Recently got my hands on a budget Samsung A16 5G phone, beautiful 90Hz 1080p OLED display. Thought I'd help out other poorfags here concerned about 1080p AV1 video battery life concerns.

The results are an estimated 8-10 hours of 1080p AV1 playback for the A16 5G.

The 1080p AV1 test file in question is 10-bit but low bitrate (~1 Mbps) so it's balanced for software playback. 82 minute movie source is TPB AFK and because it was released with a creative commons license it means I can legally share it with you. It's not just a free movie btw, it made Hollywood kikes furious, so I highly recommend you watch it.

8-10 hours isn't anywhere near H.264 video playback battery life but it's usable. Phones/tablets using anything older than the Cortex A78 CPU are going to suffer significant battery drain problems with AV1. So it seems like the A78 is the low bar, at least for 1080p AV1 10-bit video. You might get away with weaker CPUs than this if you drop down to 8-bit AV1 but color banding will be an issue.
>>
If anyone is curious about this AV1 rip, I used SVT-AV1, preset 4 and crf 50. It took about 8 hours (~5 FPS) to encode on my i5-9500T and scored 81 VMAF (medium quality) compared to the original 12 Mbps H264 piratebay release. So while the bar for decoding AV1 video has been dropped tremendously you still need Zen 3 or later if you want realtime preset 4 encoding speed.

On a related note after doing AV1 encodes for a while I've been able to subjectively map VMAF scores like this:
Medium quality: 80-85
High quality: 85-90
Very high quality: 90-95

Anything above that is a waste of space and anything below that is dogshit quality. Normally AV1 has no problem reaching VMAF 80-85 at or below 500 kbps for most 1080p video but TPB AFK movie was really grainy which is why it struggled even at 1 Mbps.

Why do you have 10 fast food apps.

I live near a mall with like a 100 fast food stores and often one of them will have something on sale and I'll get that instead of cooking steak or whatever. Unwanted side effect is jeet scammers call me like 10 times a day, probably because signing up for these things means they sell your data to anyone.

I have an iPhone and I don’t think about any of that. I watch YouTube.

That's what the kikes want. Don't think about Epstein/underground tunnels in New York...

I don't understand why my pixel 4a (snapdragon 730g, about 15% slower than OP's exynos 1330) struggles with 10 bit 1080p 30 fps, 1080p25 would already drop frames and cause the cpu to run at 100% usage
>inb4 try fast decode
barely helps, and i'm running mpvkt with the yuv420p thingy enabled
everyone else seems to have no issues whatsoever with similarly specced devices, weird.
Just tried with OP's encode and it's quite a bit better than my encodes (probably because lower bitrate/less movement compared to the stuff i'm encoding) but still a bit choppy and the A76 cluster is almost constantly at full speed.

Your player might be using an outdated Dav1d decoder. Try VLC.

a16 is an ok phone, it's not the greatest thing in the world, being a smarphone, especially a west-friendly one, but as far as those go, it's pretty solid and unpretentious
>>
>>108705822
vlc ran at like 1 fps
tried with regular mpv and that made no difference, actually it seems even worse.

WTF is that image? I always watch files downloaded from pirate sites. Is this some campaign to smear the reputation of based pirates? It takes no effort to make streamer fags look like fools.
Kiker.

Google might be throttling your phone, that's why I stick why Samsung. Apple got caught throttling the shit out of older iPhones and it seems that other phones companies are doing what they do best and copy Apple.

I mostly got it because of the 90Hz OLED so web browsing doesn't feet so janky, hard to find that in budget phones. Gaming definitely blows but it's good thing I outgrew mobile gaming in general, just fucks up your hands and destroys your sleep schedule.

>>108705924
I meant it as self deprecating humor. Part of the reason why I'm so obsessed with image/video compression is because I want to have lots of stuff but not everything has a hard drive slot (ie my phone) and AV1 lets me use limited space more efficiently.

>Google might be throttling your phone
first of all, that's a battery capacity limit, not a performance throttle
second, i'm running a custom rom and I've got a non affected battery, google sent me a new old stock 4a when this happened and mine started swelling.
so no, nothing to do with that.
>>
>>108706373
>implying samsung has never had battery issues
kekw, not only the note 7 fiasco but pretty much all samsung phones are known to eventually swell if left unused in storage https://youtu.be/OfM0GqsIB6c
samsung isn't on your team pal, all of these are massive corporations selling shitty overpriced electronics, stop shilling shit.

so 5Ah phones have better performance than 3Ah phones?

like power tools????

poorfags are the backbone of the adoption of anything. Cars only became a thing when even the burger flipper could amass enough wealth for one. Same thing with video codecs which explains why H.264 just won't die.

Your pixel 4a uses a 3Ah battery but the Samsung A16 5G uses a 5Ah battery. I'm wondering if that makes a difference in performance because it does in battery power tools.

Nah, I'm dead serious. I have a theory that phone performance is tied to battery capacity, at least to some extent. Like maybe we could all get desktop performance on phones if manufacturers stopped being cowards, used 10 Ah batteries, and active cooling...
