what's the appeal of gentoo?

>>108707725>No dependency on SystemDOne of the few major distros that doesn't come bundled with systemD. You can still choose to use it but you're not forced, which is a major upside. >USE flagsGentoo's flagship (heh) feature, it allows you to turn features on and off either on a per package basis, or on a system-wide one. It's both the ultimate debloat weapon and a major tool for adding more features to your system.Your system is debloated because it gets build with minimal dependencies. For example, every package will not support bluetooth unless you specify it. This is great for a PC that you had no intention of connecting a bluetooth device to. However, it is also a noob trap, since if you installed Gentoo on a laptop without it, then realized you wanted to use its bluetooth capabilities, you have to recompile every package that supports bluetooth. However, it also allows you to unlock "hidden" features that package managers have disabled. For example, tmux has sixel support, but it's not enabled by default. If you want to, you can build tmux with USE="sixel" to enable it on your system. This is done seamlessly with Gentoo's package manager. On another distro, you would have to find the tmux source, manually download the dependencies, find the build config script and enable the relevant sixel line, etc.

>>108707725assuming this is a good faith question, it Just Works. it simply does not break, which is really just a testament to how good Portage is. between>main repo>binhost>guruthere's all the packages you'll need. if none of those have something, check out other people's overlays. if they don't have what you need, make your own git repo with the software you need. if there's a .deb of it you can whip up an ebuild for itgentoo is great because it requires very little maintenance. and when you do need to do something off the beaten bath, it's relatively simple to doalso great community, great wiki
>>108708611>when you do need to do something off the beaten bath, it's relatively simple to dothats a nice selling point if true, on deb everything works and you have an entire ecosystem to work with, but it can be a pain if you start "fighting" the system to do hacky things. i think the idea is that they work so you dont need to.
>>108708436slang for mary jew wanna
>>108707881i think i can do that with nixos except the mandatory systemd
>>108708667it's of course not as plug and play as debian. but yes, I don't have to fight with Gentoo because if I want to do something odd (which isn't that often) it doesn't get in the way.remember it's a "meta-distribution". when you've been around Linux enough to know what you want, no other distro comes close to Gentoo, because Gentoo doesn't have opinions about what your stack is. i'm using OpenRC, systemd-boot, xfs, KDE Plasma. i have X11 globally disabled. you can use literally whatever combination of things you want

>>108708756>when you've been around Linux enough to know what you want, no other distro comes close to Gentooi can't argue against that, even though i've been around for quite a while. looking from here, gentoo seems like a great project, that will let your explore beyond what you thought possible. im aware of how our devs are opinionated too, but most of the time i dont disagree with their reasoning, and for now im more than happy with deb's netinstall to choose build from.
>>108707725It makes incels feel special
>>108707725Source based distro. Problem is it is imperative and you got to compile most everything even though they started offering binary packages. The amount of bins available is small.Declarative distros like Guix improve on this model by being reproducible and actually offers binaries to all the packages so you aren't wasting your fucking time.
>>108709939Sounds too good, whats the catch on Guix?
>>108710052Just like NixOS, you have to learn a complex, domain specific language just to manage your declarative OS and it doesn't even try to be POSIX.

>>108710120Scheme is simple/elegant and general purpose. Nix lang is complex and domain specific.
