlon X2 6000+
>>108685634install gentoo
>>108685750Value it has is being free of Intel ME and AMD's equivalent. It started spreading in 2006, gradually over some years. Most computers in 10's were IntelMEd, past 2015 it is nearly impossible to get rid of that, involves flashing chips on your MB over SPI or UART.
>>108685753Actually not a bad advice if OP cares about making the most out of it.
>>108685753I'm already using linux on my primary PC anyway, however the idea is actually decent, I can try Linux From Scratch for instance, that pc is still just ewaste but I can do something with it at least
Do an XP/7/Gentoo triple boot
>>108685634When age verification becomes universal. You can sell yours as glowie proof computing device.
>>108685634>it has a dogshit cpuupgrade it, old cpus sell for for pennies so you can easily get a big upgrade for cheap
>>108687199Not worth the postage
>>108685634I turned mine into an HTPC with Kodi that also doubles as a file server, torrent server and retro gaming console.I think using it as just a file server is a bit of a waste because why not just buy more storage for your main PC atp.
>>108687199he could buy 10 of them with what those 6000s sell for now
>>108685750>it has an Athlon X2 6000+Holy shit that's as good as gold.See>>108685763>Value it has is being free of Intel ME and AMD's equivalent. This is hobbyist/aficionado equipment now.
>>108685634>file/whatever serverThat's what I use one of my old laptops for, mainly for hosting movies and TV shows. I also use it as a VPN when I'm away from home and want to connect to the internet through my home network. Planning to move my music library there, too, once I sort through it. Had a few hiccups in the beginning, but I'm enjoying it enough that one of these days I'll set one up with real hardware and more storage.
>>108685634>very old>runs Windows 7now *I* am the one feeling very old
>>108685634landfill itrecycle it
>>108685634install openbsd or freebsd on it and learn some stuff
