I don't know if it's tryhard so much as it scratches a certain itch. Once you know how to use it, it doesn't doesn't box you in like distros where certain decisions have been made for you and it's not really all that hard to maintain assuming you're updating fairly regularly.
I used it for a time and really enjoyed it for what it is. But end of the day I need things to just work with minimal configuration or wait times.
