You have to consider what "data" is to avoid being targeted by whatever you're concerned about.

Say you make a gmail account with your real name and details, and use that account to sign up for twitter, youtube, facebook etc. Anything you do with that gmail is linkable to "you", and as such becomes "data" that can be sold and used to advertise and condition you.
Now say you don't make a gmail, but sign up to youtube, facebook and twitter with different emails and names? Well if you used the same conputer browser with the same cookies from the same IP address, its likely that those will all still be linked together to sell you products and send content that is algorithmically tuned to you. This is done via primarily via scanning device/browser cookies, browser fingerprinting (screen resoluion, language settings, extensions installed, settings enabled, theming settings etc) IP address tracking, logging and comparison of email addresses, known recovery email addresses etc. To truly be private and avoid surveillance you have to use a completely detached system running a browser that strictly doesn't allow you to be fingerprinted when you visit websites and preferably from an IP address not linked to you financially in any way (like a mullvad VPN paid for in tumbled crypto or anonymous postage with money in).


I think you should look into TailsOS first, the reading material they provide is useful for understanding how state and surveillance actors profile and target individuals and how anyone can be tracked in the first place. Qubes in properly educated hands is probably the most powerful anti-surveillance system ever released to the public, but TailsOS is easily superior if you aren't very knowledgeable as its designed to keep you safe.
