it's one of many metrics to test if you're a human. bots don't care if the image is 1% transparency or 100% they'll choose the correct option immediately, otherwise they need to add a delay which at least slows them down. humans have to wait for it to be distinguishable.

The one I don't get is the one where they ask you to click on something that isn't there. The correct response is to select "skip" at the bottom, but the skip button is only there if the thing you're asked to click on isn't there. That is, if the skip button is there, you can just click on it without checking the images because they'll never contain what's being asked for. A bot would only have to see if the skip button is there, which seems super easy to make it do. Are they just checking if you're response time is supernaturally fast?
