Why not a NAS with 2.5Gb+ Ethernet at that point?

a small bump is all it takes for you to loose all of that data but sure, I bet a retard like you has proper backups... surely...

I was debating on NAS, but I do occasionally travel, which is a use case handled by NAS. I do actually have a NAS somewhere in my home, but I can't be bothered to go through and shuck these drives to load it up. Realistically, these drives are going to spend 99% if their life at my desk.
>>
relevant thread to my interests.
I'll be in Greenland for a few months soon, and I need some 1-2TB external drive... should I just get a Samsong T9 and be done?

Yes we get it, you’re storing ‘p.
>>
I've never figured out why people think they need so much data stored. I literally have months of compressed satellite imagery stored on my hard drive and it fits in less than 100 MiB.
Just zip your files or something.

Why would I want that much portable storage?

I have a 500GB T7 and two 1TB T7s for when I need to move shit around quickly.

Bulk data is stored on non-portable drives.
>>
>>108695981
why spend hundreds of dollars on a NAS device and not just sticking the drives in your desktop PC?
>>
>>108696261
Because you might want to access the storage somewhere else other than at your desktop.

A dedicated NAS is generally better for 24/7 reliability, data redundancy, energy efficiency, and low-maintenance file sharing, while using a PC as a storage server can consume more power and requires higher active upkeep.

no, but it's a way for people to not completely lose everything. Not everyone can afford a cold storage solution like LTO.
>inb4 offsite backups
defeats the purpose of self-storing.
>>
>>108696723
>it's a way for people to not completely lose everything
...how exactly does raid help you not completely lose everything the moment you accidentally delete something, or the power supply in your nas goes bang, or your entire filesystem or something acks itself? ransomwares also exist, raid protects you against disk failure and nothing else.
>the only way to have a proper backup is LTO
...nigga what
>offsite backups defeats the purpose of self-storing
well not having a proper backup strategy defeats the purpose of storing
>>

>>

>>
>>108697043
There's nothing wrong with usb external drives. 120 mbps is all you need for this type of storage. You don't play games off of them.
>>
>>108697043
as opposed to? usb C external drives?
what difference does the connector type make, are you retarded?
>>

1. You'd need to be a retard to get one on your nas
2. zfs snapshots.
>>

...sure
but that has nothing to do with the speed and you still haven't explained how the two things are related
>>
>>108697123

Those 5TB 2.5" HDDs are a horror show reliability wise, don’t go above 4TB in that form factor
>>
>NAS is for 24/7
>HDD used 24/7 will die after a few years, even if unused, due to mechanical parts
nas is a silly idea for most people, just plug in the drive when needed
if you want a nas splurge on ssd, those will last you a lifetime and without all the clickity clacks
>>
>>108699646
most hard drive stress is from power cycles though
>>
>>108699646
>those will last you a lifetime
OR 6 months.
You can write to an HDDs platters indefinitely, so long as the mechanical components still work. And if it stops working and you want to erase the data just run a big ass magnet back and forth on it.
But SSDs have a finite number of writes per cell, once you hit that number, it's read-only from then on and you won't even be able to delete your furry porn from it either.
>>
>>108699759

I had one 2.5" WD 5TB fail last year. Luckily all it had on it was pirated anime which was easily replaced.
>>
any storage can be portable if you're brave enough
>>
>>108699834
Is there data storage that isn’t portable? Even weird shit like tapes are mobile, it’s the tape reader that takes up space
you might not want to carry around a 3.5" drive in your pocket but it’s not all that large, even the average noodle arms gtard could easily carry twenty of those

>>

>You can write to an HDDs platters indefinitely, so long as the mechanical components still work.
that's a pretty big catch you know...
>ssds have a finite number of writes per cell, once you hit that number
which is like 2 petabytes of writes for most ssds, impossible to reach in actual use, you won't even get anywhere close to that
>it's read-only from then on
(if you're extremely lucky)
>and you won't even be able to delete your furry porn from it either
literally just break the nand chips in half, or throw the controller (which contains the encryption key) away, I don't understand why you're acting as if it's impossible to delete data from an ssd once broken, can't tell if it's satire honestly.
big magnets don't erase hdds either btw

I think I should retire it in the summer even though it works.

explain to me how 000000000000 becomes 200 because i am stupid
>>
>>108707006
I don't know how to read these properly. I will ask the robot.
>That's actually good news. On WD drives the SMART attribute value works inversely — 200 is the best possible score, meaning zero reallocated sectors. It's just WD's way of reporting it, different from Seagate which shows the raw count directly.
>So your WD Black has no reallocated sectors despite its age and hours, which is impressive. The concern with that drive is purely its age and hours, not bad sectors.
>>
>>108707193
I need to put some more instructions to the machine. For some reason I don't like it when it says by itself

>>
>>108707006
The "Current", "Worst", and "Threshold" values reported by S.M.A.R.T. are normalized qualitative values, that is they don't indicate the actual number of sectors, etc. Instead, they are intended to indicate "how good" or "how bad" that metric's value is on a scale.
you are literally looking at completely irrelevant metrics that have no effect on the actual reallocated sector count (which is 0).
