I don't understand all the controversy with hardware prices, specially GPUs.
Yes, it is more costly than it used to be, but at the same time you're getting the best experience, and there are cheaper options that also won't deny you of a good experience.
Not to mention that future proof is better than it has ever been. Someone who has a 5090 will get at least 7 years worth out of it, whereas a decade ago, a flagship graphics card was already outdated in 2 years.
We're living in the best of times.

mostly school kids that are sad they can't get high end components from their parents because they're already tapped for money. even a mcjob can afford a 5090 and 128gb of ram and the latest gen gaming cpu with two weeks of work.

Anon, that's between $580 and $1436 if you're working full-time.

The controversy? There's no controversy. People don't want to pay more for mid GPUs at ever increasing prices when that isn't the norm. Apple keeps flinging more silicon at lower and lower prices despite the shortages. But Nvidia and AMD won't.

Nobody can rule out that it will be the case again two years from now. Past performance is not an indication of future results yadda yadda.

It's kind of the principle more than the money. It feels morally wrong to pay what, 4x the price for something.
I'm sure you can get on some libertarian high horse about supply and demand, but it's still pretty shitty.
>>
>>108716430
Thats the issue that you could buy a 4090 for 1600$ recently which is much better than 5090 with its melting connectors and jeet tech and software - much lower quality

I am still using my GTX 1080 and I will continue using my GTX 1080.
Novidya has become too comfortable with its bubble market position, its uncontested ability to fraudulently squirrel or smuggle excess stock, and the fact that they don't have to fear competition from AMD (the CEOs are cousins and they both source their chips from TSMC, all three companies are Taiwanese). Nvidia has not delivered a GPU unambiguously worth buying in 10 years, because they have continuously delivered worse products at nearly all pricepoints in the consoomer market.
If I had any faith in Intel and AMD not being just controlled opposition, I would expect them to kill Nvidia soon.

I think that's also down to general stagnation. I upgraded my GPU recently and did so more from an investment perspective than genuinely needing to upgrade. Times when hardware becoming significantly cheaper (rather, the opposite) after a few years are gone it seems.

Debatable. Anyone looking to pony up the money for a 5090 is going to be looking for the best performance and experience available. I'm sure it will still perform decently in 7 years time but I very much so doubt it will provide the BEST experience, so it'll no longer be good enough for the people who are likely to actually buy one in the first place. Nobody is going to buy something that expensive and with such poor value and then ride it until it dies and performs like shit. If you're interested in value in the first place, you do not buy a 5090, you buy cheaper cards and more frequently.

>best experience
the best experience is keeping my money, waving it around black shortstacks at the gas station, and then impaling them on my bwc. until your plastic faggot brick can match that then my money is better spent on black and milds and cherry vodka.

I'd argue the opposite. buying a 5060, 6060, 7060, 8060, and then a 9060 instead of just a 5090 is silly. For example If you had an rtx 2080 for $700 at launch it wasn't outperformed by the 60 series until the 5060, for $350.

A 5090 will just melt and stop working eventually unless you don't use it to it's full potential, at which point a cheaper card would have worked anyways.

this really only applies at msrp prices and not during wildly inflated periods like right now or when crypto mining took off.

That's kind of the problem, Nvidia has engineered graphics cards like the 1080 that are still being used.

You don't need to buy 37 of the most worthless dogshit cards you can find on the market.

A 5090 sells for over $3000 at the very cheapest, but most of 'em seem to be around $4000 with the most expensive going for more than $5000. You can buy a $1000+ card right now which will still give you an excellent experience and then buy 2 more $1000+ cards in 2-3 years each. By the time you buy the 2nd card it will almost certainly outperform the 5090 while also supporting whatever new features come out by then, not to mention the 3rd card which will certainly shit all over a 5090 from all points of view.

You could buy a 5080 right now and save your remaining $2000+ for the next upgrade, which will definitely be faster than a 5090 in a few years. If you've got enough money to the point where $3000 or $4000 is chump change and doesn't really move the needle, then you buy a 5090 because it's the best and you can easily afford it, you don't need to care about value. But if you care about value at all, buying a 5090 is utterly nonsensical retardation given the price it's actually selling for right now.

Going for a 70 or a 80 series means you can essentially skip 1-2 generations.
Then again they castrated the 70 series to be bad as the 60.
>>
Reminder that all of you did this by buying nothing but nvidia for the past two decades
You could have prevented this. But you just had to keep buying GeForce

alternatively you can play spore on integrated graphics and spend the rest of your money getting girls. women love backseating spore after sex.

>>108719835
that's what happens when there's no legitimate competition. ati and then amd made garbage cards with garbage drivers. intel only just recently started. nvidia was the only option which is why I kept loading up on their stock back when I learned about using cuda cores to crack hashes and now I can shitpost in comfort for the rest of my life without having to wageslave.

why can I buy a 12gb rtx 3060 but not a 12gb rtx 5060?
