I wanted to duoboot Linux with my Mac mini m1, is Asahi a meme or is it usable? I Even thought about selfhosting with it, maybe it’s a bad idea and I should stick with MacOs?
>>108689221>already have a rock solid unix OS>want to dual boot linus torvalds' crappy janky temu unix on it...why?
>>108689221it's somewhat functional but I would stick with mac os and try to make it usable
>>108689243Because you actually control the software in instead of the software controlling you? Because it actually respects you as a user? Because it doesn't limit your freedoms?Do you have no spine?

>>108689328>>108689335Can i look at its source code? Can I modify it and compile it as I want to? Can I distribute identical copies or modified copies?Yeah I don't think so

It is not true, it only respects corpos and they make all the decisions, they don't care about you, Linux Desktop is a meme. Always have been, always will be. Because you don't pay for it. And all the "unpaid employee" are 3-letter agency stooges from all over the world competing who shoves more backdoors in. You're stupid if you can't see it.

>>108689221>>108689328I just want to know if I can rice MacOS. No one's giving me a clear answer. And I don't mean "can I use a tiling window manager", I mean can I turn down those insanely rounded corners and use a different UI theme?
>>108689221Apple m1 is pretty slow.Wait for m5 mini, much more powerful.Linux has worse software support than fucking ARM macOS.You will learn to like macOS, it's real UNIX.You can block connections to apple servers
>>108692351yeah you can it's just nobody really bothers with it because all the complaining about it are larps, sour grapes, and virtue signaling.
>>108692351Not that you can't, just that some of the tools that actually can get it to look different (like you said changing rounded corners into something more square looking) requires disabling SIP and nobody fucking does that. And just like microshit an upgrade to system files gets rid of your customization.
>>108692847Oh I see. Yeah I'm autistic enough to maintain a shell script to automatically patch system files.
It’s hilarious how all these Linux shills don’t even know that you aren’t required to use any apple services or login with an apple account. You can even turn off the guardrails that apple has on default for normies. Terminal and package managers work. Anything beyond that isn’t within the scope of anyone on /g/. I’d really like to know what can’t be done on a Mac.
>>108689221Asahi is a dead meme. The only dev of it shat himself profoundly because people told him that he will never be a real anime girl.
>>108689221works fine. read the wiki for specific hardware support info.
>>108689243MacOS is unplayable.Just horrid UI that doesn't make any sense at all.I will never understand how iToddlers were convinced that MacOS has better UI that Windows 10.That being said, if they fail to fix all the issues with win11 like the nigger react and such in core utilities, I will go Linux on desktop (already do on laptop) when w10 ltsc iot isn't feasible

>>108689221>is Asahi a meme or is it usable?Asahi is a memeJust stay on macOS
>>108689254>m-m-muh operating system is freedom!this will never not be fucking retarded.
>>108696843>aren’t required to use any apple services or login with an apple account.its weird that this is rarely brought upyou can still install kernel modules too. ZFS works fine and you can attach a SAS backplane too.you can even fuck around with the pf firewall and do some routing like on pfsensewireguard being userspace is a massive pain in the ass thoughwindows is fine but not having access to more serious filesystems is a drawback for me as as someone who used to be a windows "power user"
>>108696843Honestly using linux as my main OS, I think this particular bias is caused by the barrier of entry (apple hardware) and the current UI.I've seen people you'd think would be pretty tech savvy have trouble with a simple fucking thing like changing shortcuts in macOS if they just don't like the defaults. The thing a lot of people don't seem to understand is that this is how this system has been working for decades. Obviously they'd follow on their standards, not Microsoft's, and they've been slowly adapting things that everyone agrees should be there (window snapping wasn't added until recently purely due to patenting issues). Because it's primarily sold to people who aren't tech savvy but are willing to spend money, a lot of software for it that turns the OS into something really fucking useful and makes things like file management a breeze, or adds shit everyone would want in any OS, comes behind a GUI and a paywall as well. The reason why linux doesn't get as criticized for Windows users is that 1. It's free and 2. there's less resistance when it comes to using the OS as if it was windows (KDE plasma/Cinnamon are desktop environments for Windows users, period). Also it's still more malleable. One of the problems I find with linux is the still ongoing nonsense between x11 and wayland, but both existing means nothing regarding my "low resolution" (1440p) displays get compromised in any way (I have a way of enabling HDR, I have fractional scaling, I can use the max refresh rate supported by my monitor). I can be a power user in macOS but all I have is integer scaling and I can very much go fuck myself, unless I buy the kind of monitor Apple thinks is best. There's no application that fixes this, BetterDisplay only offers a bit of a better solution. I can't just add fractional scaling to macOS.
>>108689254>>108689443you sound like a massive faggot
>>108689221It's less a meme and more of an enthusiast gimmick, it's literally meant to eventually upstream everything and stop existing, so naturally, the fact it hasn't done this yet means Linux on Apple silicon is not ready yet.

>>108701309they said n100 is 8W but it's 25W actually, never trust intel
>>108689221Yeah nah mate, don't do that
>>108701333ayymd is terrible at power efficiency, which usually doesn't matter but does matter when you want to have it on 24/7 for years on end (ie self hosting)ayymd is also becoming the more expensive option of late, probably worth it for gayming since x3d is great but incel has been dropping decent stuff at great prices for everything else of late
>>108701191he's kinda right tho, linux is almost entirely corpo-driven as of the last few years and it's pretty hard not to notice what gets prioritized isn't what joe schmo with a linux desktop would prioritizein many ways it's the golden age of linux - it's finally good enough to use as your main OS, gayming works seamlessly 90% of the time and it hasn't even begun enshittifying and pushing offensive corposlop. but it IS coming, and likely sooner than most realize. probably won't be an issue finding good distros without it for a while, but random nerds will always lose with billion dollar industries paying codeniggers full time to develop what they want first and foremost, and push it upstream
Truth nuke: there's no point in any OS other than macOS for personal computers anymore and the only reason for it is that the Claude desktop app with code and cowork etc is made primarily for Mac. It's the future whether you like it or not
weird thread.>a bunch of people who've never used macos or asahi recommend macos
