Youtube started aggressively blocking instances and AI scrapers started DDOSing instances. So that meant they needed beefy hosting infrastructure, good DDOS protection, and an IP rotation system to keep the instances operational. This killed 99% of public instances because most of the operators didn't have the infrastructure for that.
