Zorin if you don't particularly care about anything other than usability.
Mint if you dislike snaps. (This is what I use and I would also recommend this over Zorin if you don't have Nvidishit in your PC)
Cachy if you have a life but are also open to tinkering.

Everything else is for niche preferences or use-cases.

Pick the distro that has the logo you like the most and then just use KDE plasma.

That's what 99% of linux users do. There is no "best" distro. Any distro is basically as good as any other distro.

I personally wouldn't recommend KrashDE. That said for high DPI, Wayland is the only option and only GNOME and KDE on the bleeding edge have that down, with Adaptive Sync and HDR support. You could just use Cachy, but personally I would use Zorin with the Liquorix kernel and Ernstp mesa driver.

Gentoo is the old way of doing a source-based distro. The objectively best distro is Guix. Declarative, transactional, etc etc. With a metaprogramming language unlike Nix's trash language.

I didn't put a lot of thought into picking a distro, I had a second ssd in my PC that I wasn't using for much and I wanted to try out Linux. I picked Bazzite because it was similar to steamOS and I was told it played relatively well with Nvidia, and because it was 'the gaming distro'. In practice though I've ended up using it for everything besides gaming and I still boot into Windows for that.

I was trying to download a program to try and recover some deleted files from an external ssd...test-drive or something like that. I'm not at the computer right now. But I was having a hard time getting it.

Arguable. I'd say GNU runs the internet. Linux is just one of the kernels used by GNU. Either way it doesn't change Guix being the objective best distro in existence.
